Eveing?

Is this something like eve-teasing? (You get signs on Indian buses telling you not to do it). I'll leave the rest to your (no doubt) fertile imaginations.

Hi there,

do you fancy making your own?? They arent that difficult:

Couple of flat needle files, some ten thou brass shim.

pair tin snips, flat nose pliers - also 1/16 diameter tube and some 15 amp single core cable

I make all my own - that's why none of our doors will shut? ;D

only joking - seriously they arent difficult to make at all.

OK everyone, the hinges are for Jan's Puffer,? I was hoping I could sneak the question quietly onto the Forum but Jan spotted it!? :P
The TOP & Bottom hinges look the best bet, 2 pairs of each please Jan. Please see if they sell? suitable screws too please.

Jan's Puffer is in it's final stages and will have a major update on Mayhem once it's finished.... honest!

Martin

PS. Thanks for that Blurbird, I knew you'd know how to make them ;D  - Do you think we should have a hints and Tips page on the Forum

Martin .Did you get the bolts for your hinges? I tried 14 and 16 BA but lost most the nuts and did not think they looked all that good, I then used 3/32 rivets and found they looked better and it did not matter if you lost them.a few picks

Martin, if you are heading for really fine hinges- just ask your local optician for a a pair of old glasses- which had been left to throw away. They are the finest I know and you may use them down to a scale of about 1:48...  ;)

Help with a few things please:

1. Speaking of LED's anyone got an idea how to defuse led so they give off a more incandescent glow?
I want to put an led in 2 mast head oil lamps on Jan's Puffer but want them to give off a glow....

2. Can anyone recommend an on line "doll house" fittings firm for 1/24 fittings?
( Buckets, brooms, things found lying around on an old boat! )

3. Does anyone have a dozen 1/32 rivits ling around that they would like to donate to a Long drawn out cause?

Try Action

'TWIN FLICKER'   two independant random flickering outputs adjustment of effect/rate P90) - PCB kit with case

This is a microcomputer driven flasher to run two alternate flash operations, either alternate double flash or alternate single flash. This single project will simulate  OIL LAMPS,CANDLES, OPEN FIRES, & ARC WELDERS. Ideal for lighting on old steam boats. Each output has the current capability to control any type of bulb or LED up to 200mA provided they are of a suitable voltage for the supply volts you are using (three GOW BULBS) Tiny cased unit with input and output screw connectors. OK for 6 to 12 Volt operation. Screwed case size - 40mm x 27mm x 17mm. Full PCB kit less wire.  SCREWDRIVER  CONNECTION.

Martin,

LEDs

use amber Leds..  they work well  as they are not so intense, as the other colours..
I use these for illuminated model railway buildings..  much less harsh than the white ones.

you could also try "glass paint" to tone them down ?

Hi Martin,

lightly sand the LED's with fine sanding pads from Halfords, it works in the same way as a frosted light bulb or diffussed wall light fitting. You will get a diffussed multi-dirrectional glow, rather than a powerfull bright hot spot.

Trust me...it works!

Well done Martin  :D :)

Is it possible to use all lights of the puffer with this unit?
Title: Re: Puffer Build
Post by: riggers24 on October 07, 2006, 12:14:00 pm
Hi Jan,

If the unit can't do all of the lights, is it not possible to fit a second unit. There should be enough space for the second unit to fit in. With fitting a second unit you could have the interior lights a dimmer or brighter then the mast lights.

Marc

P.S Martin, Sorry if this is more work. Doing a grand job. ;)

Too busy either catching up on sleep or busy with the puffer
Title: Re: Puffer Build
Post by: Martin (Admin) on October 07, 2006, 08:32:53 pm

Yeap, sleeping and I seem to have a cold coming on.... either that or I'm developing an allergy to the gallons of paint I seem to be using on the Puffer!  ;)

The Puffer is a great project and I'm developing a strong respect to all you guys that take on such models and even more so the scratch builders. Don't get me wrong the Puffer is a great kit and I'm really enjoying the build but I took it on with the wrong attitude, it's not a 100 Meter sprint, even a 200 or 400 Meter race.... it's definitely a marathon! Once I got my head around the time aspect of the build, it became easier... that and Jan's chasing emails!!!

Anyway the Action Twin Flicker can supply 200mA - 2 or 3 'grain wheat' bulbs or a string of LEDs see new video on review page on mayhem - http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Builds/Puffer_Jan/Flasher.htm (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Builds/Puffer_Jan/Flasher.htm)

I have already fitted the Puffer with 7 x 6 volt 'grain wheat' bulbs because I thought that bulbs would give less directional output and give a warmer glow than LEDs. To make the lights in the wheelhouse would need another Twin Flicker , cheap enough at Ģ16 or we can "just" change the bulb for LED's..... can you get OFF White LED's???

What say you Jan, it's your boat?

Regards,
 Martin  ;-)

Title: Re: Puffer Build
Post by: Cargo on October 07, 2006, 08:47:32 pm
Iīm not quite sure but i guess that older puffers had only oil lamps in use. I dont think there was any electrical generator attached to the steam engine. So i think all lamps should have the same slightly "flickering", not only those attached to the mast. Thats why i think we should use all lamps with those units, if it is possible at this stage to change to it. If this means to buy another twin flicker, thats ok with me.

I must say that Martin is doing a real good job, the build is very time consuming, more then Martin and I expected  :o

So lets drink another beer on Martin and Bradders  ;D

Title: Jan's Puffer - or 'The never ebnding story!'
Post by: Martin (Admin) on February 23, 2007, 11:31:31 pm

Right slight disaster.....  the Campanion way & Toilet hut have gone missing !!!!
( Jan is 1. Gonna kill me. 2. Not believe me! )

OK The Puffer is near as dammit finished but my "good mate" Bradders decided "Today we clean the workshop!"
It been a long time coming and like all good modellers I was gonna do it next week anyway! But Bradders has his own way of doing things.... the only thing he didn't use was a bulldozer!   >:-o )

Well the workshop looks much .... different!
Lots of cupboards, shelves and racking moved around, tons of stuff in the skip and EVERYTHING rearranged...
I'd forgotten we had a carpet in here!

Anyway in all the flurry of activity ( bordering on maniac ) the Companion way and Sh--house are now AWOL!!!

We searched everywhere and then looked everywhere again which only resulted in another workshop tidy up and makeover but no missing woodwork  >:-o >:-o

It not nice to be  faced with "Skip diving" on a damp Friday night?!  :((
I now stink of 'odour de Skip'  but after an extensive search of a very big skip we didn't find them - I hate Bradders.

Now I have to make the two structures again ..... from scratch.

Well I'm now 4 hours into the reconstruction but I now need the hinges again,
HS93, yours look great, please tell you bought them, they're very cheap and available next day delivery!!! - I hate that Bradders bloke!

Tee hinges look best, can anyone ( apart from Bradders... I stopped speaking to him about 12:30 ) recommend a dolls house website where I can order some.... quickly!

TTFN,
Martin I.H.T.B.C. ( I hate the Bradders club   ;D )

Yes, quite a bit of a list .......   :o

It a bit tricky ballasting her as we will have to remove all the ballasting before sending her to Germany to reduce the shipping costs.
Currently she is ballested down with 4 'gell cells' and she still wasn't fully down to her water line!

Anyone give us a few thoughts about ballasting this / flat bottom displacement vessels?

( The "truss" is my good mate Doug's launching craddle, which turned out to be essencial as is the first picture, the Puffer is actually floating 2 inches above the lakes landing stage! Thanks again Doug. )

I trust (no pun intended) Jan will be pleased with his ballastless (sp???) Puffer. A real nice build I thought.

I hope Bradders didn't get his suit too wet.

Do you have any ideas why shes lying that hard to one side? And how much weight was in her?

Jan,

I thought Martin might have replied (maybe he has done so via email?). The puffer had 1 12v SLA and 2 6v SLA batteries as ballast. These were not nearly enough to bring her to the waterline. The list was due to one of the batteries moving when she was launched. I would think she will need quite a bit of lead quite low down. This will make her very stable I'm sure.

Happy sailing, she is a great looking boat.

Cheers

Doug

Just reading the message from Doug regarding how many batteries Jans puffer has in it, I might have to rethink the batteries that power my puffer. I have 1 12v SLA plus 2 7.2v nicad packs. I think on that basis I will need to secrete a house brick around the puffer to get it to its waterline.

Looks like my flexible friend is getting another outing this week, another 12v SLA perhaps

Martin,
Cut some lead flashing and lay along the bottom of the hull.
As long as it is either fixed in permanently you can mount the battery box(s0 on top.
OR
Cut and fit the flashing and use the battery in the battery box to hold it in>

Bob

TVM. All these suggestions, and probably a few more less helpful ones, were discussed last week at the pond.  The main reason the boat has not been properly and permanently ballasted is the cost of shipping it to Germany and not knowing what batteries Jan was going to use.

That's Martin's story and he's sticking with it  ;D

Martin allready knows what batteries i want to use, maybe he has it forgoten  ;)

2 similiar to these:
12V
7,2 Ah
L: 150,0 mm
W: 65,0 mm H: 94,0 mm,
Weight: 2700,0 g

In a Modelboat article he talked about 5-6 Kg of extra weight including the batteries.

Hi,  I think that it will have to be ballasted out once Jan has it in his possession and then it will be to Jan's preference which way to get the best trim.

here's my 10 penneth.   diver leads (like old type lead shot) mixed with resin and poured around the batteries which have a thin slice of foam around them so that when the resin is hard the batteries can be removed if required.

Yes we would liked both options, lead strips or lead shot in small bags and then set permanently in resin.
I like the idea of the lead battery tray.... :D but we've already fitted ply plates down in the bowels.

Hi Martin
Nothing in particular, I was just enjoying reading about the build as this is my first
I've not started yet as we're moving house in a few weeks so the permissions officer is keen to start packing everything into boxes, and I,ve broken my ankle.
When I make a start I'm sure you'll be sick of me asking questions
Anyway if you could get the rest of the build blogg up that would be great
Many Thanks

Anyway, the instructions and diagrams for the winch are..... well, not very useful!
Someone seems to think steam winches are an everyday occurrence in modern daily life....

After 3 or 4 assembles and disassemblies I finally had the thing together..... correctly!
The kit supplies  a piece of ply for the winch base but I substituted this for a piece of plastic (CD case)
that would look more like iron plate when painted.

(http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2018/01/14/Puffer1029.jpg) (http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/8dOBD)

The various pipework casting were then cleaned up and painted.

(http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2018/01/14/Puffer_2742.jpg) (http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/8dcQX)

Painting the winch was quite enjoyable. I painted the whole thing matt black, then over the next few days
painted various bits with other blacks, gloss, satin, smoke and white.
In the end a nice little model in it's own right.

Bradders then added the coaming for the main cargo hatch and the wheel house.
We would make the cargo hatch to fit the coaming we'd cut but make the coaming
to fit the wheelhouse interior and then cut the hole to fit that coaming.

The wheelhouse didn't sit flat on the deck but this would be compensated for when fitting
the false / show deck.

Next thing to attempt was the aft stanchions and rails.....
These a while metal and although the rails are made of soft copper, they are
much harder harder/stronger than the white metal stanchions , so care has to
be taken not to force or bend them. I formed the the rails complete on the
deck before attempting to fit them. The stations holes were opened up with
a small drill bit in a pin vice. Nothing is glue/fixed down at this stage... I would
only knock it off while doing something else.......  :-\

The hatch was Bradders little baby! he was quite enthusiastic about and came up with all
sorts of different ideas and methods for doing it, it was like he was painting the Sistine Chapel !
It looks very simple but at one stage I counted up 12 different materials and glues used in it's
construction. As I pointed out before, build the hatch to the coaming you've already formed
on the deck so it's not to loose (falls or & not water tight) and not too tight, (won't fit at all).
Remember to allow for shrinkage, glue, varnish, paint etc, a couple of layers of paper around
the coaming should do.  Making the small triangular pieces and gluing them in place was a
particularly frustrating and aggravating exercise....

Bradders and I had many, many long arguments over the final finish of the hatch.
Should it be black or tarpaulin colour?
Should it be clean or stained?
Should it be open or closed?
Should it have cargo showing or not?
What, if any, cargo should be showing?
If not, should you be able to see into the hold?
What colour should the hatch planks be?
What glue should we use? Etc, etc....
But in the end, there was a simple solution.... Bradders did what he wanted to do! ......

The white stuff is PVA "canopy glue" that dries clear.

The "tarpaulin" was glued down with very slow set superglue, stretched and held in place
with straight edge ( with selotape on them) and clamped in place for 24 hours.

Next thing to attempt was the aft stanchions and rails.....
These a while metal and although the rails are made of soft copper, they are
much harder harder/stronger than the white metal stanchions , so care has to
be taken not to force or bend them.

It is maybe better to use stanchions made out of brass. The white metall is to soft.

Next to be tackled were the convenience & the companion way hatch (s***er/toilet/head & stairwell hut).
Again the instruction leave yo much to your own imagination as to method of construction, so if it looks
right, it probably is right.

Getting back to the cabin (superstructure) and wheel house...
(First contruction steps can be found here: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Builds/Puffer_Jan/Part_6.htm)

The Fibreglass cabin needs to the sanded back a bit and cleaned to create a clean gluing surface
and later, painting. The white metal fittings are glue on with thick superglue, everything else slow set
2 part epoxy.

Decide where you want the hand rails to be and drill holes for the 'storm rail stanchions'.
Remember to allow gaps for the ladders rails... I didn't. You will also have to start thinking
ahead where things like the steering chains will orientate as the 'down pipes'  also cross the
hand rails. This involves marking out boundaries of the wheel house floor and the the steering
chain run. Mine didn't match up to the plans but Bradders put that down to my "ignore the plans"
approach!

Fitting the doors is simple enough... I got the fitting wrong 4 times... and theirs only 2 of them!
Remember the doors fit vertically to the keel, NOT the deck......... make that 5 times!
Oh, and the door hinges are towards the bows not the stern.......... 6 times......
My hinges are made of copper wire as Jan wished the doors to be functional.

You will also have to start thinking ahead where things like the steering chains will orientate as
the 'down pipes' also cross the hand rails. Again, all fittings are perpendicular to the keel, not the deck.

Right the wheel house.
Bradders and I had a fearful argument about who was going to build the wheel house.
I argued that I should do it as I had already started the cabin, Bradders argued that he wanted it done right!  >:(
In the end I got to build it as he was going off on holiday for two weeks... which was a holiday for me too!  {-)

Grab up all the wood but be carefull not to mark up the printed side as this will only be varnished not painted.
Farley straightforward construction methods here, PVA wood glue or thick superglue, reinforce the corners, sand
everything until it fits, make sure everything is square and vertical. The top of the cabin in meant to be parallel to
the keel, so I worked to that. As I figured out that the wheelhouse would be on and off 'like a fiddlers elbow', I
covered the cabin roof with cheap selotape and superglued the floor down to that to give me the slight starboard
to port curved floor and worked up from there. to ensure the wheelhouse sides fitted perfectly, I used a small
torch to look for gaps underneath the walls.

Continuing the Wheelhouse build.....

Framework, door jams, handrails cut and fitted.

Holes for window frames cut to match each frame.... they were ALL slightly different sizes.  >:(

2 part thin roof cut and glued down.

Consideration of the work light, Jan preferred the original white metal one supplied with
the kit... which I decided to make work ... big mistake! ( The one on the right.)

The ladder was a bit of quandary, it a bit short and the feet are at the wrong angle.

Inside painted with satin / dull white ( to tone it down a bit ).

I had "a bit of trouble" with the wheelhouse roof.... about 5 weeks worth of trouble!
I started of with Tamiya paints and as you can see, it didn't take to the wood well.
I was brush painting but even after 6 coats, it was still patchy ?!?!?!
I tried sanding and solvent cleaning back to the wood but 3 attempts later, still patchy....
Bradders informed me "that it was all my fault", (a stock saying between us now) and
said he would spray paint it. Two attempts at spraying later, it was pronounced that
"the paint was bad." We bought another bottle(ette), immediately the difference
was apparent - the paint was bad!

I was sort of happy with the finshed....... but it did look crap!

I wanted to shave some sort of texture on the wheelhouse roof and hid the wood grain.
My first bright idea was painted sandpaper... easy enough!...... No!

First job, remove the secondary roof and clean up......

Clean it all off again, wipe it down with turps and leave to dry on an a clean cloth.....
"What about a tarpaulin roof!?!" Yeah! That'll be easy to do!

Bit of cardboard, bit of cotton (my workshop t-shirt), bit of PVA glue, splash it all over!

Hi Gary,
It was 'wet & dry' I was using!

OK so back to square one, a new clean piece of ply. To make it more interesting I thought I would add two battens to make it look more interesting. A long discussion with Bradders but this time I won... or Bradders couldn't be bothered with me any more.

A couple of coats of GOOD paint and it started to look OK...... 3 weeks after my first attempt!  >:(

Next adding frames and shelves to the interior.....

Oh course remembering to forget to paint the top of the woodwork which I now could not get at!
How did I do that? Easy! Being totally immersed in the build, in my mind, I though,
"As I hadn't fitted the door, I could always walk in the wheelshouse and touch up the paintwork
when I've nearly finished the build."

...well it seemed logical at the time.... or maybe it was all the paint fumes!!!

Once the interior was ..... sort of finished, time to paint it all again in light grey satin.

(http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/images/2018/01/14/PICT3013.jpg) (http://modelboatmayhemimages.co.uk/image/8kCkn)

Next trick was to add the electrics. It was decided that although LEDs are preferable
for low current drain and extreme longevity, incandescent 6 volt grain-of-wheat bulbs run at 4.5v(ish)
give a lovely "oil lamp glow."

The wheelhouse lighting consist of:

2 x 6v grain-of-wheat bulbs for internal lighting
2 x 6v grain-of-wheat bulbs for navigation lights
1 x 6v grain-of-wheat bulb for spotlight
1 x 6v grain-of-wheat bulb for stern light.

The 2 interior illumination bulbs were glued in place with "canopy glue" which is a white PVA type
glue that sets "almost" clear!

as the build progressed!!  >:(

With the majority of the structure of the wheelhouse finish, next was the furnishing's,
a wheel and binnacle. The wheel and gearing are just a set of white metal castings .
NOTE! Be careful the wheel handles break off very easily!

This is version one of the binnacle.....

Right, I've got a ton of stuff to do this afternoon at work but a few minutes out to carry on the saga of Jan's
Mountfleet Highlander Puffer build..... :-))

First of all, I must point out that the handles on the wheel are REAL easy to knock off, be careful.......  :embarrassed:

Right, on to the Funnel.
The Funnel is made up from bit of 22mmm plastic plumbing pipe. The white metal fitting needed very
little work to get the to fit properly but be careful, some part are very thin and easily damaged.

I used a piece of straight edged paper to mark lines round the pipe.

Pull it all apart again, sand down (key) the plastic funnel, clean up the fittings with a file /emery cloth /
fibreglass pencil and wipe everything down with wipe down with meths or thinners, (test on scrap first
as you don't want to melt the plastic!) I superglued everything in place.

And paint.....

With that done, 2 more mini projects are next, the fresh and boiler water tanks.

I made up the rectangular tank out of balsa and a piece of styrene but Bradders said the finish
would be too rough, so I covered it with thin clear plastic sheep... CD cover I think. The cylindrical
tank is another short length of plastic plumbing.

Really nice, keep adding the pictures!
Did you glue the cabin roof back on? I would just screw it down for ease of access to lights etc.

May since the last update, doesn't time fly when you have too much to do....!
I'll start adding some again soon.

BTW: The roof went on and came off again at least 3 times!  :embarrassed:

A truly inspirational presentation! One of the things which made it so helpful was including the things which went wrong!
