I keep on getting e-mails pretending to come from HMRC  telling me I am due for a tax rebate and asking me to log on so that they can transfer the money to my account. I wonder if they ever contemplate why I just zap them . Got another one yesterday

Having a hotmail.com email address, I get similar ones from the USofA.  Fortunately, Thunderbird is quite adept at slinging them straight into the junk box.
And no, they don't ever wonder, it doesn't cost them anything to annoy you, so they just keep sending.  There is a theory that the illiteracy level is aimed at those who will respond and are unlikely to realize that there is a scam involved until it is far too late.  If only one in a hundred thousand is a mug, the scam has paid its dividend.
I wonder who Nigerian Princes robbed before the internet?

They probably kept local and robbed other Nigerian Princes.

As stupid as it sounds, the authorities tell us that literally thousands fall for these schemes daily. :o :o :o

The main reason is, the recipient thinks they can outsmart the stupid spammer/con artist, as evidenced by poor grammar spelling etc, which are all part of the ploy so don't get too cocky but stay alert.

Sometimes it is only to confirm your email address??

I wonder exactly that.  Who and why does anyone ever fall for these things and what did these guys do for a living before the t'interweb!
That said the real tax man can be just as annoying.  Every year for about 10 years I got a letter from Inland Revenue along the lines of " We find that we have no record of your present address!"  Seriously?
