Hi, All
Having had no success with getting the GA. plan printed to a larger size so that i can build a model of this vessel i set about some research and now made a set of plans of my own, i did this by simply expanding the the PDF on my lap top then drawing out the lines on paper, i expanded the image to 259% it wasnt exactly to what i wanted but its a good size to work with, the beam comes out 252mm and LOA 627mm. this i around 1/35 scale.
Trucker
-
That's an interesting solution to the dilemma and looking forward to seeing how things progress.
Ray.
-
Pity you could not make a pantograph in thick card and expand it to the desired size that way, print off the original pdf, calculate the length it needs to be and trace the A4 to the new size.
-
Put together sample number 2 a stiff paper template this evening, im liking the way this has gone, so i will transfer this to my build material soon..
Trucker
-
Not knowing the vessel and being intrigued by cabin shape I played in Google and found this page from the company who use Severn Supporter,
https://www.landfall.nl/severn-supporter (https://www.landfall.nl/severn-supporter)
It has photo of vessel as page header & I just discovered that right clicking on 'open image in new tab' gives this quite nice 2366 x 1690 oblique image from starboard side and just a hair aft, of vessel underway.
https://www.landfall.nl/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/FF103672-compressed.jpg (https://www.landfall.nl/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/FF103672-compressed.jpg)
Shows a couple guys in wheelhouse & has a nice angle on chain and tire/tyre fender all down the side.
Oh, they also have a quite nice PDF which includes 4 view drawing of exterior and an internal deckplan. Also diagram showing lifting capacity of crane at different extensions.
Will bet that is the PDF which Trucker is using for this build.

hi scott, thats the very web page that i have got all the info for this build, although i have been inspired by a build of a work boat named viking energy, on page two of work boats, %)
trucker
-
on page two of work boats,
In saying page two of work boats I expect that means the tugs and workboats section of the same Landfall NL website, but since I know of the following US magazine website titled WorkBoat, that was what first came to my mind.
My bookmark is set to their shipbuilding section,
https://www.workboat.com/shipbuilding

from my paper plan and a mock build out of paper to wood, %% little filler required, its quite pleasing so far...
Trucker
-
I like the way this is going Trucker. Following along eagerly. :-)
Ray.
-
Hi, Ray
This is only experimental at the moment just to test the water so to speak, im still finishing the Tyne class life boat, but, hey, its nice to play around.. thanks for looking in though..
Trucker
-
added a few more items to the housing, air vent shaft for the engine room port side, a few port holes, and the base for the bridge, every thing only dry fitted for now, incase things need tweeking :}
Trucker
-
Hi Trucker, it's good to see you're using the combination of wood and plastic - should help to keep the weight of the topsides down.
Ray.
-
Hi, just cant put this down, heres a little more of the build so far, the picture shows a wooden structure inside the bridge, i put a forme inside so it would hold the wall to the angle i was looking for and then allow them to dry after gluing.
Trucker
-
Hi, just cant put this down,
That can be a thing when you're doing a build and get in the groove, as the saying says. :}
-
Hi all,
Heres a couple of pictures of a little progress %% , three days of on and off cutting sanding has opened the windows for the bridge..
Trucker
-
another pic of a little work, this is the over sized spot light that sits on top of the bridge, its scratch made from the scrap box, for the silver reflector look around the LED bulb ive used a sweet wrapper, its quite effective %% . it will also rotate but the light angle will be fixed, and it will light up too,
Trucker
-
One of those mini-projects which add life and character to a model.
-
hi all,
ive added some control panals and cupboards into the bridge, a couple of chairs are needed and some thought required for the painting and glazing before closing this part down.
Trucker
-
and some thought required for the painting and glazing before closing this part down.
That is shaping up nicely.
Sorry, but you're on your own for all that thinking! :}
-
as i flick about from one part to another on this build i came up with the idea of a couple lights for the wheel house, these are experimentle at the moment but it shows my ideas, all the parts for the lighting are recycled from a kiddies sit on car, im hoping to use many more bits from the car for this build..
Trucker
-
Ahh, various items being recycled for modeling purposes, that is a thing, you know. :-))
-
And don't forget the 'Chips' from failed LED G10 lamps.
Regards Ian.
-
painfully slow on this build but things are being built, ive had a good few hours this weekend, so heres a few pics of a dry fit and the progress ok2
-
Hi Every one,
The basic hull build is almost complete, i have fitted the frames and given the inside a good few coats of varnish, im looking at several methods to complete the corners, then its time to consider the running gear, rudders and the fiber glass out side covering.
Trucker
-
Even though progress is slow, it does all add up! :-))
-
some progress on the work boat, ive finished the rounded corners at stern, sorted a couple of alignment issues with the bow, made the basic stern and bow pushers these are made from balsa so will need a good dose of sealing and finally another dry fit and a stand back and a smile.
Trucker
-
Hi All. Happy new year
After closing the bow and ensuring its neat and tidy i set about the task of getting the bow roller in, the roller is plastic conduit , i took it slow and slowly cut away, it appears to sit well in its place inline with my plans, next stage is to work out how to have it a free rotating roller then build up behind it and making it water tight,
Trucker
-
Coming on nicely! :-))
-
Thanks for your reply, here are 3 pics of some more work on the bow roller, roller and the part behind the roller are plastic conduit, im planning on having a free rolling part, the next stage tonight is to glue it place and ensure all gaps are filled,
Trucker
-
Hi all, after reading a fare bit on the net and here i have given the ply wood hull of my work boat a good coating of resin and hardener, the first was diluted and allowed to soak in second and third was not diluted, i allowed it to puddle which should tell me the wood is unable to take any more, rightly or wrongly.. its now gone off and set well, so my next step is to lay some fiber glass cloth over the hull,
My question is then should i rough up the surface so the new resin and cloth will have some thing to grab.
Trucker
-
You should definitely sand it smooth and wipe it down with alcohol for the best possible adhesion.
-
Hi, All
I have made the four deck bollards, ive tried to give them a bit of strength so put some 5/8th dowl inside because i could be called for a bit recovery LOL. and turned my hand to the fiber glassing of the hull, it appears to of cured well but i see two small bubbles, i only intend to do one covering plus paint so hope that will make a water tight boat.
Trucker
-
Hi there Trucker, I'm playing catch-up on your build again and she's looking good.
Nice work with the free roller :-))
Ray.
-
Thank you Ray, this is really putting my small amount of knowledge and skills to the limits, but we learn as we go. im looking forward to getting the paint out again, roll on the better weather,,
Trucker
-
can some one give me advice on my recent fiberglass, my glass cloth has cured pretty well all over but there are three dry blister spots, well thats my name for them, how do i go about fixing them, wondering if its a case of cutting the blister out then rubbing down a slightly bigger area the wet up and patch over..
Trucker
-
The best way is to remove the blisters then sand down and reglass, if they are not too big then they can be filled usin a suitable filler. You need to be careful when glassing that all air bubbles have been removed before the resin hardens. An old credit card can come in use to press the glass down on the surface and make sure the resin is properly spread out. Some use small disposable felt rollers to spread out the resin and press the glass down although this does tend to waste some resin which soaks into the roller. Not too big a problem if you do get bubbles , even commercial glass hulls can have bubbles under the gel coat.

Hi, all
had a few days of work this week so have dedicated some time to the boat, heres another pic of some progress, some vents have been made by heating plastic rod and slowly bending, another vent up against bridge bulkhead made from tube and blanking off front and back, exhaust stacks have also been put together, and the over sized spot light support bracket constructed...
Trucker
-
Enlisted a little help %% to get the stern roller in today, bow one next,
i made a couple of helpers out of plasticine to 1"36 scale for a bit of comparison.
Trucker
-
Hi, All
I have had great success in contacting the captain of the actual boat im building via his company, he has been very kind and interested in my build of his boat and sent me quite a few pictures from in side the bridge, i have now removed my first attempt at fitting out the model and can actual see and try to model it as it should be. the white plastic around the inside creates all the straight and up right bulkheads and doubles up as some shelfing, hides pipes and wires. its going to be a cramped bridge but its quite small on the real boat.
Trucker
-
Just to add a little bit of detail and scale im fitting out the bridge, the scale is 1:36 so my little help comes in around 47mm and the three cups are around 4mm, just about pinch them between my fingers to make and glue the handles on, just dont know when to call it a day...
Trucker
-
Good thinking Trucker!...after all, no boat is complete without mugs for the crew. :-)
Ray.
-
:-) :-))
-
Nice work Tucker, I have learned to use my 10 year old granddaughter to help me with little details.......mind you my daughter freaks as I am letting her use superglue {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
Thank all for your kind words, its always an encouragement to receive,
with the pending delivery of the shafts i thought i would turn my hand to the Kortz Nozels after studying many builds of them on here i opted to have a go, they are 43mm plumbing connectors cut down to the required size, ive put a 20mm x 20mm piece of plastic at the top to connect to the hull, these are non steering ones so ive used small bolts through the hull, i have to counter sink the bolt heads at some point. i have also place a blank to help with alignment of the prop and shafts
Trucker
-
Hi, trucker, use countersunk screws instead of panheads, nemesis
-
Thank you for the advice , will search some countersunk bolts out for the final bolt down...
Trucker
-
Hi, all
I have busy with some detailing the bridge as per the pictures sent to me by the captain of the actual vessel.
theres loads more to try out and of course the painting..
Trucker
-
Heres a picture of a little bit of progress and some detailing in the shape of a Co2 extinguisher at this scale 1: 36 its around 15mm high and a dia of a little under 3mm, i made it a little smaller because of the paint going on it, The rudders and kortze nozels are progressing well too,,
Trucker
-
Hi all
Dry fit of my scratch made korts nozzle and rudder, props ordered so will soon be complete in this area.
Trucker
-
Hi,
Thought the crew would appreciate their aircon units :}
first pic is showing the three units second is there resting place.
Trucker
-
Hi all
had a go at constructing the schilling rudders this week end, as im not an engineer i found these quite hard with the drilling and getting the shape some what right, considering the thickness where i wanted to put the screws it didnt all go to my ideas, after drilling the rudders the shafts had a base silver soldered to them and secured by screws, this is my idea to keep every thing rigid, then a top plate was then added, but, i couldnt silver solder these, it would have reduced the plastic rudders to a mess, so i simply soft soldered these in place, as the pictures show there is some more shaping to do, but im getting there..
Trucker
-
Good on you, nemesis
-
Hi, All
Im about to make the outer shaft supports for severn supporter my work boat, these will be in brass with two supports above and one bellow, but, im wondering should the two top supports be a particular degrees apart, i have 60 degrees in my head, thinking i read this on the web but would be grateful if some one could put me right.
Trucker
-
hi every one,
heres a picture of the shaft supports ive been working on for a few days, silver soldered the upper section to the tube that slides over the shaft tube then the only way i could see to solder the lower section to the support bar below the shaft whilst in situ was to soft solder it,
Trucker
-
Hi, All
Ive had a go at scratch building a life raft, all bits and bobs from the scrap tin, im hoping to clean it up and sand where needed and then hopefully make a resin casting.
Trucker.
-
:-))
Shafts and supports are now secured and sealed, so, today i have put a plan in action on how to fit the rudders in and have a way of removing them for future maintenance of the props / shafts or even the rudders, so this is how ive managed the problem, i have put in place inside the hull a removable block which the rudder shaft passes this also acts as a support for the shafts, if needed once removed i can get just enough movement to push up and then pull out from under the hull the rudders or even remove the prop.
pictures show rudder and prop of starboard side and one showing the shaft block inside ...
Trucker
-
Hi, All
Latest pics showing a little bit of colour and props installed along with the rudders, the colour is Halfords red primer, this will be the final colour for the bottom but may need a bit of filler and tidy up and of course more paint before i can sign that bit off..
Trucker
-
Hi, All
Heres a couple of pictures of my work boat showing some progress O0 , shes in Mote Park at my club getting her bottom wet, one small leak appeared after an hour in the water so not too bad, and one picture of my belt drive set up, all dry fit at the moment but looking ok
Trucker
-
Hi, All
I have improved the looks and build design of my shillings rudders, this came about because im trying to come up with a design where upon they can be removed with very little fuss for any future maintenance , some rubbing down and reshaping and ive put a piece of square molding on the trailing edge to enhance a crisp edge.
Trucker
-
Hi. All
Severn Supporter has finally got her colours, and the rudders have been put in again complete with pins to aid removing them if needed later, a few other bits have been made including the support for the mast, this is going to be a folding mast as per the real one. there will be a few bit of paint work to touch up later but i expect that...
enjoy

Hi Every one
Things have slowed down on this build for one reason or another, i keep moving to one part to another with out finishing any , how ever heres yet one more piece under construction, details taken from the GA plan and the pictures within, this is the deck knuckle crane, its only going to be a static part so im going to try and detail it up as much as i can... Ive made it from plastic sheet, the white pieces in front are the templates i drew up for shaping.
TRUCKER
-
Great build and how cool is that belt drive system - amazing :-))
-
Thank you mark, its like a jigsaw at the moment, bits every where, im trying my hand at a bit of tiny printing too, this is one computer for the bridge its showing as the radar screen, this is only just just done hoping for better results.
Trucker
-
That looks great :-)) - this is one of the best things about our hobby. We can just give our ideas a go and if it doesn't work out well at least we tried but we often win. It keeps the old grey matter ticking over.
-
Hi, All
A days work here, dry fitted the Knuckle crane , completed four of the six hydraulic rams these were put together with telescopic fitting plastic tubes to get some where near the plan size, the brackets holding them down have been cut and shaped from block plastic, drilled and a plastic pin through the lot. I have put in the tow cable guides at the stern roller, these will painted up a little later.
Trucker

Hi there Trucker, I've not looked in for a number of months now but it's great to see your progress on the build and I really like the way you've tackled the korts and rudders. As far as I can remember I don't think I've ever seen removable rudder tube support blocks, good idea O0 .
Anyway, she's coming along very nicely - cheers!
Ray.
-
hi again fellow builders
ive been on the crane again today, the final hydraulic rams are fitted, they proved to be quite fiddley to attach, i made one end free moving to give me some help to get the crane to the required position but had a little accident with the super glue so its now fixed but it doesnt look too bad..
Trucker
-
Just adding those 2 centre rams makes a big difference to the overall appearance of the crane - good work yet again Trucker, I like it O0
Cheers,
Ray.
-
:-)) hi Ray thanks for looking in, im amazed at the things that can be put together from some drawings and some thought,
Trucker
-
Hi All
Heres ab few pics of a little more detailing on the crane and ive made a start to the the railings / sides, these are made from 4.8mm tube the bends done over a hot soldering iron, parts will also be filled with solid plastic sheet..
Trucker
-
sorry left this one out
-
Hi, All
Just a little update on my build, the sides have almost been completed, but now have to wait for the spring to get some paint on them, the crane is pretty much done, ive made most of the deck working area a hatch so i can access all the bits and bobs below, there is a layer of thick wooden planks in the deck area so im now working on that, using thin strips of wood.
Trucker
-
Hi, every one
I have completed the deck work area this morning, it is made up from a piece of 3mm ply with .5mm plastic strips going across giving it the four large section, laid in between these are .5mm wood strips i think theres about 135 pieces individually cut and glued down, i will have to give the wood some kind of water proof coating. This is all framed with 4mm angled plastic, the finished decking will be attached to the main deck / hatch opening and will be a removeable part for access to the inside...

Hello to All
heres a pic of the large eye that sits in front of the main towing winch, sorry dont know if it actually has a nautical name,
the bending of the 10mm tube caused lots of problems for me so i decided to make it in several parts then make good with filler and some sanding, thats where im at know. the construction was made up by the two main legs, a smaller rod was bent to a radius for each side, joined at top with a small 10mm piece, then car body filler used to fill up the radius, im sure once its sanded to a nice finish it will look just fine.

Some time ago a made a life raft master with the intention of a resin mould being made, well, this weekend i have done just that, i intended it to be a two part mould but the demoulding vaseline i used to help separate the halves did not do the job, so to save all my work i had to opt for a little bit of cutting down each side and made a single block mould, Resin made and poured the end result is quite pleasing, i have a little sanding and a tiny hole to fill, the pic shows the end result with one of the two vents still attached..
This moulding lark is truly another skill im learning..
Trucker
-
HI All
heres a couple of new pics showing one of my life rafts that is resin moulded with its cradle ive scratch made from perspex sheet, i did try brass and solder but it seemed just a little too much, im going to try and add some detail on them later once painted.( there are a couple of air bubble holes in view but they have been sorted now)

Hi, All
ive remade the spot light that sits above the wheel house on the work boat, construction was done using a cut down plastic marker pen , LED and silver reflective part in the light are from a broken head torch its bracket from pieces out from the scrap tub, wire from and old HDMI cable,it does light up and swivels up and down and rotates sadly not machanically, and to finish it off a lens will be fitted.

Hello All.
Had ago at building the ladder and cage, its taken me a few attempts to get the final product including a couple of plastic trials
over all considering the size im pleased,.. its all brass and soft soldering.
Trucker
-
Looks good congratulations. I would think very carefully before attempting anything like that. <:(
-
Nice brasswork!
-
Thank you for your kind remarks, its not always easy to try some thing new, but, if you keep at it and use the failures as small gains then the end result will always appear.
Trucker
-
Hello All
much of the same pictures here, but, since the last pictures i have taken apart the whole cage/ladder build and filed every piece down to 3mm width and then rebuilt it, WHY, because when i offered it up to my model it looked well out of scale compared to the rest of the bridge/wheelhouse and the GA plan im using for my reference .
Trucker
-
Hello, All
to days acheivement has been to complete the severn supporters mast and cage, this is all scratch made and made to the GA plan that i have, its given me many hours of thought on how to put it all together as its all soft soldered and at 1.35 scale its a bit delicate where many of the joint are close to each other, BUT, using Mayhem as my to go to resorce centre there are mant threads to read and grab advice, so i say THANKS to you guys.
Trucker

HI, All
I ve been working on the mast again all the light casings are on minus lenses and bulbs theres a few antennas and a couple of satellite receivers (mushrooms) getting close to some etching primer and top coat and light testing.
Trucker
-
Hi All
The mast is almost finished now so its time to add and connect a few lights, first up the standard running lights, these are 3mm LED wired in series, the wire used at mast level will all be the ultra fine stuff from component shop, All the wires will be thread down through a small diameter piece of shrink tubbing running down the back of the mast and then hidden below the deck above the wheel house, then all the wiring will go to its appropriate resistor and finally to a split plug hidden inside the accommodation, fingers crossed any way.
Trucker
-
more work on my mast lighting plan completed today, i have now managed to get the restricted movement lights to work, its all becoming extremely fiddly.enjoy

Hi, All
Progress is painfully slow at the moment due to work etc, but after a difficult past few months rubbing the boat down because of a bad paint issue i have finally got the hull looking nice again , pushing ahead now so hoping my progress will be good,
Trucker
-
Hi, All
Finally carried out the official naming ceremonial duties today, full of pomp and glory (beer and a pat my back), the lettering is 5mm white vinyl self adhesive.. %%
Trucker
-
heres a view of some progress this week, and some other parts placed on to aid the picture.
all the deck has been coated light grey rattle can, had to decant the paint because i didnt like the idea of masking all the blue, i found painting with a brush this was very problematic, examples are paint drying too quickly and some brush marks after some gently rubbing down i finally settled for what i had, so the hull is almost done, :-))
Trucker
-
What a great build - So many builders stop when they have an issue such as paint but you kept going and the final result shows. Gotta love that brass work too!
-
hi all
i couldnt achieve my idea of hiding the wiring on the brass mast so ive remade the mast using a turned down dowl, grooved out the back edge that i will fill and reshape once im happy with the working lights, i intend to attach the brass ladder aswell.
Trucker

That's it - never, EVER, empty your bin !
Your working skills and the spirits are admirable - congratulations!
Sailing any time soon?

hi all, ive had some trial and errors with the mast, the nice brass work version didnt quite suit the plan because the tubing used should have been the next size up so i could have put the wires through it, the second attempt i tried my hand at turning down some wood that went ok until i decided to hollow it to put the wires through, trouble struck again, not to be out done ive made one out plastic tube, managed to hide away much of the fine wires still used the brass ladder and cage so once painted i think it will be fine.

Hi every one,
ive had a play around with my 3D printer, ive designed a 10 foot container to 1/35 scale in fusion 360, it took 11 hours to print, it will require a little bit of a clean up but im hoping it will look nice on the deck of my work boat, now im looking forward to designing other bits .
Trucker

Hi, All
I see the mayhem has gone quite recently, suppose every one is busy in the man cave O0 , i have, attached pictures are of the small flood lights attached to the top of the wheel house, these are scratch made using my 3D printer for the main light body, recycled LED lights from a kids battery operated car and a bit of plastic for the backing, the size is 13mm these have been tested and now waiting for some paint, these are going to be my last bits of electrical components in Severn Supporter, its maxed out with leccy bits and bobs.
