Title: Desco shrimp trawler
Post by: B.B on January 16, 2025, 08:30:28 am
Latest model on the go (actually 1 of 2)started both of them during October 24 , this one is of an American Desco shrimper design  just  52 x 16 x4.75 inch's . The keel ,deadwood , stem areas are of  Colonial teak, the frames from an old pine bed base, the stringers 12 x 3.5 mm  ,ribs 6 x4 mm & planking are beech from kevin Rasmussen ( Kevin gave me a loan of his spare Proxon table saw , in the photo , have been using that to cut the ribs and decking strips of beech only) and the 2 transom  sections of Red cedar from Stuart Cribb, cheers.  :-)) ......

Interesting to see the tools you're using. What's the well used bench saw? The blue one?

Ooh I'm gonna enjoy this one - Looking great so far Brian and the little Proxxon table saw is good tool but I have found them noisy.

Looking forward to seeing this progress and all of the carpentry tips I can learn  - good luck with your build mate  :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Steve, that saw is a 15 inch planer 'Carba-Tec' made in Taiwan , we bought that early 90's to do a job which never happened ,so it sat in the shed till a few years ago I cleaned it up and respray (different blue) so have only started to use it in the last couple of years...Hi Mark, for the size of them they are noisy ,but found if I am going to cut more than a couple of strips I will hook the vacuum to it ,that solves the noise of it as you can't hear it for the noisy vacuum cleaner  and keeps it cool other wise it cuts out.
With these photo's all the stringers in and garbed planks attached then steaming the ribs and letting them set in the jig, the last shot showing her all ribbed up , and the start of the beamer ( which I will put up) cheers ..

4mm planks - now that is very difficult

Hi Mark , actually with her shape no problems planking her as they are fairly fine towards the bow area and being a full deadwood no hollow heal the planking runs through tho the stern area easy as. With these photo's  took her off the jig, then for the bases for both models put the Camphor cut offs through the thicknesser also a section of Red cedar, which will also be used with the bases , before starting on the shelfing and deck beams ,pre installed the running gear , servo frame and ESC bases ( later 2 not shown), installed the aft knees and the bow knees, also gave her a coat of wood preserver ,then about 4-5 days later she was painted out with X40-Bond Coat....Cheers  :-)) ....

Amazing work Brian - here's a confession; when I saw that you had used different type headed screws for the motor mounting my OCD popped out and went into over drive - sorry mate  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: {-) {-) {-)

It would make a great hull for a nice steam plant.

As much as I love your normal Australian fishing boats, these two new builds are really interesting for being something different!

Thanks Guys ,,the screws Mark ,was that the 2 different types holding the motor on it's end plate ? they are only temporary :). This section pf photo's deck beams and lift out sections done and dusted , then pre fitted the 1.5 mm deck ply prior to attaching the sponson's ( Tassy Oak), then attached the 2 sections of deck ply before strip decking her, I used a section of Colonial Teak for the centre strip , then the remainder of decking is of 1.2 mm beech with the black cardboard strips in between and the joints. Fitted the front hatch combing and also the w-house combing, before a coat of wood preserver (next the bullwark post) ...Cheers   :-)) .....

Hi there, some more of the shrimp vessel build. The main hatch lid , installing the staunchon post & planking the bulwarks , with these vessels they would line the insides of the bulwarks.  For the w-house base placed a deck combing down first then another which will be the base of the w-house & foundation for the side studs.Cheers  :-)) ......

Hi There, Thanks guy's, some more of the w-house ,construction of the karle raft ( still has to have the ropes attached after painting), showing the pivoting brackets for the base of the trawl arms and the main boom, decided to make it separate then attach it to the lower section of the mast ( easier), I don't know how others solder lugs etc in close quarters to each other without the heat messing it up and profound words slipping out ,with this I could submerge the areas already soldered in water otherwise I wrap wet rags around already soldered ares while soldering close by , well take care ,cheers. :-)) ......

How many of us would just cut simple square pieces of ply and use these to hold motors etc down in the hold where no one ever sees them, and yet you lavish as much time and effort in your mountings as you do the visible parts of your builds!

You NEVER cease to impress Brian.

Morning all, thank you Ballastanksian  :-)) . Next section of the build construction of her trawl booms or I think the yanks call them outriggers ? from Tassy oak and brass, cutting the rungs for the aft ladder which connects at the top of the boom to the top of the bulwarks above the transom. I'm not sure what they call this frame it is solely for tying off ropes etc situated behind the main winch, I find it pays off to spend a little bit of time bracing off something like this before soldering . Cheers  :-)) .......

Based on the days of sail a name could be a pin rail (as in a rail for belaying pins).

Very nice work your trawlers are very different from French trawlers :-))

Hi PierreP, this one also is a bit different to our Australian trawlers, being an American shrimp trawler they have a different rigging set up known as the Texas rigg ,the base of the trawl arms are connected to the lower section of the main mast , and they dump the produce onto the deck and sort off the deck , and stil do to this day ??... Next section, attaching all the foot rungs to the mast and boom, this time I pre rigged her ,used the usual s.s tracer wire and mostly s.s chain (Chinese) the magnet doesn't attach to it so that's a plus  O0 ??. Then the painting, the hull had a coat of wood preserver then 2 undercoats , fun begins with the painting of all the bits n pieces , cheers.. :-)) ....

Hi there, thank you for your comments Paul & Mark ....Well launched her on Sunday at our Model Club morning at Ballina ,turned out to be a nice morning ,compared to previous days, water still muddy from all the rain but never less a good morning for the launch of the Yankee  shrimper "Desco-Lady" . My good neighbour  Bez drove her for me while I took photo's and video footage of her. Very pleased with the way she performed , her ballast consist of 4 KG 12 V battery and 2 blocks of lead totaling 2.6 Kg , on her next run may put another Kg of lead in her, cheers  :-)) .....
