Title: Scotchbrite or the cheaper copy

Has anyone used the original Scotchbrite brand material as opposed to the prolific copy green stuff available on Ebay?
Scotchbrite is very expensive I'm wondering if anyone has ever used it? And is it any better.

I recently came across a maroon colored Scotchbrite, in a Lowes big box store.  It is 400 grit where the more common green is 600.
Never saw an off-brand.  I don't buy enough of it to be a cost issue.

You have a valid point there, nevertheless it is very expensive. Rather annoyingly though the off brand stuff doesn't last 5 minutes.

I always use cheapo foam backed scouring pads from Tesco.


I find they are much less 'scratchy' than genuine Scotchbrite. There are a bit like half worn Scotchbrite, and while they don't last so long but they're so cheap, it matters not.

Local ironmongers with real world pricing are the best source. I am fortunate to have such across the road from me

I have never knowingly bought branded pads. I always get mine from local industrial counter (HIS, Inverness). The pads should all be different colours according to texture.  I've used pan sourers also, but actually find the result more scratchy / hit and miss.  I also really like the tamiya foam backed abrasive pads. Quite expensive but seem to last long enough, and can wash the dust out of them also.

I use the scotch bright pads a lot especially the grey fine one's.  I've found them to be excellent so I don't think that I would try a brand that copies what they do.  I can't imagine how much time it would take me to put my work right if the replacement pads weren't the same quality.  I think you get what you pay for.

And I always wash my Scotch Brite pads as I use them.  Extends the life a lot.
