Title: MY NEW SPRINGER.
Post by: eddiesolo on April 07, 2014, 12:03:58 am
As some of you know I have been spending my time doing vignettes and dio's due to no space to work on my RC boats. But I was very fortunate to come across a springer that a fellow Kirklees Model Boat Club member was selling. I have seen it at our local shows and on the water and just loved it, the member is a very talented maker and I know his work is top quality, also I got to sail it and have a good look. With money very tight I was in two minds but money from Xmas and Birthday (earmarked for bills) was used...my lovely wife told me to stop being silly and to get something that is quality (no faffing) and that I can join in with the guys until I get the other boats up and running...so I did.

So, here is my newest addition to my RC collection:

Certainly looks the part eddie  :-)) ....very tidy......

I have no knowledge of springer type tugs...so just what is the function of the two tensioning devices @ the bow control with those YELLOW [cylinders?] & chains?

The yellow bits are to lift the front gate when running wires over the bow.
The tugger winches tension the lines to the tow..
It's an American towboat which pushes it's tow rather than pulling it.

This one however seems to be an example of a workboat rather than a springer.
albeit it has a springer hull. It also has a Kort nozzle which springers don't.
The original was a truckable towboat that would be trucked to wherever it was needed.

Hi Derek, as Ned, further down has posted, the yellow parts and chains are for lifting the front gate to allow chains/ropes to be attached. Glad you like it, it is very tidy and not too heavy.

You're spot on Ned, it is a hybrid boat, a springer hull but the fittings are kitted out as a workboat: barge pushing with capabilities for filling/emptying etc.

It's a cracking model Si,

I have a springer and I have been thinking along the lines of a workboat.
Saw this one in Brid last year and it started me thinking.
They are all mucky and smelly :-)) :-)) :-)) %%

Cracking piccies Ned,  :-)) I am itching to add some rustyness...but I have decided...or rather the wife has told me...to leave it alone!

I have another springer in the shed, but it is knackered and leaks, that will be spares.

Go on...you know you want to make a smelly rust bucket.

No mate, you're confused, didn't say it was a springer, but don't you think it will look out of character sat in the "Debris" at Arrow gate? :D
