Hi
I am building my first boat , a Modelslipway 1/16 Tamar and at a point ready to spray paint the cabin. I intend to paint the inside grey and outside VW orange. What would be the best undercoat colour for the orange cabin. Have had a bad experience with the Halfords white undercoat, which was explained in a previous post so was thinking of grey undercoat. Does the difference in undercoat alter the final topcoat colour of VW orange . Thanks for any replies.
Not spraying until weather warms up.

Somewhere on this site is the correct colour chart for RNLI boats, nemesis

Inside should all be matt black.

You could also use white primer undercoat, would also give a slightly lighter/brighter shade of orange once fully painted, remember the darker the under surface, the darker the top coat. ;)

Alan,
Some of the Shannon builders are using Tamiya Fine Surface
Primer L Pink under the VW Orange. Have yet to try it myself.

Can you please tell me why, after spending hours building a scale lifeboat and knowing fine well that the RNLI use international / ral colours you go and use a spray can of a car colour???. The other paint is readily available.Nemesis, ex crew.

These are the colour shades recommended by someone who sprays real lifeboats. I and others have found they closely match the actual paints on modern lifeboats
Blue BS 381c Oxford Blue #105
Red BS 381c Currant Red #539
Orange BS 381c Orange #557
p.s. There are 7 different shades of " Volkswagen Orange" and none match #557

ajb63,
In our prototype model we used Halford's yellow primer with VW Brilliant Orange.

I don't think it is worth getting hung up about 'accurate' shades of RNLI orange. In reality the perceived hue will differ according to ambient lighting conditions so all of the shades mentioned above would be correct depending on the lighting conditions. Plus, the colour perception of individuals can greatly differ so what you see isn't necessarily what somebody else is seeing.
Same applies to the various shades of 'warship grey'. Its appearance differs according to the lighting conditions. There is no absolute right or wrong as far as most people's visual perception is concerned. Just not worth agonising about really.
If you display your model in a show the apparent colour will depend on the colour temperature of the lighting and the extent to which your individual eyes adjust.

Thanks for all replies regarding undercoat colour influencing top coat colour. I intend using spray cans of VW orange for the cabin as recommended by Modelslipway and other lifeboat builders on the forum. Don't want to venture into the field of spray guns.
I will go ahead myself and test with grey/ white undercoat with final cabin colour and hope the difference is negligible. Will post results later.
