Title: Fishing Trawler Propitious FR927
Post by: kees de mol on April 27, 2014, 12:04:07 pm
Hallo everybody

I allready have build a dutch fishingtrawler but since that's finished I was looking for a new project. On an English site trawlerphotos I started looking for a new ship to build.

http://www.trawlerphotos.co.uk/gallery/ (http://www.trawlerphotos.co.uk/gallery/)

Here I soon found a realy special ship. A ten meter trawler with a very odd shape, I never saw a ship like this before.

Port Registry: FRASERBURGH
Name: PROPITIOUS FR 927
Werf: MACDUFF
Buildyear: 2000
Length: 10 meter
Catagory: Near-shore fishing vessel, Small scale coastal <10m
Fraserburgh Schotland
Main Target Species: PRAWNS (garnalen)
Opvarenden: max 3

Starting the weathering of the hull. I make use of the salt-chip effect. First you give the hull al layer of 'rust' then you wet te hull and sprinkle salt o it. Let the hul with the salt dry and then pray the colour on it. Then you let this dry for a day and then you brush the salt away and the 'rust' will pop out.

The hull is almost finished but thats for later. First I gonna make a start with the superstructure

First I cut a base-plate and I attached it to the hull.

After this I glued strips of styreen to fit some horizontal strips on it. On this I will later glue the deck.

After this I placed the deck.

Here's the start with the wheelhouse. It was very difficult becouse of al the different angles.

The reardeck in it's rough shape

And the sides are glued on.

After this I used al lot of filler and sanding to make all things smooth. It's a little bit strange, just e few words and pics for so much work. But I hope you enjoy watching the pics.

Kind Regards, Kees

Hello,

It's a static model. The model is made of solid mdf.

Kees

I'm glad you cleared that up, I was going to say with that amount of mdf it will float like a brick! It must weigh a ton already. Love the weathering technique, you have that down to a fine art. There are not many boats made that show typical weathering, to my mind they look as though they have just been launched and not had a hard life at sea.

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see more. For more ideas on weathering you might want to take a look at a plastic model site called Armorama, its mostly tanks etc but the weathering section and the diorama section are wonderful to read.

I love to see detailing shots like this Kees........it gives inspiration and ideas to those who "think" they can't detail, but in fact have the knowledge and skills to do so, but just don't know where to begin...........well done...

It's a brilliant thread, with a brilliant build, and an inspiration to all modellers and shows that you don't need to be a brass turner, engineer or master modeller............just patience and the normal every day pieces and plastics/wood that we all have around our workshop.

Well done Kees, and apart from the weathering of the hull (as I like my models looking pristine....but no bad reflections on yourself.............) it has given me impetus to get out in my workshop and get cracking..........been a bit lethargic lately.

cheers, neil. :-)) :-)) :-))

Some more progression on the FR927. The boat has some kind of chimney wich is not a chimney. But it looks cool and you can put some antenna's on it. Also made a life raft.

Very very informative  O0 O0 O0

Obviously the sequence of fabrication is the key to scratch building.

For example applying the "bolts/rivets" to the base plate first.

No doubt it is this sequencing that deters a lot from scratch building.

Looking forward to next instalment O0 O0 O0

For a first attemt to make and paint a figure I am satisfied with the results. On the photo it's not very good to see that I used diverse shades of paint to create some depth on the figure.

But MDF? Ugh, I hate that stuff. It's just chemical gloop and wood fragments squeezed together in some nightmare amalgam of pure yuck. It's horrible.

I think there is no need to hate MDF. That's wath they said about plastic a couple of years ago.

Just to make sure: This model will be a static model

   Hi all,

Due to holidays and other cases, the work on the trawler for a while stood still, but that has now changed. Still several issues had to be made on the deck. I'm not sure what to call everything, but it is mainly rolls where the fishing lines come out and where the lines are led back. A railing with control for winch and three hatches and a winch made.
After this I must still make the railing and some small things and then the building is almost finished and it needs to be painted only.

In the pictures I show only the new stuff so you can see what's new.

The beginning of a winch

And then you get this

And here the new new dekfittings. I have no pictures of the building but trust me. It was not without any problems to find Proper shapes and sizes

And yes the chains are a bit too thick. For this, I am looking for a smaller one.

Hello people

Today continued with the factory of the bulwark. The legs must be made and aligned and that was lots of work. I have glued the feet  to the deck with a mould  (after I had measured out where to stand, of course) and then the horizontal pipes fitted.
Because Cyanoacrylaat-glue adheres poorly on brass I have every bonding later touched with a bit of epoxy glue.

It looks nice, and things are properly aligned.  The building is now ready apart from some minor things, and so we can start painting.

keep MDF away from water whatever you use it for.

That's absolutly true. I use it for a static model but would never use it for an rc-model. For my static model model I have no problem with it. My father build his first model with mdf some 15 years ago and it still looks very good.
Hope I didnt offended you, I tried to make a joke.

Now on with the boats. I am currently painting the skipper who will be on the bridge

Kind Regards, Kees

At this moment I've come a little further with the boat. First I build some trawldoors. They are used on the trawlnet as a rudder to keep te net open.

After this I started the paintwork. The first staps are done but it is off coarse not ready yet. The weathering will take a lot of time and work. In this first stap I use the 'saltflake methode'.

The next job was the netroll. I started painting and weathering and after this I placed the net on the roll. Voor netting I use bathsponges wich have nice netting if you cut the string holding them together. I also painted and weathered the trawldoors wich are made from aluminium so no rust this time.

Looks fantastic!
