Hi all,
I'm looking for advice on motor, battery, esc and prop size for my Aero Naut Jenny build. I'd like it to have plenty of get up and go when needed but not silly fast and with a reasonable run time. Has anyone built this kit or something similar? She is based on a 1930's gentlemans racer and 730mm in length.
Many thanks, Dale

To answer your question something like the setup this guys running would work well hes using Turnigy 540 L inrunner 1350 KV ,120 amp esc on 3 s.

This motor is on at a good price at the moment and while its got more than enough power and is rated upto 6s if you run it on 3 s i think it should work well and be fast too.
3 s would work out around 15 k rpm so well within its limits and around 20 mph depending on what prop you use,but this motor would be capable of swinging most props :} .

Hi martno1fan,
thanks for the reply and info and links. I do like the blue hull combination (video) and it's certainly got some get up and go :-))
I was hoping to avoid water cooling if possible as this is my first build of this type of sports boat and have never installed that type of motor. Much to learn and think about.
-
Water cooling isn't a big deal and i would think preferred in this boat as theres not a lot of room so things would get hot quite quickly and i don't think having air getting in would be a good idea in case the boat flips over so an outrunner wouldn't be my choice in this hull.
You can make some water scoops under the hull using brass tubing or you can buy them, they just go underneath and catch the water as the boat moves and they work really well.
-
By the way you wouldnt need a 120 amp esc as he used you could probably get away with a 60 amp but seeing as the 90 amp escs are so cheap id go with that, you would however need to reduce the reverse input some if it has reverse with the brushless motor or you could swamp the boat when hitting reverse O0 .37-40 mm prop should work .
-
Thanks again martno1fan,
looks like water cooled is the way to go then, appreciate all the advice and it will be taken on board (pun intended) :-)
Do you think the ESC needs to be water cooled as well or is that OTT?
Cheers, Dale
-
I would use a water cooled esc theyre cheap as chips nowadays, you could probably get away with cooling both from one pickup either in one then out into the other or split the water via a plastic y splitter .I use the ones used for aquariums they work great .I use int diam 4 mm silicone hose.
these are the pickups i use .

Hi Daleb
The 3660-1700kv motor is to powerful for that size boat!!!!
I have started a SG&K but it's 850mm, motor 3639-1100kv, 60 Amp ESC, 3S 3700mah Lipo and a 3 blade 37mm prop.
I am running the same setup in a 850mm Sea Commander cabin cruise but with a 2 blade 40mm prop.
Very good turn of speed about 35 kph.
-
Hi canabus,
thanks for your reply and I'll take a look at the set up you've suggested :-))

The motor isnt too powerful if he runs it on 3 s :D ,reason i suggested it is it can swing a decent sized prop with ease and its on at an unbelievable price. To me its a good choice i just bought one for a similar project i have in mind in the summer .this ones £31 completely water cooled to me its a bargain and yes is powerful on 6s but on 3 s its gonna be more than fine. I dont like small outrunner motors in small confined spaces personally . Anyway ill leave it to you as you always seem to be the expert so count me out im done .

Well, as a relative newby to RC boats, this post didn't start too well, I was just looking for some advice hey ho...I was going to do a build log as I could do with help and guidance from you experienced guys but I'm not sure now.... I would of course expect and welcome criticism and maybe some well needed encouragement..... admin, should I start a new post or continue here?
Looks good keep them pictures coming. :-)) ken

Hi martno1fan,
I think you may have misunderstood my last post, I was trying to say that it was a shame that you and canabus seemed to fall out over it and I'm sorry for that and it put me off continuing with a build log.
I thank you again for all your help and advice which I'm very grateful for. I have purchased that motor and appropriate ESC plus all items for water cooling.

I have decided to test run a couple of set ups in another s/h boat I've bought first as the Jenny will not be easy to swap about once installed.
Thanks Dale. :-))

Don't be put off and if anything i said did that then i apologise to you and Canabus . Sometimes what we say comes across wrong on the page thats my excuse and im sticking to it lol .
Good luck with it,one things for sure that motor will be working well within itself on 3 s,should be a good running boat once done. Looks good so far :-))

I have a colleague at work who is also making this kit.
He asked me about what motor etc to put in it as he is still new to the hobby a d was going by what the manufacturer said and is having difficulties. I am not much help as all my stuff is slow or tugs, fast things I have now experience of.
He would rather go for something brushed and prefers it to run off of NHMhs which he has shed loads of rather than Li Po's. Oh and being a dockie he wants it cheap, as cheap as possible!
-
Hi,
I'm not sure I can be much help either but I did speak to Cornwall Model boats (who supplied the kit) and as a brushed set up they suggested....
JP Pro Power 600 motor
Mtronics Viper Marine 15 speed controller
8.4v 3800 NiMh Energ-Pro Battery pack
Maybe some one with more experience can shed more light on this...
Dale.

-
Hi Martin,
It's a CNC one piece supplied in the kit all I had to do was put the finish on i. The deck and engine hatch are the same but must be honest and say I was surprised it wasn't just plane mahogany sheet as it's the cockpit floor and when built up with seats etc. can hardly be seen. Nice touch by Aero-Naut. I must say that I've been very pleased with the quality of all the timber in the kit.
Dale.

Cockpit not finished but getting there, takes so long with the drying times between coats of yacht varnish...but hopefully worth the effort

Looks good mate, tip for you when glassing if you flip boat upside down and sit her on something you can drape the cloth over her in one piece if you get thin enough cloth, yours looks ok and i think it might have gone on in one. What i used to do is do transom first let dry then trim then do bottom and sides in one then trim off at transom and deck job done.
-
Good tip!! I did read about it being done as you describe but wasn't brave enough to have a go as first attempt lol...maybe on the next one... :-))
I did the bottom in one piece then the sides separately followed by transom... so a long winded way about it...
Cheers
Dale.
-
Yea so long as you use a nice cloth like a twill weave it will then form round the contours just fine even at the bow,all you need to do is have a practice by laying the cloth on dry and test it ,you will see how easy it works :} then do it for real .
-
After glassing the hull I applied two coats of Z poxy resin then left it to dry and settle for around a week/ten days. Flatted back, masked up the mahogany and fired a couple of coats of Halfords primer/filler....

Final pics are where I am at today, not perfect but going to leave like this for now and final fit motor mount, prop shaft in place and make watertight (have trial fitted it all before) and then continue with bottom hull finishing and the many coats of yacht varnish to the mahogany....so you may not hear from me for a while :}
-
Looks great nice job :-)) .
-
Not much to report but still varnishing the hull, I'm leaving it 4/5 days to harden between coats and then light rub down and go again, it's frustratingly slow but hope it pays off.

Hi all,
I am installing a water cooled set up at the moment and would like to hear your thoughts on where to position the intake pipe. I have mocked it up as in the photo but nothing is glued yet so can be moved.
Thanks
Dale.

Hi Dale,
While having the inlet as deep as in your picture, you'll have a lot of water through your tubing (make sure the pressure won't blow them from your nipples), a speeding fountain might be the result..., it'll also add a lot of drag, slowing you down.
As the hole is already there, I suggest you raise the tube so only the slanted section peeks out, in combination with the propwash this should provide ample flow with the least amount of drag.
Tip: bend the tube inside the boat so the height the water has to rise before going to the ESC and motor is as little as possible, and you'll still have flow when you're crawling along.
If you want to be sure to have flow under all circumstances, put the outlet in the bottom to, but slanted towards the rear, creating suction when the boat moves.
I have this pressureless system in my fast electrics and in my scale boats, works like a charm.
I added two picture of the inlet and outlet on my 110 cm M.A.S., notice there's virtually nothing sticking out from under the hull.
Regards, Jan.

Hi Jan,
Thank you for your reply, great info, just what I was after as this is a first for me with water cooling.
Thanks again
Dale.
