Sad to see you go what a long shift you endured :((
-
That reign was indeed a long time.
Condolences to her family.
-
Yes indeed Feb6th 1952
I was born 1958 so never known a better Monarch. I think she's probably the only one to have ever taken the job seriously. All servicemen took an oath of allegiance and in the modern world I believe they meant it in regards to her.
The question now is will King Charles III take the throne or defer to William
-
Yes, the country will be in shock although it was not unexpected.
Elizabeth did her duty as she promised upon accession and, whatever your views, deserves all credit for that.
We live in a new era now and not necessarily for the better.
Today I was in Portsmouth on the harbour tour viewing the carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth which bears her name when the news came through of her decline.
I remember getting a Coronation Mug in 1953 when I was five years old.
Colin
-
Being not a UK citizen I had no actual need to learn the ins and outs of the monarchy processes so my naive expectation is that Charles will of course assume the throne.
I don't much follow national or international news any more, haven't got the health to do so, but I did look up stuff today.
Saw article on BBC which appears to assume, even give evidence, Charles already has accepted the position.

Charles is the new King
-
Nice post Colin.
I feel Charles or William have genuine care in their souls and the ability to deal with the media. Elizabeth had to adapt to the growth of "media" throughout and didn't always get it right and the sharks loved to feed. Marvellous job overall ! RESPECT
-
I also swore allegiance to her Majesty at the beginning of my career and had the honour to help with her security when she visited Bolton back in the 80,s.Tonight I have shed tears….
A wonderful woman who will be greatly missed around the world…

Astonishing that there are many images of a rainbow adjacent to the half mast flag at Buck Palace and Windsor Castle.

Phillip came to me today,
and said it was time to go.
I looked at him and smiled,
as i whispered that "I know"
I then turned and looked behind me,
and seen I was asleep.
All my Family were around me,
and I could hear them weep.
I gently touched each shoulder,
with Phillip by my side.
Then I turned away and walked,
with My Angel guide.
Phillip held my hand,
as he lead the way,
to a world where King's and Queens,
are Monarch's every day.
I was given a crown to wear
or a Halo known by some.
The difference is up here,
they are worn by everyone.
I felt a sense of peace,
my reign had seen its end.
70 years I had served my Country,
as the peoples friend.
Thank you for the years,

Well said Footski.
Elizabeth did her duty throughout her reign as she promised. She will be very much missed.
Colin
-
Many weeks of celebrating her service will ensue, I look forwards to being refreshed.

A very dignified lady, despite the landmines. The end of an era - Sadley
.
Ian.

RIP Ma'am, God save the King.
-
The end of an era. A very sad day indeed.
A German aquaintance send me a nice email saying he was quite often envious of us because we had tour Queen. She seems to have touched a lot of people worldwide.
-
God save King Charles the Third. A name synonymous with royal difficulty at a time when the monarchy was evolving from an autocratic monarchy as experienced with royalty through the Tudor dynasty, and later into the constitutional monarchy. But I hope that King Charles will embrace the way Queen Elizabeth reigned.
-
Well said and I'm confident that William will have been moulded by his dad and grandmother :-))
-
It's only 20th century technology that has enabled us to see the life of a person from their birth to their death captured forever. The pictures and film shots of her life evoke so much emotion
-
Other leaders have come and gone, but Queen Elizabeth has left her indelible and positive mark on the world. She has touched all of our lives, even if we have never thought about it.
-
I'm a little less than 10 years younger then our late Queen, and grew up reading of the young princesses, and the rest of the Royal Family In those days, Australia's National Anthem was God Save the King, which we sang at school on certain occasions. When King George VI died in 1952, and the young Queens ascended to the throne, we sang God Save the Queen. Australia now has its own national anthem, Advance Australia Fair. I well remember watching the coronation fireworks display from the shores of Sydney Harbour, right next to the famous bridge.
At the end if 1953 I moved to Lismore, on the far north coast of NSW, and in February 1954 the Queen visited Lismore as part of her first Australian tour. We stood in pouring rain to see her, and I have been a staunch royalist ever since. The next time I saw her in person was at the Trooping the Colour in 1997, when we stood near the Canada Gates to watch the members of the Royal Family leave, and later return, to Buckingham Palace. It was also the 75th anniversary of the RAF, and a flypast of the Red Arrows trailing red, white, and blue, smoke, went right over our heads. I have some great photos of the Queen pointing at the aircraft as they flew past.
It wasn't unexpected, but extremely sad nevertheless, to hear this morning of the Queen's passing, Truly, an end to an era,
Peter.
-
My first memory of her reign is watching the Coronation on our black and white T.V. and then dashing in the car to see the coach go along the Mall. We had mugs handed out at school to commemorate the occasion.
-
Indelible memories or HRH and Phil standing in the back of an open Landrover doing a tour round Bradford Park Avenue Cricket Ground to the screams of hundreds of schoolkids just after the coronation.
Regards Ian.
-
I saw Queen Elizabeth II for real at the RAF Review at Odiham in 1953 when I was 11, and was astonished at how young she was. I asked my Mum how anyone that young could possibly be a Queen, and yet she has been all this time. An amazing woman.
And I'm pleased to have shaken hands with the King twice, not something I ever expected!

From Titter - Michaela Strachan @michaelastracha
Tonight feels like we’ve all come to the end of that book that was always on our bedside table. We all read the chapters, some were good, some sad, some full of drama, some surprising. We all loved that book and although we’re sad the book has ended, it was the end we hoped for.
-
Yesterday I was visiting Portsmouth Dockyard with friends and we took the harbour tour as usual. In the morning HMS Queen Elizabeth was flying the white ensign from her stern but I have checked the photos I took later from the dockyard and by 15:45 it had been hauled down so maybe the ship which was named after her had an inside channel.

Just out of interest, this is the private charter aircraft that brought King Charles back from Aberdeen - Easyjet it aint!

I wonder why he didn't fly with the King's Flight, now 32 Sdn. RAF.

Boat related: my father remembers seeing HMS Britannia as a wee lad, anchored out in Thunder Bay after coming all the way up the brand-new St Lawrence Seaway in 1959. Her Majesty and Eisenhower met in Massena for the opening ceremonies.

The Queen in pictures from 2 o'clock on BBC today

24 hour coverage on most ABC channels. One would think nothing else had happened in the world. All the commercial news is the same except for sport. >>:-(

Being of Convict stock [but still a semi-Monachanst], I have been here for 100 years so have no words to offer that have not been expressed by others
The exceptions I did not see coming [from left of centre] were the reported words of "sadness, and condolences to Family" from both President Xi Jinping, and President Vladimir Putin
Reflecting on this, I don't know that either of these two World Leaders needed Politically, to offer their words

I think this reflects the fact that in the UK the Head of State is separated from the Executive and is considered to be above politics. It's a diplomatic nicety.

Interesting comments in The Independent about what the Ukrainians have appear to have been writing on their artillery shells. Perhaps they consider that Mr Putin is being cynical? >>:-(

Can we leave Ukraine out of this Topic

An interesting interview by an Australian Journalist covering the growing line of the many thousands of peoples waiting in line to pass by the Coffin of HM Elizabeth II
A quietly, well spoken individual who when asked, identified himself as just a member of the Public, but a retired Colonel [Militaray] and also but some years earlier appointed by Her Majesty Elizabeth II, as Black Rod
Former Black Rod David Leakey— who spoke with the ABC's Barbara Miller a short time ago — says he's [King Charles III] a human being, like the rest of us"

Do you mean to say you’ve never been grumpy about something that’s happened in your life? The guy's a human being and he’s had a busy few days ," Mr Leakey says.
"He’s not like a Hollywood actor, putting on some professional, consummate performance the whole time. He’s a human being, like the rest of us.”
We have an equivalent role [Black Rod] within our Australian Parliamentary system, although naturally with far less history or pomp & ceremony

Many, many questions will evolve in the coming months & years :o
Our Australian Naval vessels have the call ..... HMAS ....being ......Her Majestys Australian Ship....
Following on, will these vessels now be called HKAS? .....His Kings Australian Ship?
Many, many questions (https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/Smileys/Tug/tongue.gif)
Derek
-
No Derek, it will still be HMAS, His Majesty’s Australian Ship. After all it was never Her Queen’s Australian Ship %%
Peter.

Not really, "Majesty" is not Gender specific, so will stay the same HMAS, as will HMS and the New Zealand Navy HMNZS and the Canadian HMCS
His Majesty
Her Majesty
Your Majesty
In reality I doubt very little will really change apart from the Head profile on coins in due time and the picture on the notes, none of which will be instant.

Thanks Gents.......it just didn't sit well....how silly of me, I should have known better......but no excuse :embarrassed: ....

Wow,
Yesterday was incredible. Very sad, magnificent, wonderful and again very sad.
I reckon that around the world, more tears have been spilled for our Queen than for any other person in history…
-
One thing did spring to mind in watching the pageantry, (and nobody does it better) was the number of EIIR insignias that will have to be changed in the military and state dress to CIIIR
Regards Ian.
-
Wow,
Yesterday was incredible.
I couldn’t agree more Barry, we watched it for hours and loved every minute. As Circlip said, nobody, but nobody, does pomp and pageantry better than the Brits. I remember watching the Coronation at the movie theatre, (there was no such thing as TV in Australia in those days) and was instantly hooked on the spectacle of such occasions. 70 years on and I am still hooked.
It was an extremely sad occasion, but a fitting tribute to a wonderful woman who so richly deserved all the accolades.
Peter.
-
Watched it all quite extensively yesterday.... ( stuck at home .... we gots the covid! ) >:-o
The young pallbearer team did a fantastic job, considering the pressure they were under.... well done Lads!
-
I noticed that the pall bearers were walking out of step on the right and left hand side, presumably so as the coffin didn't sway from side to side as they carried it.
Well done who thought of that.
-
That's the correct procedure - I've been a poll bearer a number of times now, and being ex-military, I've always ensured to coach each of the other bearers at family funerals. It's the safest way to carry a coffin. Where possible, the bearers reach under the coffin and grip the outer shoulder of the adjacent bearer - this procedure helps to even out the load and keep it steady.
Ray.
-
RIP your Majesty you were an inspiration to us all. Her devotion to duty from a very early age was amazing
John
-
Don't know whether it was an optical conclusion but it looked like the Navy were the only service to get the coffin square on the carriage. It didn't look square on any of the other transport systems OR the Dias's.
Regards Ian.
-
There's always one!
As a retired veteran (my Regiment didn't carry out ceremonial duties) I am aware that our wonderful late Queen's coffin is normally made from solid oak, lead lined with solid brass fitting's, as such I believe but do not quote me on the exact (rivet counting) weight works out at approximately 80/85 LBS per coffin bearing person. Try holding that at arms length for the amount of time those young Guardsmen did! It matters not if the coffin was directly in line with the carriage or the stand it sat on at Westminster Abbey the whole state funeral was carried out superbly with great dignity by all those involved. I raise my beret to them all well done, there is no other country in the world who can do pomp like our magnificent armed forces! R.I.P. Elizabeth the Great.
Rant over,
Pete,
-

Regards Ian.
Most coffins that I have seen are not rectuangular, but slightly tapered at both ends. This may give the impression that the coffin is not sitting square on the carriage or the dias.
-
Sorry, I wasn't criticising the coffin bearers. The fact that it's made from best English oak or the weight has nowt to do with alignment. Yes, the sides are tapered but the ENDS are parallel. Hades' dentures, don't understand some peoples sensitivities to a mere observation.
Regards Ian.
-
Out of respect I don't think the original topic is a place for any conflicting views to be brought up
-
Pete, it may well be that it was an observation that needn’t have been made, under the circumstances. I doubt that many people would have noticed any misalignment, I certainly didn’t. Overall, it was a magnificent spectacle, and a fitting tribute to a remarkable lady, one who will be greatly missed by millions.
Peter.
-
It was obvious from the coverage that long zoom and wide angle lenses were being used to cover proceedings and this introduced optical distortions into the cropped images. In one of them Big Ben was leaning at 30 degrees and in another the whole procession was ‘telescoped’ so everyone looked on top of each other. Quite normal in the circumstances. Plus of course the coffin was clipped onto the gun carriage to stop it falling off.

So clearing things from shelf A to b shelf to make it look tidier, well to me, anyway I came across this, I knew I had it somewhere and was passed to me by my Grandfather.
Assume King Charles III will be doing a similar review?

Whilst I’d love to see a fleet review as I don’t think there has been one for a long time but it’ll look rather small compared to his mother’s coronation review. These from what I’ve seen of the Spithead Reviews of old were spectacular rows of every type of warship we had- if you look for the DVD of Spithead Reviews from 1900 to 1953 it took forever to sail by every ship.
I hope we get to see some ships lined up but with modern commitments and a smaller navy I’m very dubious if there will be. But fingers crossed I’m wrong :-))
