Hi all,
New here but into model boats for 40 years, still none the wiser! I'm currently restoring a 6 metre pond yacht built in the 1930s by my grandfather and sailed by my mother when sh was 10 years old, now 85! I'm at the rubbing down stage on the hull and looking for fittings and sails. I have had a quote for sails (cotton ) at £310.00 will a lead time of 8 months😝
I am keeping a blog thing , so fell free to look and if you can help me in my very big challenge.

Welcome to Mayhem. What a gorgeous looking yacht. Have you tried Nylet for your sails & fittings? Their web site is not the easiest to follow but try phoning as they are very helpful.

Thanks Knoby, it was Nylet that quoted for the sails at £310.00 with an 8 month delivery time which is ok, so will go with that, it gives me plenty time to do the hull.

Looking at its age, it not only predates radio, it probably predates vane steering as well, meaning it was probably Braine steered. Is it going to be restored to original, or updated with, say, radio? In practical terms, there are many more places where a radio yacht can be sailed.

Hi, Malcolm, I will be installing radio with a Hitec Winch. I am trying to keep it as original as possible but will be fibre glass clothing ( skinning )the lower hull.

Very nice job you're doing Nellybob. I think the gold stripes really add a touch of class to a fantastic choice of colour, and the deck is superb. Did you buy the lettering for the name, if so how did you manage to exactly match the hull paint? And if not how did you do such a neat job. I look forward to seeing it finished. Well done. U2

Hi,Unsinkable 2, thanks for the kind words. The hull green does not exactly match the green of the name, but a man running for his life wouldn't notice {-)
I got the name transfer from http://www.ebay.ie/itm/281595542896 two names were only £2.49, the postage is free for UK.The transfer is really good quality and easy to apply with full instructions.They only do one size thou which was fine for what I needed.

Hey nellybob I checked out the lettering on ebay, they are available in different sizes you just have to let them know, but get this, only £2-49 for two stickers and £7-50 postage if I wanted them posting to france..... ha ha ha ha {-) If I did want some I would ask my mum to send them as I believe its free post to the uk. They must put them in gold envelopes for Europe....... U2

Hi, Thanks Nemo, you might have noticed from My blog I mentioned My mother ( Grace ) helped her dad sail the yacht in the late 30s,aged 10. As soon as it's sea worthy she will be skippering it again but with RC. She's 85 now and keen to get sailing again. :police:

Hi guys, can anyone help me with the measurements for a standard suit of sails for My yacht , Grace. I have some measurements but Graham Bantock needs more measurements. I just want something that will look period and work well , I won't be racing her.
I know the mast hight, 63 inches and the boom length is 32 inches.
The main luff is 57 inches,the roach is 62 inches ,foot 24 inches the head sail luff is 53 inches leech 49 inches.I do not know how to work out the rest.I have attached a file showing all measurements I need. Does anyone have a vintage 6 metre who can help. :-X

you should get in touch with the Vintage Model Yacht Group http://www.vmyg.org.uk/ (http://www.vmyg.org.uk/) as they will have the knowledge you need.
From looking at the old 6m yachts at Dundee the sail shape is much simpler than you show The leading edge of the sail is straight as they were clipped to a wire at the rear of the mast and tightened with a halyard at the top. The foot of the sail also tended to be straight without any curve.
Ideally you should be getting the new sails made from linen instead of the new sail materials. the new materials are much less porous to the wind and tend to blow over more easily.

You need to look at low aspect sails for that period.
The ones you have shown are the modern High Aspect ratio.
Nylet do a lot of period sails in the right material for the period.

You bet! and skippered by my mother, Grace who sailed "Grace" 75 years ago with her father.My mother now 85, can't wait to sail "Grace" again.

That looks great :-)) I have always wanted a nice sail boat, ever since I was a kid to join all the men at Southampton boating lake, but unfortunately the council built lake is now in a very bad condition.
WE need to restore this lake and use it I am going to contact the Council to see what they can do for us.

You will need a lot of like minded guys to contact the
Council members that they have voted in.
Money is in short supply so the offer to help in
refurbishment will go a long way.
Get the local press involved and radio/tv.
Drag out old photos from the archives with guys
sailing yachts on the lake.
These always look good as the collar, tie, sports jacket
was de rigueur in those days .
Research funding that is available sometimes but not
always advertised.
Keep pushing.

Hi Ned,
Thanks for that support, I know a Councillor in Totton, not to far away, that may be of help, I will push it, I have contacted the Southampton Council this evening to get in touch with me over this.
I really feel this is something we all need to work with, I have some photos of the lake in the early years, and it was very popular then.
This is my happy years on the lake I am 61 now and really feel that it may work with help.

WoW, don't put your boat anywhere near that "water" it will get scratched...... If Lord really did walk on water he probably did it at your pond....... without difficulty :}. I really hope you manage to get something sorted its a sad state of affairs when it gets to that stage. Even here in france in my village there is a local beauty spot with a tiny pond (not really big enough for boating) and the pond is starting to get overgrown with weeds and the green small plants that cover the surface, I think I might see about getting something done about that {-) best of luck. a website to try (possibly,) is "change.org" groups of people get together online and file petitions, some very successfully..... It is a sad fact that a lot of councils are handing over lakes and ponds to "Community Trusts" that want to turn them over to nature ponds. I'm not against nature, I have a nature pond in my garden but this is just an excuse to save money. Tayport pond, where grace was sailed in the 30's and 40's is now a nature pond, full of weeds and frogs. :((

I think we need to, ALL OF US! get onto the councils and let them know, that we need recreation for all, and not just play areas, marked out so the little ones don't get hurt, and let them learn about all the great things that a hobby has to offer, in the way of getting together and having a very nice time and a great day out at week ends.
We have 2 very good boating lakes in Southampton, not used !! and it makes me feel Angry that there have been many things dreamed up by the council costing Hundreds of Thousands to implement, like a monorail, laser lights from the Civic Center tower that never happend.
So why not an already used for years lake for our hobby and interest.
My Guess is PROFIT FOR THE SHARE HOLDERS.
