Title: Damen 2810 1/96 scale- again
Post by: Umi_Ryuzuki on June 14, 2023, 08:51:54 pm
Oops I did it again.

Well, after taking the little tug up to the regatta in Seattle and entering it in
maneuvering this year, it performed really great. 'What a nice little tug...'  %)
Afterwards one of the ol' guys asked if I could buildup one for him. O0

So I got a start on it last week.

That's really nice, but why 1/96? It must be tiny.

Wow, so cool! First of all, congratulations!
And please do a build log on this, very interesting subject. I wish I could do one too someday.
All the best!

Thank you Hama. The Files are available for free. Tiver21 ASD on youtube.

1/96 is the scale that most of the warship builders use around here. ok2
The tug comes out about 305mm long.

Assembled the stacks to the deck house, and primed, and
stuck some paint on the hull and decks. And cleaning up the bulwarks.
Title: Re: Damen 2810 1/96 scale- again

Literally waiting for primers and paints to dry.
Also filling and shaping some corners on the bulwarks.
3d printers may be quick, but if the files are soft, you'll get soft prints.
The area where the bulwarks turns in toward a gangway gate is particularly warped.

So, while looking at Smit tug references I noticed that I had not put the
straps over the 'tootsie roll' fenders on the bow and stern of my tug.
The straps are made up of Grosgrain Ribbon, 1/8" (3mm) is the smallest
width, so I cut six inch 150mm, lengths, and ran a bead of white glue down
the length. This will hold the webbing together, and stop runs and stray threads when
I cut ... try to cut it down to 1/16" (1.5mm) widths. Taping the ribbon down on the
cutting board against a thin straight edge helps.

Meanwhile back at the paint shop... I think the branding shows now.  :-)

Can you show us some close ups of the deck crane, please.
I've downloaded the deck equipment files  from your link and I'm wondering if they will enlarge to 1/50.
Thanks

I am not printing the deck crane for this build, but here are some photos of the original build for my tug.
I was trying to print everything on the FDM printer, But I'm sure, that a resin printer would give better results.
Printing the pilot house was much better on the resin printer.

Creating bushings and bearings for the Z-drives, and working on
the alignment of the propeller shaft bearings.  :-)

Waiting on a couple of gears for the drive.
Meanwhile, I worked on the bow deck. The future owner asked for some strongly mounted bitts.
I also wanted to make a new stern bitt/staple, to match the livery.

 :-)

The stern bitt printed out alright... compared to original file with crane base.
I spent most of the day working on a tow hook...  %) We'll see how that comes out.

Sincerely, I should stay away from CAD, I spent all day, and forgot to eat...

And then, ... "There's no way that is 1/96 scale, but it is, and it's too small.
It has no presence on the deck. So I printed something in between the base
 scale, 1/48, and 1/96, and it's probably 1/84.

Gears and propellers arrived yesterday.
Got a start on assembly.  :-)

Gears are 18t pinion, 30t crown, 10t pinion, 20t crown
The motor is 22k rpm +/- on 6v.

Thank you Martin  :-)

Okay, hur dur moment.
If the ESC keeps shutting down while testing, it just might be that you
have set it up for LiPo, and are doing your testing with Gel Cell batteries.  %)

So after battling that yesterday evening,... after trying different ESCs(both lipo) and
different receivers and motors free, and alternate transmitter and receiver, and other motors.
Waking up fresh in the morning, it was almost easy to figure out the issue.

So with that figured out, I spent a bit of the day working out the mast. :o

I think just a few things to look over and tidy up...

Ooh, maybe a logo on the stacks.

The fire monitors and Smit logo added, a little clean up, and got
the hull wet and ballasted. Tested the drives before sealing them up.

Hello Umi, really like how it is turning out. I had watched tiver21's YouTube videos on this project but wasn't sure how reliable and practical this was going to be, but the fact that you are building your second one answers that question.

I tried to download the sketch-up file linked by him, however I have not been able to scale it down properly in sketch-up or output STL files are are good for printing. Would you be kind enough to share the files, I would love to build one myself.

Good luck with rest of the build.

Hi Kalrup,
The original files are 1/144 scale. I scaled each STL file up in the slicer, by 150%, so that
I could print the model out at 1/96 scale. The only issue I have run across is that the bow
of the tug, well, the "front falls off". It has come out truncated, short the last 6 or 7 millimeters. So I cement a 1/4" piece of material to the bow and cut, file and sand it to shape. But all the
scaling, for print size is done in the slicer programs.  :-) will PM you

... Do you have a link to where you got the grears from? If not I will look it up, shouldn't be a problem to locate them.
Hi Kalrup,

The Motors are 22-26k rpm, but
has been substituted, as it is no longer available. FK-180PH-3542 DC 3.7V 5V 6V 22200RPM
.
All the gears were 2mm shaft drilled and press fit onto 3/32" brass shaft.
The pinion on the motor was 18t and the pinion on the vertical shaft was 10t (https://www.ebay.com/itm/155432651656?hash=item2430820b88:g:tSsAAOSwWtNdgEB~).
.
The Crown Gears were 28t on top of the vertical shaft (https://www.ebay.com/itm/165487796314?hash=item2687d7605a:g:pOEAAOSww71dhyWq), and 20t on the propeller shaf (https://www.ebay.com/itm/154999321467?hash=item2416adf37b:g:ws8AAOSwJyJfjWar)t.
.
Propellers were from Cornwall Model Boats Raboesh C-type, 25mm 4blade propellers M2 shaft, Left and right hand.  (https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/Raboesch-170-Series-Brass-Model-Boat-Propellers-M2-Thread.html)

Since my job change from seafaring to more shore based, I happen to work on Damen 2810 ASD tugs, in fact the boats I actually work on were "born" with the Smit Logo on the funnel base.

You are missing a few conspicuous details on the aft deck: 2810 has chests on the aft deck, on port side containing the fuel bunker station, on starboard the lb oil filling, and slops discharge connections, and the transom contains two equipment boxes.
The hull fendering goes all the way around, and the rear rope guide is in reality a LOT more massive: Where your print shows a flared out piece of sheetmaterial where the rope goes through, the real thing is massively filled out on the outside made out of heavy duty tubing instead of flared sheetmetal (apologies if those descriptions are limping a bit, English is not my native language, and tugboats never were my field of expertise so I am less fluent in the jargon of tugboats than that of the seagoing tankers I spent 31 years on).

I had a pic of the ex Smit Hudson, with the rear rope guide and PS bunkerstation visible, but I seem somehow not able to upload it, sorry about that.
In 10 days I'll be on board of another 2810 again and able to take some pics. I'll try and post them if I have figured out how by then :D
