Title: Springer Crane
Post by: goBulawayo on August 13, 2013, 11:00:44 am
I was given a springer hull with crane superstructure on the weekend, no running gear but I have a Graupner 900 that I am going to fit into it - The crane may have to go as I am told it pulls the boat over when turned to the side (crane turns through 360 degrees and hook winds in and out, extension and lift has to be done by hand) -

If you wanted to retain the crane (?) what about adding flat plate "Wings" to either side of the hull? Same width as retracted crane jib, below surface and painted a dark colour to "Hide" them?

Hi Ian, not sure that would work, even retracted the jib extends about 25cm out from the side of the hull. I had thought about a long keel like yachts have? Or adding a bit of weight to the crane at the back of the jib, where the real crane would have concrete weights, might help a bit

Worth trying with a flat plate and a rubber band before any "Commitment" to glue etc.

ah good idea, I have some 2mm plastic card somewhere that should do. Need to buy a replacement motor for the crane windlass first as the old one has given up the ghost and I am waiting for a 360 degree servo too. Plenty of time anyway to sand down the hull and repaint it.

You could also just extend the jib up and over the front..... even then I think it pitch over.....  {:-{

Finish the Springer and make crane-barge to tow, the barge can be any shape or size to suit. A bit more weight reduction by removing the truck cab at the front.

Thanks arrow5, that is something to think about, though I am sure the barge willstill tip over, unless I make it none working of course.

I think the motor and battery weight might stop it from pitching over - Will see once I get going with the rebuild

Not if the barge is 5 times wider than the tug. {-)        Problem with adding a weighted keel or bunging weight onto the back of the crane is the lowering (or increasing) the loading of the hull.   ie. the waterline is getting closer to the deck.

Thanks, something to remember - Re the barge, of course it can be much wider than the tug, actually I am warming to the idea of a barge now!

Thanks Umi, nice pics. I have decided to rebuilt the springer as a tug and I will then sort out a barge for the crane at a later stage - Drawing out a superstructure design this week.

Have you ever seen one of these cranes working, they have outriggers that the driver extends to lift the vehicle of the ground and give better stability  ok2
Sooooo - what about outrigging floatation devices that are extended to increase the stability ;)
(though not sure how big to make them)

Hey warspite......I understand what you mean....however in todays world  :o ...computerised ballasting in floating crane lifting vessels replaces the need for   .....
"outriggers that the driver extends to lift the vehicle of the ground and give better stability"  :-))

I was thinking more for comical effect, being a springer  O0 , if it works then it looks like a good feature, was thinking of those rubber tanks that they uses to keep ships spaced of the jetties  :-)) , a couple of the lids from Lynx cans, the domed type if you know what I mean.

Mmm thanks warspite, also not a bad idea, can be looked at as a second superstructure for the springer

the motor noise in the video is not from the tug
