This is my attempt at building a working model of the type 23 using the centre hull joint for access, there are other ways of modify ing the hull, this is my attempt , I really believe I can do this, you should read Kaptain Bill Thomas, s series of article's on mayhem as he relates his experience of building and sailing submarines.
This a nice kit, the one real problem with it is getting the main hull sections to line up and stay butted up to make a good joint, try dry fitting the hull together, or hold it together with masking tape.
In the end I gave in, that was December, about march I had another go , I had read an article on vac form models and how it was necessary to glue tabs along the inside edges of the model to give the joints strength, this what I did wth the bronco at points along the hull, it helped,.
-
Mine just would not go together, so I gave up with it...put it on the floor and stamped on it. Several times.
Then filed it under B1N...

Mine nearly went the same way richard, here's another view of the plasticard wtc supports. The wtc is 65mm in diameter whitch sits nicely in the lower hull stern section and the aluminum bar in the upper and lower hull, the upper bar also supports the tower, regards pete
-
Now I see what you meant, Pete...very neat solution to the problem.
Rich
-
Thanks richard, you never know, you might want to have another go, and dont mean jumping up and down on it, this view shows how the tower sits , the upper bar is missing the nut and bolt go through the hull the bar then through a plasticard plate in the floor of the tower, regards pete
-
That is very clever Pete...well impressive stuff.
Rich
-
Cheers Richard, in nutshell I've tried to do what robbe did with u47, exept with battery in the wet and used as ballast, screws and nuts on centre joint screws and nuts on the tower and the battery section, so to charge up the battery just drop out the hull section, the rest of the hull need never be taken apart except for wtc maintenance, pete
-
Thanks for posting your Type23 build.
So the only thing that'll hold the front and rear sections together will be the bottom aluminum flat bar?
-
There two flat bar's an upper one which also holds the tower in place and lower one, regards pete
-
Tower mount bolt
-
The more I muck about with this boat the more I realise what a good kit it is and it probably would make a very good dynamic diver not having much freeboard on the surface, which means you dont have to have pumps and bags and stuff, and you're far more likely to get your boat back, well sometimes.
The pic I've posted is of the top of the tower and lower support deck , the periscope has athreaded rod in the lower section of the of the scope, this allows the whole of inner tower deck, schnorkel df loop and other stuff to be removed to get at the tower bolt. Pete

View of main connection screw holding fore and aft sections together, through conning tower hatch, there is another screw through the bar in the keel, pete
-
That is amazing, Pete...how on earth did you work that lot out? Makes me wish I'd waited before I built (or tried to build) mine. <:(
Rich
-
I'm not sure myself richard its weird the stuff that pops into your head while your waiting for scs to turn up, just thought I'd have a look at 505, pete
-
Build so far
-
Get them holes opened up, mate...you know you want to!
Rich
-
Mmmmmm I'm really tempted, back to the bronco, view of main propshaft bearing and the lower cut away access panel, I cut all of the panels out with razor saw, before joining the hull sections and also where possible cut behind the weld lines , so that when the battery holder panel is offered up to the main hull, the joins are not as noticeably, pete
-
Ive found a set of micro drill bits, while strictly is on the telly could do the deck on 505, .........
-
Ha ha...I knew you couldn't resist!!
Rich
-
Hi richard, im in hull marina at the moment just got internet connection, saw the post about the krick its the plastic hull version, and yes im tempted to drill those holes, pete
-
After a brief pause and a check over, the hull with battery in place keeps its rigidity, a view of the hull showing battery cutaway.
Have begun fitting the fiddly bits like the life raft hatch lugs, rungs all very small, or my hands are too big, next rudder rear planes and stabilisers and cams, then ballast and trim test, pete
-
That's looking real good, Pete...keep it coming.
Rich
-
Thanks richard, here's a view of the battery housing under construction, pete
-
Another view of wtc in situ showing battery connections and air connection tube to airbag, regards pete
-
Oops here's the pic
-
Bath trial went ok, stern heavy and low in the water, that can be sorted , started the paint job , two colours , light gray and dark sea gray and no boot topping, with a little weathering
-
Also found a crew, they were part of the italeri biber kit, pete
-
"Captain, you're looking a little pale."
-
"Captain, you're looking a little pale."
Not much chance of sunbathing on this old barge.
High Command turned down the request for a sun bed <:(
Ned
-
I will get round to giving the crew a paint job , promise, pete

Cracking work, Pete...looks really good. Makes me wish I hadn't lost my rag with mine... :embarrassed:
Rich
-
Imagine 5 people standing on that small bridge when the alarm sounds.
-
Yep that would be especially for the captain, thanks for the comments rich, still loads to do paint wise, still got the glazing and two sets of tiny l mean tiny running lights to go in there, pete
-
You must have a very understanding wife/partner..... building on the dining table with a white tablecloth on it <*<
-
I have , two tea towels and a cutting mat, I can be trusted apart from the time I hoovered the cat food up with the dyson, I just hope she doesnt read this post, pete
-
Could have been worse, mate...could have been the cat gone up the hoover :o
Rich
-
More paint, and I keep catching and bending the antenna, should have used brass wire, pete
-
A view of the rear plane assembly, using an electrical connector to join the shaft halves and brass sleeve with a ball joint on one end , the angular bracket in picture holds the wtc in place behind the battery holder, pete

This the u47 tec rack from german ebay, 55 euros, no rods tho, pete
-
The bath test , the boat began to roll over, it was ok last time, I had stood the battery upright which altered the water line cg, once the battery laid flat , much better, the water line isnt quite there but its not bad, next job achievi ng dived trim, mmmmm
-
Stern waterline
-
Love the subtle weathering job, Pete...looks just enough without going over the top.
Rich
-
Thanks richard, diving trial next, attach rudder and stern plane linkages waterproof positive connection on battery and wtc, and well who knows, pete
-
Fingers/hands/arms/legs/knees/eyes all crossed for a successful maiden dive, Pete...
Rich
-
Torpedoes launched this morning , pete
-
Thanks mate...reload will on the way later this morning.
Rich
-
Can't you fit the battery through the hull separation instead of the bottom cutout?
-
I suppose you could, the plan was to never having to open it up , but thats me it , seems a good idea, the aft lower hull is removable to access the charging and on of circuit, once the battery is fitted it shouldn't need removal unless theres a problem, pete
-
Ive just won a u25 , pete
-
The eBay One, Pete?
Rich
-
Yep , cant believe it, pete
-
Pete,
Can you provide a drawing or diagram showing the location of the wtc, battery and air bag?
-
Hi redboat , this is the best l can do, looking at it again maybe I should have sited the wtc higher in the hull which would have allowed for more ballast below and increased its stability, regards pete
-
Perfectly OK. :-))
I see no provisions for controlling your bow planes. So I assume these will fixed.
BTW, Can you post close up photos of the access panels for the stern plane control linkages.
-
This is a view of the lower stern access panel , this pic was taken early on the build , instead of rod for rudder and stern planes , I used short length bowden cable, with bellows the inner cables are also o ringed onto the inner cable , because im using rcabs all seals need to be 100%
You can just make out the back stop for wtc, which has now been drilled to hold the wtc in place, there will also be simple on off and battery charge connection, using a waterproof fuse holder, when get some time I will post pics of its test run, pete
-
Any updates?
-
The boat is about ready to go waiting for a smaller battery , just got a waterproof fuse holder to use as charge socket , on off, will post more pics , pete
-
View of the water proof fuse holder, regards pete
-
Any updates on this build. :((
-
sorry redboat been tied up with end of term assessments and paperwork ,hoping to sail it in the new year, will take some pics, regards pete
-
Ok. Advance Merry Christmas to you.

Keep the build going when you get time as im following it as well
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Any new developments on this build?

Hi unfortunately I lost the boat at our slipway where i test my models,it is in deep water there was a large air bubble Im hoping the wtc wasnt compromised, I have a sub aqua mate on stand by, its wrapped up in the wee. , lets hope, Pete
-
Pete,
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your sub. This past summer, my XXIII also went missing. Still at the bottom of the lake. Sigh.
I hope your friend can find it and bring it back.
Peace,
Tom
-
<:( <:( <:( I hope you recover her soon. Anything to share about the test before you lost her?
-
Pete, I'm so sorry to read your post, mate...been there, done that, so I can sympathise with you. I hope your mate can locate the boat for you and bring her back.
Good luck mate, keep us informed.
-
Hi Richard ,yes I'm annoyed with myself, I'm back there tomorrow taking the dingy out to have a look, Pete
-
Maybe when U-33 has his motorflote complete he can get george have a look for you - i believe the motorflote will submerge at full speed, and with george's flatulance problem, he'll race along the bottom quite quickly till the pusher bars make contact and then surface - when he does you know where the sub is - possibly :}
-
What ever happened to your search and retrieval operation?
-
Sorry to hear about the loss of your sub, and it is easy to be wise after the event, but I never put a sub in the water unless I have put a Pinger on board:
http://www.theassociationofmodelsubmariners.com/t26-pingers-and-hydrophoneso (http://www.theassociationofmodelsubmariners.com/t26-pingers-and-hydrophoneso)
I have to say that after this length of time the Pinger battery would be flat anyway(lasts about a month) and the model will be covered in silt and difficult for a diver to spot (particularly in poor viz)
My sympathy goes with you and sad to say you may have to write this one off.
David
-
Hi thanks for your comments I have been searching using my dingy but as you say its probably got a good covering of silt, the water does drop in the winter, we did lose three gnomes off our mooring, please dont ask! , but i did find them in mud , I could always build another one.
-
Have you contacted your local sub-aqua club to see if they want to search for it?
They'd probably love to do something useful with their dives rather than just blowing bubbles in a gravel pit or swimming pool.
-
Hi yes had a diver friend have a look , visibility was was poor but no joy, regards pete
