Title: LOCATIONS IN YOUR PROFILES
Post by: Tug-Kenny RIP on April 29, 2012, 04:55:07 pm

                               As the title says ...............................

Can you ALL please put your locations into your profiles.

The advantages will be apparent when it comes to getting in touch with fellow Mayhemers. It also helps with judging how far away you are when it comes to sending or collecting Boats and bits. You could also be invited to join local boat clubs near to you, or maybe get help from your nearest enthusiast.

The advantages go on and on.

Just click on your name and go to your profile page where it's quite easy to enter your nearest town. We don't need to know streets or any personnel details so your world will not be disturbed.

                      Thank you for your co-operation

Hi Ken,

Due to reasons I'm not prepared to go into, sorry, but no I wont put my location in my profile, and if it becomes a requirement to do so then I'll be leaving.

As this is an interweb forum, I don't see the point of needing to know where everyone else lives and why they need to know where I live.

If there's any reason that I need to inform another member where I live, (for sales/purchasing or any other reason), I'll tell them at that point via PM and it will most likely be my work address :-))

Mark.

Mark in your case you must have reasons not to disclose your location fair enough. As an example by reading their locations i have made to friends locally to me. Yes there are pros and cons but generally location can help. John.

I am of exactly the same view as Mark maybe not for the same reasons perhaps.  If I cant be a member of a forum because I object to being told that I have to put my location on or if other mayhemers are offended that they dont know whereI  live then I too will cease to be a member. I dont see a reason to be told I have to put my location on here.  Surpisingly, being an active model boater I do actually know where my local club is.  It sails in the park about 100 yards from my door, now there's a shock.    And if Im selling or buying something I might just get involved in a pm exchange to advise of location.

Why?
Title: Re: LOCATIONS IN YOUR PROFILES
Post by: Shipmate60 on April 29, 2012, 07:04:16 pm
It is quite obvious,
Firstly no-one would be forced to include your location.
Secondly, if you are asking a question about suppliers it does help to know which continent you are on!!
I know some members won't answer questions without the op having a location as they have been caught before answering a question fully then finding out that all the answers are useless as the questioner does not have access to the suppliers due to location.

The word can was used. I dont read it as told. Yes if you dont wish to put your location its up to you. I wish my lake was as near as yours as it would help my testing. John

Have the members that won't answer the questions heard of online ordering?

It seems to me that everytime a suggestion like this asked the same people suddenly start shouting their heads off over something rather trival as your rough location in the world.  For example to say that you would leave forum over this seems to be (my opinion) to be silly, surely if you don't agree with putting your location don't do it, don't moan about it, the adminstrators won't force you do something you don't want to do, it was just a suggestion!  After all I know that a least one of you has in the past put his location on this forum for all to see, and for whatever reason he does not want to put it back on thats up to him but as I was told as a child, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
After all we are here for one thng and one thing only- model boats. :-))

Yes I thought that would be an answer.
One question was from Australia and the freight charges from UK was extremely expensive as the suppliers suggested were UK based.
The question raised was do I HAVE to include my location, I have answered that the answer is simply NO.
But a reasoned explanation was given why it helps and helps others to help any questions.

I don't see anything in Ken's post that says you MUST put your location in your profile. Some people don't read posts thoroughly before replying, but jump in boots and all. I would have thought that the reasons for indicating your location were glaringly obvious, so I'm not going to repeat them but, at the end of the day the choice is yours - membership of Mayhem is not dependent upon you stating your location. I have always had a fairly precise location in my profile and, after 6 years no one has come knocking on my door as a result.

Hi Guys

There is an I.T way around the debate that should suit most people.
At initial registration the field is mandatory................ so the box is always filled.
After initial registration the box can immediately be hidden by visiting your profile.

The vast majority of people will just leave it visible, but those members in a witness
protection scheme / being stalked / a Troll / or just very private people can hide the
box with ease.

My own view is that stating a county, or NE England, S Wales can surely do no harm.

Thank you for all your interest.
There has been a surge of updating, so thank you for registering these helpful details.

Just to clarify a few things

Do not indicate your street or house, email addresses, telephone numbers.

It is OK if you don't want to let folks know where you are.

It's just a request to help things go better for the club members.

Just had a couple of replies to my "smiths Docks" series. One from an ex-apprentice there. Neither showed a location.
This is really not a nice way to go about things. Talking to people who are perhaps real, or just ephemeral is not a good way to conduct any sort of conversation.
Make "Location" a requirement for posting. BY.

Perhaps it can be listed and a consensus taken  :-)) :-))
Title: Re: LOCATIONS IN YOUR PROFILES

Speaking personally, I can't understand why anyone would not want their general location known but, there is no Mayhem requirement for them to do so. It is suggested that members give an indication of their location, but it's a personal choice and I don't believe any more needs to be said on the subject.

Peter.

Topic tidied up.

Ah! the old Mayhem short fuse effect , still alive and kicking!

Locations are not compulsory, just handy, especially if you are buying or selling something through Mayhem.   :-)

It's nice if you would put a location in your profile, nothing specific, just your general area.

Of course you may not wish to, if;

a. You're on the run from Peruvian villains,
b. You own alimony.
c. you have a space disease.
d. You are Lord Lucan or Robert Maxwell.
e. The tax man is closing in.

... lots of reasons I guess...

NB. I Know where you live anyway, I can track you via GPS!!  :P

Just checked my fridge and my location is Kilkenny, Stratopramen, Dr. Pepper, Asti, Pepsi, Weiss beer and som non-alcoholic beers from Germany.

Just kidding if any one should be so lucky to pop by Vemmedrup Danmark (check Google maps for location) I would be happy to serve a drink for you :-)

Location could be country, city, general area or even continent in general it only makes it easier to help when people ask questions.

I have changed my profile to inlude my location, town, state and country, because I realized that 99% of the folks on the site would not know where I live.

I had a kind offer from a member to post something to me but I realized that he did not know I live 'Down Under' and I cannot expect him to post from the UK.

The genorosity of members on here is amazing. The only other community I have also experienced such genorosity
in is amongst collectors of old scooters. My advice is to accept a kindness but to make sure you help others whenever
you can.

I'm already considering that drink with Carsten (Tica above) in Vemmedrup Danmark  - surely there must be some Heinkel

I'm a newby here and I put mine up before my first post(http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy262/rhode-island-red/A%20few%20Smilies/Thumbsup.gif) and I must say that I had I think 3 replies from folk 6 or 7 miles away, also several others within and easy distance, that's is why I'm here to meet like minded people online and local to me (http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy262/rhode-island-red/A%20few%20Smilies/tipmehat.gif)

It's SCOUSER no W.

I can improve your Scouse impersonations anyway Dave. Talk faster than is necessary, then if you learn the breathing technique for the didgeridoo, you can move right into the next sentence without allowing the 'Woolyback' any chance to reply. Also follow the German naming methods of making very long words like unterwasserboot - yernoworrameanlike? Oh - please drop the la.

My mother wanted to give me a good start in life, a better education and spelling and diction than hers. She said she signed me up for elocution lessons   O0 didn't half hurt   :o  :o  :o

The idea is put your location  (or near enough to prevent unwanted nere to do's)  into your profile, to gather local friends at the lakeside,  or Pub if it's raining and to assist with local purchases and meetings of local Boat clubs.

                                                %)

I'm rather getting a bit fed up with the anti social feelings this causes, so I'm not going to persue it any more.

It's up to you from now on.

Hey Dave

If you could put your location up our Ken will smile and the sun will come out again  :}

It's nice to have a rough idea where people are - that's exactly how Peter (HS93) became a great friend. I saw he lived fairly local and asked if he could spare an hour to explain where I was going wrong. Two years later he was still telling me  {-)  %)

My Profile Location has two purposes:
1)  The give model boat enthusiasts the impression I am somewhere in Berkshire.
2)  To encourage HMRC to believe I am currently in voluntary tax exile in Ontario Canada.

All right me hearties. Greetings form a far away land. You prolly drink something every morning that grows around here. Not milk / porridge, I haven't seen a milk / porridge tree around here. {-) Then again, you don't really DRINK porridge, do you?

I stay in Assam, India - where most of the tea grows. Your morning cuppa cheer is grown, blended and packed right here. Oh my goodness,  you are the Chinese Oolong drinker? My apologies.  <*<

Come over sometime, its a beautiful place.

You Scots aren't advised, as you'll be homesick in no time at all.

P.s.  Sorry to burst your bubble, we all don't speak like, "Hallo Saar, happy to be hear and respecting you always. Why is it that everyone in India, thinks that everyone in the United Kingdom, thinks that everyone speaks like that in India?  {:-{
