Title: The Model Boat Convention
Post by: stevebooty on March 18, 2011, 07:42:29 am

    The Model Boat Convention - 27th & 28th August  2011

Due to completely unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances the Show has had to leave Birchwood Park. The owners are redeveloping the restaurant in such a way that the available space will be considerably reduced and the layout will also be compromised. Also, this redevelopment work is currently scheduled to be carried out over the August Bank Holiday period. After a great deal of consideration and consultation with the Manageress at Birchwood, and with much regret all round, we feel that the Convention has no alternative but to leave.

However, we have been extremely fortunate in finding an alternative venue, a mere seven miles up the road, in Haydock Park Racecourse. This venue is easily accessible from the M6, Junction 23 and is well signposted. There is ample parking, has substantial good quality space suitable for our needs, and if we wish to use the 1st floor facilities excellent provision of lifts.

The Holiday Inn is located right next door, and there are Premier Lodges, a Thistle and a Ramada Hotel close by.

Currently our only problem is the provision of sailing water. We will have the ‘kids’ pool as used at Birchwood, and are investigation the provision of a larger temporary pool, as unfortunately there is no natural water available at the venue. We will advise you of progress on this issue ASAP.

We do hope you will feel able to join us at Haydock Park Racecourse.

For further information or responses to queries please ring 01492 583433 or 07789 348817 and speak to Jean Barlow.

Should you need a Pool as this seams to be an issue at present, there are option out there to rent a portable pool for the event.

Good luck at the new venue.I am sure we will all continue to support you as we appreciate the hard work that it must take to stage such an event. At risk of stirring up a hornet's nest can you get your heads together and bring the two factions together for the benefit of all.
Speaking personally I do not know what may have happened in the past and as the saying goes"I don't give a damn".I think we share a great hobby and it will benefit both punters and traders to get the two parties  to show some maturity and make this one of the truly top shows. If my observations offend I apologise and I know this topic has been discussed at length on this very forum, but I think this may be the best time to put the past well behind us.

                                                                                                                                                   Andrew(Balders)

I'll be attending as usual, shame it's not at Birchwood with the nice outside pool. Haydock is very simple to get to, probably easier than winding your way through the estate at Birchwood to be honest. just hope there will be something to sail on??  Dave.  {:-{ {:-{

I feel that this move of venue is actually a very good thing. The one criticism of the old venue was that it was too small to accomodate all who wanted to go (both trade & exhibitors) now that problem has been resolved, all be it at the cost of the lake that was an excellent feature of the old venue.
The fact that the show is moving to a quality venue such as Haydock Park is a big plus, I would have been worried, had it moved to some dingy sports hall, but at Haydock Park I think it will continue to go from strength to strength. Needless to say we (Component-Shop) will be there as usual. Of all the shows we attend each year, the Model Boat Convention has always had the best atmosphere, I'm confident that will continue.
In due course we will add details (maps etc) to our web site & post a link here to help people find the place - although Haydock Park is very well signposted.

That's all very well for a trader to say that but some of us like to sail as well as look at the boats on display. I personally think it's a blow...

Hopefully only a short term blow, there are 5 months to go and although there will be nothing like seeing some visitors up to their knees in rescuing boats   :} at the lake at the Conference centre, all possibilities are being investigated..

With this show getting ever nearer

The “Model Boat Chandlery” will again operate to satisfy the needs of modellers wishing to sell either their model boats or indeed any associated items at a hobby trading post.

The goods will be sold on the following basis, the choice of the options being left to the modeller: -

A daily display fee of £3 an item, whether the item is sold or not (payable in advance each day).  Items less than £10 in value = £1

Please find a downloadable form here...

www.modelboatconvention.co.uk/page3.php

The Model Boat Convention is a non-profit organisation, run by Volunteers. From the excess funds generated from the 2010 show we were able to make a donation of £500 to the RNLI, £300 to the MacMillan Nurses, and £200 to the Hoylake 1810 Memorial Fund This was to raise funds for a Statue to commemorate the 1810 lifeboat disaster at Hoylake.

Hello,

Just returned from helping to set up the Runcorn Model Boat Stand at The Haydock Park show.

What a fantastic setup !!, huge rooms, really big Club and Trader tables, and FREE parking for thousands of cars !!.
The rooms are well lit and airy, some are carpetted too !.

The Park is about one mile from the M6 Motorway, along the A49 trunk road to Ashton in Mackerfield town.
Looking forward to a good Weekend.

As John says, the new venue for the Boat Convention looks great, and some fine models being put on display, seen one in the Chandlery as well but I have been given VEry , Very Strict Instructions and also advised of the consequences if I come home with another boat... 8)  as if...

Don't forget the opening Ceremony will take place at 11 am In the Foyer if you are there first thing..

Just arrived back from the two Model Boat Convention venues and I must say that Haydock Park has proved itself to be an excellent replacement for the old Birchwood venue.

Parking the car is no problem at all and is just yards away from the exhibition hall.

There is now plenty of space for traders to show their wares and room for us visitors to closely examine them.  Visitors can move around in comfort and take time to enjoy the excellent Club displays.

Haydock Park itself and the Convention organizers are to be congratulated on what they have achieved in their first year and I am already looking forward to next year's Convention there.

The Birchwood Leisure Centre venue is exceptionally poor value now with it's £2 entrance fee. Fewer than 10 traders and just one display stand of model boats.  For a short time at around 11.30 am this morning, I was the only punter in the room and I never saw a dozen visitors while I was there.    I doubt I will go back to the Leisure Centre event next year, even if entry was free and I expect a number of traders will vote with their feet.

The day was great and althought a bit wet in the morning this cleared up for the Display pond to be put into good use for Have a Go by the Junior Vistitors to the show, a great display by the RNLI Teddys.. :} Blind Steering, The Ribble Probably overpaid Pollux tug Football team..(only 5 in the photo as one was sent off (or went to get a coffee ) and the Hovercrafts who used the pond and then progressed onto the tarmac area for a bit of speed drifting..

A few pictures from the day, many more pictures taken , a few more of my favourites on here on Sunday, all the others I will put on the Conventions Website after the event.

Also If you have any pictures from the Weekend and would like them put on the Convention site , please Pm me or see me at the show..

Hello,

Day One of the Haydock Show was a resounding success !!.
Visitors galore, traders with crowds around their stands and money changing hands.
Club stands were very busy all day with happy visitors.

This Show has got to be the best Show I have ever been to.
Best part of it is - - - - its on again tomorrow !!!

Evening all, I was going to post some photos but have managed to delete them off my camera, doh. Good show at Haydock Park but I missed not having the lake to sail on, that was part of the fun at the other site. I thought this was only a temporary move?? Plenty to look at, especially liked the huge Mobile Marine FTX tug on the second floor and Tyne Models 'Maersk Master' seems a bit pricey for a hull and plan though. Many thanks go out to the guys on with the Scottish Model Warship Association stand for bringing my winter project down from Glasgow, I hope Captain Ron is feeling a bit better now...
The show at the Birchwood leisure centre was quiet by comparison but still worth going to, personally I got more bits and bobs there than at Haydock Park. I think if the traders there go to the trouble to putting on a show then we should try and support them, it's not far away from Haydock Park after all. Some of the traders like Andy Griggs from Models By Design spend a day travelling up to these shows and back home again, the least we can do is go along. Afterall these shows won't be put on if they're not going to be supported, Dave.

I went to both shows today and got what I wanted  :-))

The Haydock park venue I found to be a bit cramped (Two way traffic in narrow passages) and stuffy in places, lacking a few traders and a bring & buy. But otherwise there was plenty of lovely boats to look at for inspiration and ideas.

The Birchwood show was badly sign posted but luckily the Sat-nav got me to the massive car park opposite the venue.
The venue is good, but there wasn't many people there. Only one display stand, but it did have a good deal of traders though and a bring and buy! Shame the swimming pool wasn't available?  {-)

What I don't get about it is why were there two shows? Or do I sense a bit of politics?
Shame
Anyway. Big thanks to both organizing teams and traders of both shows.

Passages were actually larger than the old venue at the convention centre, also not quite sure how you missed the bring and buy section opposite Hoylake and the three sisters club ?..  4 Long tables full of items for sale, I  saw plenty of models being sold..

Also 17 traders were there ..

As regards 2 shows, this is old news , just search the forum and you will get your answers.  Any debate about it on this thread will be deleated.

Just returned home from the show and a great weekend at the Model Boat convention at Haydock park.
Great venue for the show, really nice rooms and all with overhead TV screens showing model boat videos taken at various club and show events. Although this is a new venue the good friendly atmosphere has followed us to Haydock park from the Birchwood convention centre, thanks to all that dropped by for a good old natter and for everyone that showed interest in my efforts,
I even won an award.

Many thx for the convention commitee for organising the event.

A big thank you from the members of Kirklees Model Boat club to the event organisers for finding such a great venue at short notice. I must agree with the comments from sub driver a great weekend with some 570 models on display covering all aspects of model boating with something for all to see. A great venue to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Lots of questions have been asked over the two days of the convention. I think that this new location will prove very popular with both clubs and traders and will get better every year.

Having just returned from the Boat Convention at Haydock can I say that the venue was superb, plenty of room and a feast of models, the halls being carpeted were not so hard on the feet, access to the ground floor was easy with large doors, not sure how the Clubs on the first floor faired, but there was a number of very large models on display , the organisers are to be congratulated on their choice, I believe a reasonable sized pool is in the pipeline for next year, this should allow the modellers an opportunity to sail their models. Well done. Howard Q.

Evening all, here goes, two firsts in the same weekend, my first reply on mayhem, hello everyone ! second my first time attending a model boat show on the club stand (Kirklees Model Boat Club). Throughly enjoyed myself. I have attended other shows as a visitor and have attended other race courses for model railway exhibitions and this venue out classes them by far. I think I'm hooked, cannot wait for my next show invite (if the Boss OK's it)

I think myself and Russ should get 20% discount on next years admission as we missed 1 of the 5 rooms, only joking.  {-)  Enjoyed the show but personally I preferred the other location as it was all on one level, and had the 'lake' to sail on too. Quite a few people I've spoken to have said the same. I hope you get a better sailing area for next year. I'd like to know how much that FTX tug weighed fully ballasted, what a beast that was, Dave.  :-))

You Wish.. :} :}

As regards the old venue , if it had not been for the fact they were sudividing the room up by NON removable walls the Convention may have stayed there a few more years, There used to be more space there until they developed the upper floor and now the lower, It just was no longer suitable..Haydock Park has much greater scope for expansion.

And I have also spoken to many who thought the new Venue was superb, As always some will like it , some will not..  but the clock cannot be turned back we need to move forward and adapt and as you say hopefully a larger and deeper pond will sorted..

Ok being thick here, which is the FTX Tug..?.

Fair enough if they've spoilt the room at the old venue, still enjoyed the show at Haydock. The FTX tug was that huge pale blue one upstairs. Dave.  :-))

Quite a bit I would imagine..  The one I would like to have seen in action was the Blu Marlin.

Some of these remarks ,I just dont understand ,you come /go to a boat show convention to see what is on offer and other members boats ,you can sail on your pond at home ,by sailing at the shows ,its a strange way of a snub .The traders make an effort ,the clubs make an effort ,a small pond was there ,what is the problem with that , a few more stalls would be good ,but honestly to want to sail a model ,you can do that at your own pond surely .

It is always nice as a visitor to the show/ any show  to see models actually in action and that is how I read the posts. As it was even with the smaller sailing area than usual a fair number were sailed on it.. :-))

A few of the Pond area.

I think its good to go to a show and see boats on display and it is good to see boats sailing what they where designed to do and it helps to promote the hobby when people see how much fun it is sailing what you build.

Not having a big pond at Haydock was novel for me....for the past few years, I usually ended up going for a paddle  O0

I am uploading them to the conventions website but having fun at the moment, here is one of the club I took before the Show opened as quite frankly it was the only time I could get really long un-obstructed photos.

As they say Only dirty people wash.

I always remember as a youngster, watching an old John Wain cowboy movie where one of the characters said
" I have a bath every year whether I need one or not ",
