Title: Sticky surface from grp
Post by: Brian60 on September 01, 2017, 12:21:56 pm
I had an accident earlier in the week, I was mixing up some polyester resin only a small amount. I had it measured (300ml) in a jam jar, then I went to my squeezy bottle of hardener to add the required number of drops. As I squeezed the top popped out and half a bottle of hardener sloshed into the resin.

I poured off as much of the hardener as I could and mixed up what I had in the jar. Now I know I should have discarded it, but it was to finish off a small job where I had not mixed up quite enough resin, so went with it. As its not load bearing or in danger of shearing I wasn't too concerned.

Now 3 days later the cloth and resin has set up, but its left the surface tacky and sticky to the touch, is there any way of getting rid of the stickiness?

I'm about to rub some talcum powder into it, but failing that maybe a wipe over with a cloth and acetone?

Any options you can offer please?

In the past I have wiped it down with acetone, and also had to scrape the bad mix down to solid.  {:-{
I also used to use a surfboard/laminating resin, which would stay tacky till you added wax to the mix.
The wax would float to the surface, and seal the surface, preventing air contact, and the resin would cure hard.

However, since you are spot finishing, it may be the acetone or scraping that is required.

Hi,

I have used a sealant over the top called epiglass I think, might be worth a try.

The talcum powder has mostly worked. I think I'll give it a wipe with acetone let it dry another week and then probably go over it with another layer of resin and tissue to seal it all in.

If the resin is not waxed it will have surface stickiness, so the next application/laminate will get a better  bond. nemesis

Possibly a build up of styrene give it a wipe with acetone  :-))

use "Flo-Coat" resin. that is what is used to finish of a laminate. nemesis
