Hi everyone
Bit of a difficult one for us...
Does anyone know what the ship's crest for HMS Prince George (Majestic class Predreadnought) looks like?
Internet search reveals nothing but she must have had one.
Thanks in advance.

Ours, HMAS, are all listed on official RAN website.
Suspect the RN would be likewise.

Hi,
Might be worth contacting the Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth they will surely find the one applicable to date.
Interesting history to this vessel!

Rich

Thanks guys
I will contact them to see what they have on the subject as there appears to be very little internet wise on Prince George's crest.

I've trawled around for hours but not been able to find this ship's crest - possible it did not have one ? - these images show tampions fitted but don't appear to be "crested". The photo of the marines cutter racing team appears to have some sort of device at the top of the lifebelt but it's difficult to make out. http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_prince_george.htm
I'll try the local library sometime this week - clutching at straws now though. :((
Regards,
Ray.

Hi Ray
Many thanks for the help, judging by the pictures on the link they could be the standard type of tampions used when at sea, the crested versions were fitted in harbour probaby during important visits. In my Prince George build thread I found out that after 1917 they were all changed to one standard type of tampion. I'm beginning to suspect that the crest was "G.R." -The then Prince George's initials before he became King George V.
I've contacted the RN archive library at Portsmouth but the automatic reply said that it could take up to a month for a proper response.

In a quick trawl around I got the impression from one source that crests are quite a recent innovation - possibly only 100 years ago - so this ship may simply not have had one.

According to Wikipedia (not the most accurate I know!) the Royal Navy introduced crests to their ships in the 1850s due the extravagant money being spent on figureheads and allow sailors to find the ships in the dark (probably when they are drunk :D ). It was a haphazard method of designing crests being left to the ship's officers to come up with. Due to the strange and wonderful schemes devised by some ship's officers they became standardised in 1917 by the ship's crest committee who then designed them. In 1940 the crests all became circular due to war time shortages. I've found crests for Majestic and Mars both sister ship's of Prince George and they both had them from that period, so I was kind of guessing that Prince George had one too, if not so spectacularly compared to earlier vessels.

I think I can just make out the main gun tampions (barrel/bore covers) have been fitted on some of the pics I have seen of Prince George
So hopefully yes.
-
the imperial war museum have on record that they have them - http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30004191, maybe an enquiry there would help.

how about this? http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205260964

Now that's interesting, it looks like a royal rose similar to the Queen Elizabeth battleship and more recently the aircraft carrier crest.
Many thanks Grendel, I'll have a go at making one in 1/96 scale and see how it turns out.

I'm beginning to suspect that the crest was "G.R." -The then Prince George's initials before he became King George V.
G.R. would stand for George Rex (as he was king by then), his name was George Frederick Ernest Albert.

Hi Lance
Yes I should have realised that :embarrassed:

Just a suggestion: A while back I wanted a 5mm ships crest on the bridge of my HMS Amazon.
I first found a real good definition image of it, and scaled it down to size.
ie: Do not try to reduce the size of the pixel image (eg JPG), or you will only get reduced pixels and no detail.
I used a desktop publisher program to copy/paste the image into, then picked up one corner to resize it. All the detail stays intact as it gets smaller. Make several identical copies next to each other.
In my case I used Microsoft Publisher. Once reduced to the right size print off a set on decal paper or gloss photo paper, cut out and fit, then protect with matt or semi gloss varnish.
