Anyone got any old Model Boat Magazines in the Peterborough area I could borrow?
I would like to scan in some old articles and adverts for a trip down memory lane for us .... 😁
-
Be careful about copyright Martin.
Colin
-
After 30 years?!
-
A lot of those articles included plans which are still listed by Sarik so maybe choose carefully.

I think that if you just contact MB and say what you are doing they will be fine and as long as it is not for commercial gain, they may want acknowledgement.
Else I do believe that you may use a percentage of any publication for research and publication as long as you reference the item. ( Or maybe not)
-
The exemption used to be for criticism & review (at least that was the case when I was working for BBC TV News) but various producers would insist on pushing the rules beyond breaking point, which on more than one occasion resulted in a 5 figure invoice landing on us.
I suspect that Sarik would be agreeable to the use of old articles if they were encouraging people to buy the plans - but get it in writing first!
-
As I understand it copyright exists for 70-75 years. Whether anybody would enforce it is a different question.
I agree with theLongBuild that it is safest to ask the publishers for permission and offer to acknlwledge the source.
Making a build article available might even sell a few plans for them!
I suspect they would be unhappy about anything that is in their archive available to subsribers.
-
Martin never mentioned plans, just articles and old adverts, I could understand plans possibly being an issue but not the rest, we have articles on the convention site which have all been approved.
and as mentioned above , that could result in a few sales which can only be a good thing.
As for Copyright the amount of sites on the web and FB where Copys of plans ( Not Originals ) can be obtained is huge so does C.R mean anything today ?.
-
In practice probably not in this context but see:
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/dec/17/eric-clapton-wins-legal-case-against-woman-selling-bootleg-live-cd-for-845
which proves copyright is still very much alive in some areas.
A lot of the older MB articles have full plans reproduced in high quality as in those days, copying and enlarging them was actually quite difficult. Some of these plans have been reproduced for sale on an unauthorised basis and my current build actually makes use of one purchased from Canada where a husband and wife team appear to be running a bit of a sideline!
It's probably quite safe for Martin to do this but on his own head be it!

I'll comment on Colin Bishop's post No 8.
I too spotted the Canadian people who sell copies of my plans and construction notes via the Internet.
At first I was annoyed at this blatant breach of copyright. But, it was clear that the magazine publishers (who may believe they own the copyright) were doing absolutely nothing about it.
I then realized that these "evil Canuks" were actually doing a useful service in supplying material the the publisher is either unwilling or (probably more likely?) unable to do. It has always puzzled me that the Plans Service has never offered a copy of the construction article that accompanied the magazine plan feature.
Equally puzzling is the absence of the "free plans" in the electronic version of the magazine. I would not have thought that it would be too difficult to arrange for an electronic plan download to be arranged, probably limited to one copy per subscriber. The possible objection that this might lead to someone making numerous copies doesn't seem realistic especially as the publisher doesn't seem too bothered about what is happening above the 49th Parallel!

Interesting post, Glynn, so the magazines do not own the copyright on the plans they publish, they just pay for the right to publish them - which I assume means that you and other designers are able to sell the same plan to several different magazines, or do they purchase exclusive rights, either world-wide or within a specific territory? I also assume that the copyright remains with the designer, so any further publication without the agreement of the designer would be illegal.
-
The publishers certainly believe they have the right to republish the plans after they have bought them and indeed any other material published in the magazine. I used a lot of archival material in the series of Special Issues of Model Boats which I edited some years back. Going back even further, a whole series of Norman Ough drawings and plans were republished in the late 1960s/early 70s which had orriginally appeared in the 1950s. I'm told that some of the other MTM magazines are recycling archival material at the moment but don't have details of this. The Norman Ough plans are now held by the Great Britain Trust in the Brunel Institute having been donated as part of the David MacGregor collection. I assume he obtained them after Norman Ough's death. Quite what the copyright situation is I shudder to think! I published one plan on the basis that it had originally appeared in the magazine in the 1950s but of course the magazine had itself changed owners several times in the meantime. The assumption was that the previous rights were incorporated in the change of ownership.
Of course the reality is that only a few plans sell in significant numbers, most might achieve just one or two sales per year so going after plaigarists just isn't worth the bother plus many are actually in the public domain online anyway. I bought my plan from Canada as I was too lazy to have the original reproduction in the magazine reproduced at a larger scale. I have since discovered that the print is in fact distorted to some extent but as my model is near scale rather than yrue scale due to the need to incorporate the working paddle wheel mechanisms, it hasn't actually been a problem.
I don't know for certain but I think the plans of planes and boats etc. being sold by Sarik have been licensed to them by MyTimeMedia who still retain the publishing copyright. The 'X' plan range was licensed to John Cundell when he retired but subsequently brought back in house and now appear on the Sarik lists.
It's all a bit complicated!

Sad fact of life is that when accountants become involved, dire consequences of help are considered heresy. Also sad that on two occasions to my knowledge, FREE help from enthusiasts to two differing model publications has been turned down to their detriment. Were it not for some "Outlaws" many of the old school plans would be a distant memory and in saying Outlaws, I don't include those doing it to rip off the unsuspecting on THAT site and others. To answer both questions raised by Glynn, reason for this is - - - accountants. Every last drop from the lemon squeezer. On another thread the question of information on a couple of kit designs, now obsolete, was raised and hopefully some "Squirrels" will be able to help.
I wonder how many of todays "Modellers" even care about the preservation of the "Old" designs? I'll bet Vic would be glad to see that at least one designer seems to hold the same principles that he advocated. One of his designs however, although freely available, and originally a free givaway, later hit the plans service at 2/6d is now obtainable for £12.50, not bad for an A3 sheet. Wonder how much the present "Owners" would supply a 26" long version of the original 13" model?
Wish wee'd had the capabilities of todays compewters and programmes years ago. glad to be of assistance, in the past, to some on this forum via on occasions the late mate FLJ.
Regards Ian.

I was just asking as I was curious as to how copyright law works with plans. I spent many years working on clearing copyright for photographs used by a well-known national TV News corporation and later for slightly less serious use for the late Clive James. Clearances and fees in that world are very rarely straightforward!
-
With plans, if your caught it's the firing squad at dawn. I DON'T object to the original designer making a buck out of his efforts, as a designer in the past, gratification for ones efforts is a nice bonus but will never generate a retirement fund (Unless you're Bill Gates) but it wrangles my crumblies when the "Suits" become involved.
Difference in the photo world is how much can be extorted by publishing or not. This no doubt is the answer to Glynns other question why the "Owners" do nowt when plans "Escape" their clutches.
Regards Ian.

I would never support the removal of members messages unless they were defamatory or dangerous, but maybe moving the messages with the valuable info on IP and Copyright to their own section and developing the classic scans would be doubly beneficial?

The rule in the mags I work for is 60%+ editorial and the rest adverts, but it varies in different industries.
While I appreciate that many people think publishing a magazine on model boating is a licence to print money, in reality, it's a long way from that. Were the Canadians working in a bigger budget industry, selling plans in breach of copyright might attract lawyers, as it is, I doubt MTM can afford to chase them in international court cases. Even if they did, would the court award anything that would cover their legal costs? Is it right that someone can break the law and get away with it? That's for you to decide.
Coming back to the adverts, those are what keep any hobby magazine viable. Some of us even enjoy looking at them and buy stuff from advertisers. If you do, tell the advertiser, so they know there is value in their advertising.

Online, too many people like the attention of being a "victim" - often a call (not e-mail) to a small supplier will sort things, but where's the fun in that when you can have loads of people posting and sympathising with you? A good business will respond and sort problems, but they need to know.

January 2022 issue. 76 pages of which 14 are paid advertising or only 18%. Remembering that adverts pay for magazine production this is a very low number. I guess it is a comment on the state of the industry compared to the 60% plus paid adverts identified by Martin in old issues.

Referring to posts 34 and 35.
I cannot help but feel that when dealing with what might be best described as discretionary purchases of marginal items, then the greatest threat is when people take the option of just not buying it. This requires much less effort than complaining.
Of course it could leave the the producer ignorant of the failings of their product. In deed, if they only receive praise from those satisfied with it, then they have an (admittedly poor) excuse for failure. Of this assumes they do not suffer from "Morton's Demon".
Before anyone asks, I do try to give thanks for good service and leave a tip in restaurants/hotels (but only after checking the staff do get the cash!). I've even been known to write to people who have produced something above average in magazines.

Hii GG re your post No 20. Quite a while back 20+ years? I bought the plans of Caribee and I asked for the building instructions and these were copied off for a very small additional fee. Still have them.
Phil, coming from the model railway world where the adverts are still plentiful and the paper the mag is printed on is good and the pictures top quality. You can feel spoilt. I have MRW and my son takes the digital version.
Model Boats magazine for me is full of big pictures and rather flimsy paper, perhaps it all looks better in the digital edition, Trouble is there is so much free stuff on the Internet that paying for the digital version is let us say 'Noticeable'.
I have all but 20 or so issues of Model Maker from 1952 or was it Dec. 51? All the Model Boats magazines, they are filed away by year in what I now find are bio-degradable bags! LIfe always manages to bite you one way or the other.

I agree about the pictures.
I am a digital only subscriber but don't understand the "noticeable" bit.
The biggest criticism I have is that the build articles are not designed to be read without the plan - which I don't get. The article re "Claire" in the January 2022 doesn't even give basic dimensions. Unfortunately this is normal. They take digital subscrtiber money without doing what is neessary to ensure best value.
They apparantly also have a very dated idea that not giving any sort of plan to digital subscribers protects copyright. This is very dated as I could easily scan the free printed plan from a print magazine if I wished to do so.
-

Yes, that is a strange marketing decision... and why I didn't opt for it in the end. {:-{

Given that very few of us have a printer that does bigger than A4, any digital plan would need breaking down into A4 size tiles. Thats a lot of effort that would need paying for for an item that in probability, only a tiny fraction would use, but would certainly increase the cost of producing the digital issue. Perhaps a discount for anybody with a digital subscription buying a paper plan associated with one of their issues?

I get both paper and Digital but I think the discount for a plan if you have a digital subscription only would be a good move.

Quite apart from the extra admin involved, MyTimeMeda publish the magazine but Sarik sell the plans. Plus it seems a bit hit and miss which free plans make it into the plans service anyway - many don't. MTM no longer seem to run a retail operation as such. Most of their 'staff' seem to be contract freelances now. I think the only way you could include a free plan with the digital sub is to allow the subscriber to access a PDF file which can be printed out at home or taken to a copy shop. I'm told that one reason the digital sub is cheaper than the print edition is because it doesn't include the free plans.
With feature plans it has always been the case that you need to buy the plan separately although partial reproductions have been included in the article to give an idea of what they are like.
I too have never understood in days gone by why purchasing the plan didn't include the accompanying construction article. It just seems to have been an accident of history.
Colin
-

Colin
It could be that the reason the feature article hasn't been included with plans was that in the 1950's and 60's copying a few pages of type was not as easy. No scanners, no laser/inkjet/dotmatrix printers and no photocopiers. I am not sure what hard copy they had back then but once set up the system never changed. For the few plans sold it was probably not worth doing anything about it.
I understand the argument about plans & copyright (even though it make little sense to me) but that doesn't excuse failing to make sure the articles are sensible for digital subscribers. If they want digital subscriptions then they need to make a little effort to make the magazine better for us.
I also suspect that the profit margin on digital subscriptions is higher than print issues with all the associated distribution costs.
-
Hi to respond to my word 'noticeable' I thought the digital issue was too dear. A few years ago there was an offer of £5 for a year on digital and I bought that as I would be on a long holiday and it gave me access that I used to have to previous issues. When there was a distribution or some such problem a few years ago and the free plan did not get issued with the magazine. There was an offer of a free download of the plan which would have meant paying for the printing but at least you got to see the plan.
If I want to buy the same plan later it is a minimum of £12.50. But it is printed on better quality paper at least. It maybe time to re-think exactly what you are buying with a magazine, outside my ability anyway.
I do like to pick up a magazine to read but it is only habit and the convenience of a small tablet is not quite the same and a 15 inch laptop too much.
The very large numbers of adverts contained in the model railway magazines are surely at least a month or more out of date when looking at a printed magazine so going on-line gives an up to date look at what is being advertised. I can see the argument that you might not have thought of that company for an item.
I tried to follow a conversion of some model railway rolling stock in one magazine / recommendation. Perhaps it was an old article? I tried to buy the suggested shopping list but failed completely, I did get a response from the magazine but in the end it was of no use. I never received a single response from a supplier, I was a beginner in this particular field and needed advice. I do hope there is more help on the model boating side as otherwise, as they say 'We are doomed'.
Best regards
Roy

Hi Tug I think a previous Model Boats editor told me that the take up on plans that had to be payed for was around 40, bearing in mind the distribution figures were at 15,000+ this is not very many. Some of the Model Boat early free plans have spawned many models Dave Metcalf ones especially and of course G.G.
A few years ago I was very surprised when using the Model Boat plans service I received my plans printed by Traplet now Sarik. So M.B. had out-sourced their plans printing service. Int Marine Modelling was also available then so an anouncement would have curtailed speculation. In general the trade is in printed paper you can have whatever subjects you want on this paper as long as you are willing to pay for it.
A point one of our frequent forum posters has made is that if you want our magazine to survive then take out a subscription as the High Street retailers will take out most of the profit for themselves. Just browsing and paying for the odd edition that takes your fancy will soon put the magazine into past memory. If they get more of the purchase price then it might get better quality paper etc.

I am also a member of the West London Meccano Society but perhaps more of a fellow traveller. They have attended in force at our annual exhibitions in St. Albans for 20 years and we have 3 big classrooms full of Meccano models. I hope we might be able to put the exhibition on again in 2022.

To do something like that either takes a team or a very dedicated person.
Assuming we had copyright holders permission I would be willing to be a team member for model boating mags although someone would need to lend me the mags to scan.

Assuming we had copyright holders permission I would be willing to be a team member for model boating mags although someone would need to lend me the mags to scan.
A very dedicated team as would be nearly 70,000 pages. When I had access to a good and quick scanning machine I did think about it, but decided that really the interest would probably not be worth the effort, hence I just ended up scanning the front covers of all the MB mags, and even that took some doing. I Tthink full permissions might be difficult as they are available on line from 2007.
-
A couple of years ago I came across some kits for sale out of the Covid country which were made up from free plans from Model Boats magazine when the free plan was in 2 colours. They were not expensive until you try and bring them into the U.K.

Interesting to see the change in prices.
The Sanwa 3-channel set is over £750 in current money, whilst entrance to the ME exhibition was under four quid.

Go back to post#24 Tug, falls on stony ground, as an uncontrolled source, the "Accountants" think you're going to fill your retirement funds.

The Sanwa 3-channel set is over £750 in current money, whilst entrance to the ME exhibition was under four quid.
The magazine was 30p and my mortgage was for £7000 on a 3 bed semi I paid about £10K for a year or so earlier. The admission price was actually 45p for an adult; 25p for a child at school. Teachers in charge of a party free!
That's inflation for you!
-
What that demonstrates is that in real terms property, exhibition entry and magazines are now far more expensive than they used to be, whereas electronics are vastly cheaper.
-
Aye for now but if the print side stops it wont.
-
Aah memories - the screaming OS40 rear induction that wouldn't tick over below around 5000rpm, revved like the clappers = mucho fasto boat -
then PING bang goes the con rod ! Happy days.
-
Aye for now but if the print side stops it wont.
If the print side stops then so will the digital. Both are needed to keep the magazine afloat!

Adverts are what keep magazines viable at a price the buyers are willing to pay. It's also how manufacturers, even in these days of the web, keep people aware of their existence. I'm not sure how either is a bad thing, but reading comments here, I see that many think it is.

A couple of things I'd like to read up on;
battery above prop shaft,
battery recommended,
coupling type,
controller type,
radio,

I hate to disappoint you, R.A. Sweet did not specify them; there was probably only one option available then, maybe no option at all !
Below is the rest of his article, these 3 photos show all the information provided for the build.

One of the critical issues in photocopying is to either use a flat bed scanner or you can almost guarantee to get a "keystone" effect where the picture forms a perspective view and this is very hard to correct as it is not just the top vs the bottom lengths but also the left and right heights.
It requires many accurate measurements to skew the picture back to the right aspect ratio and then accurate scaling to get it back to a useful proportion. Attached is the best I can do without accurate measurements to correct it properly actual of scale waterline length, centreline length beam and any other would allow a more proportioned rendition.
-
Even then I chopped off the keel, just required more attention. >>:-(
A little research found https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showatt.php?attachmentid=3996… a good scan of the 1965 article.
As long as it did not infringe a copyright, I would be pleased to trace the drawings into a usable set of build drawings, if anyone is interested.
-
I deliberately skewed the images to avoid copyright issues.
I have the original pages, but not the full magazine.
If someone seriously wants to build Plumgarth from this plan, I am happy to post the scale plan etc to them free of charge (even to Australia) and then it has not been "sold", or copied.
That build would be an interesting Topic here on Mayhem.
-
Don't know if you're using Photoshop Martin but on plans the height to width ratio causes "squashing" at times. Battery used is "Ever Ready" 'Flat battery', NO it wasn't, it was three 1.5v dry cells wrapped in a flat cardboard pack. Power source of choice for TG18 or Mighty Midget motors.
PDFs for this and other MM free plans are available.
Regards Ian
PS. Scans good, photos c-ap.
And an aside, if you cut the ends of this plan to join up the back end, it DOESN'T work, pity the typesetters didn't try it. DAMHIK

Hi,wow, really old stuff. In the 70's I had a small 1:1 fishing boat, just 2.50m, wich later was replaced by a 3.80m one with larger outboarder. No need of model building at that time (my father usually said "either model or real, you have the choice....").
Now I'm modeling lifeboats, german DGzRS ones so far, but I'll get a plan and a hull for a Tyne class lifeboat next week. I found out that there is a Model Boats article about a 1:20 (or 1:18) built in the october 1986 issue. I would be very happy if someone here has that and can get me a copy of that pages (even photos would be ok), maybe via PN.
But probably 1986 is far too new for you guys here {-)
Have fun,Joerg

I have long wanted to scan the 'Traditional Steam' articles by Basil Harley.
I have about the first ten or so but there is just so much good info in those articles, I would want them on-line so they can be shared but haven't gotten around to it yet.
-
I now use Microsoft Lens, does all the scanning hard work for you .... on your phone!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.officelens&hl=en_GB&gl=US
-
Hi,
The only reason I haven't scanned them and posted them somewhere is that somebody is going to have something to say about it.
-
How old are the articles?
( As long as there are no commercial interest and about 20+ years old, you should be fine.)
(( If you're still nervous, I'll post for you .... ))

Thank you so much for these pages.
I just wish the modern magazine was half as good. These articles are often technical and you learn a lot. Articles now are often just pictures with scant text connecting them. It is only when you go back to these that you realize what you have lost.
Is there any chance of finding the extra pages of the article "Model Powerboat Hull Design". Page 530 is included in post 129 above (submitted by Tony) from October 1982 Issue 380. I would be very interested in page 531! + the rest of the article if possible.

I don't think there is near as many as that. it was a relatively short lived magazine. Definitely didn't last 70 years. (I haven't been building model boats for 70 years <*< <*< ) The magazine referred to is not Model boats but Radio Control Boat Modeller. I do however have most of the Model Boats magazine from 1975, takes up a few shelves.

Hi Jim
Yes sorry I was referring to Model Maker & Model Boats, Think RCBM was basically absorbed into Model Boats.

Just measured my complete collection of 1950 to 1965 of the proper Muddle Maker and 20 out of 24 issues of its predecessor The Model Mechanic, 135 square by 10 thick, mm that is.

I don't remember Norstar making a Crash Tender - but I do remember the SHG Shadow. I had one with either a Webra or a Veco 19 - about 40 years ago. Great fun, but would have to be electrified today.
-
I have the PBM paddle steamer sitting on a shelf, badly needing some restoration work. It was a bit tender as it came so I ended up adding an extra 1/2 inch balsa bottom with an external ballast keel moulded from lead shot and polyester resin. It also needed an enlarged rudder to improve the steering but with these mods it handled well. The geared drive was very noisy so I replaced that with a friction drive with silicon tube on the motor shaft running on an aluminium disc, much quieter with no gear noise. Probably still got the original Bob's Board wired in.(Also have their oil rig supply boat.)

Remember having one of these 'Glasgow' paddle tugs, originally powered by Wilesco steam plant, later changed to electric drive. Mine had the problem of water getting on the deck and leaking in through the paddle shaft bearings as described in the article.
Nevertheless this was a lovely model which I now regret selling.

Have you got the Model Maker with the Ron Warring review of the Bassett-lowke 1466 Marine electric motor featured?
I have 2 and one does not work as well as the other and am thinking of complaining.
By the way this motor is also made in Australia for O gauge locomotives but at around £200 a time.

Hi Circlip I would like to print it out from a scan if possible. I really do have 2 Marines with one better than the other! I think it maybe brush pressure on the tardy one.

Just as a smartarse comment, I have all the MM test reports from the 1951 to 1964 issues readily to hand in a separate file. O0
Regards Ian.
Those sound very interesting! Do you have a full set of test reports for the Taycols?
i am going to do an update of the site, since I now have built a successful circuit for enabling reverse without the voltage loss associated with using a rectifier. I suspect there won't be many people interested, but I might as well publish it - and adding a set of test reports would also be useful...

See PM, quicker you comply quicker return.
Regards Ian.
Could you supply issue or post article here.... just out of curiosity Circlip please? :-))

I also would be interested, since I too have a couple of B-L Marines.
As well as those, I have something I believe to be a bit of a rarity - a Taycol Marine. These are the precursors of the Supermarine, and have a huge drum-type commutator instead of the later disk one. I do not think there are many around...

Hi Dodgy G, please go ahead with the motor reviews on your web site if possible I often check in and look forward to your new reverse circuit as I wouls like to find a job for my Taycol Standard, a nice powerful motor.

Sorry to have done so little updating over the past few years - there I'd just not enough time in the day for everything. I have three EeZebilts at various stages to finish and publish, as well as a day job to hold down which gets more tiring as one gets older.. . But I hope to put it out next week. How are you with Veroboard?

Hi DG still got a lot left over from my experimental days and so many components I could almost open a shop. If you are ever short of anything send me a P.M. as I have a lot of the old chips doing nothing including a few ZN409s and 74*** series chips. I even have a bag of unused OC140's.
Look forward to your update.

74*** series chips?
We used to DREAM of 74*** series chips......At the moment one of my projects it to recreate an old Remcom Versatile 12 reed receiver. That means cutting 1/64" spring steel to make a reed bank, and, probably, winding my own IF cans. The transistors would be from the old Newmarket days. I don't suppose you have any NKT676, 212s or 218s, do you? If you have, they should be in a museum...

Ok guys, give me a couple of days, all scans I did were Jpegs ready to use the round tuit and convert/compress to PDFs. Roycv's took a couple of minutes but early tomorrow, have to wave goodbye to the two type 23s in dock whilst on the Torpoint ferry and drive the 350 bl***y miles home. Wotch yer in boxes Dodgy and Martin for complete sets.

Hi DG I am returning to the UK in 3 weeks time I will have a look then. Doing a bit of medical recovery in Australia.I used to have an ED 6 ch. reed RC set, passed it on to an active collector maybe 10 years ago now

Hi DG, sorry I forgot to look until now. Those transistors are not in my lot. The ones I have are computer oriented. I have the common 74...s which are not doing anything but they are mainly gates and flip flops.
Hope your old RC refurbish is going well.

Refurb on a bit of a hold, I'm afraid
I got talking to the 6-year old son of a local vintage free-flighter, and asked him what sort of model boat he might like to build - "A paddle-steamer" was the answer.
He was thinking about a stern-wheeler, but I suspect that might be uncontrollable at EeZeBilt sizes. So I'm doing a 30" Waverly. If the prototype works I can do him a kit for Xmas....

Alas, I avoid much social media such as Facebook.... but I like the Tesla boat. The plan suggests that the hull is woden, while I always thought that it was metal - probably beaten copper.
I wonder if anyone has built a working replica apart from museums? The operational frequencies would probably have to be different...
