Before we all jump on board, just how suitable is Llanberis for the variety of models we saw at Mayhem this year? Blackheath might find it a bit difficult to lay on a straight running demo and if Tug Kenny's Red Pelican does a repeat act it might be difficult to get it back even if it did go down with all lights blazing. I think there are a number of people who would think twice about putting their boat on a water that's over 100 feet deep and prone to rough conditions even if you hairy chested Welshmen think nothing of it.

Lyn Gwynant and Afon Gwynant would be a far better place to hold a regatta of this sort.

Any venue needs to be suitable for the range of Mayhem activities we saw at Wicksteed. Previous posts suggest that Llanberis could be a bit hostile on a bad day and we don't all want to troop down/up to Wales and find that we can't run. Also, how do you lay out a course on a 100 foot deep lake?

I'm more than happy to trek to Wales but the venue needs to be flexible enough to cope with Mayhem requirements. And that includes being able to wade out and keep your head above water!

For the barbie or just for wrapping round you to keep warm? (Yes I know there can be other uses but you might catch Foot & Mouth!)

At Llanberis (Lyn Padarn) the lake IS big and deep but that is not the whole story. There is an area of the lake, close to where we sail,  flanked by a low wall and footpath and backed by a mown grass area,  which is wading depth out for about 15 yards. Quite suitable for laying a steering course.

Whilst the waves on the main lake  can get high, it is unusual for this to be any real problem for most models. If conditions do get really wild there are several sheltered "lagoons" (see attached photo) which can be used.

However it must be said that the water level can get higher overnight after heavy rain (not infrequent in North Wales  :'()  which can sometimes affect things - it never stops model sailing though O0

I have walked along these lagoons many times.
Lots of lagoons, of different sizes, so you could have different themeed areas.

Also car parking and toilets.

Is there a slipway as well? Or is my memory playing tricks.

And from the lagoons you can sail off into the big lake if you want.
Also you are away from the main touristy bit of Llanberis.

Is there a campsite near Llanberis??

I will be back in Wales in the late summer. So I could attend then.

below is a link to an arial shot of the lagoon area.

Right been to the Lake today and there is a slight change of plan so to speak at the moment I am in negotiation with Pa darn Country park which is located on the opp side to where we normally sail from but has 2 very sheltered lagoons which does not suffer from kids and canoes etc.One lagoon could ho;d a steering course v easily and is only 2ft deep(ideal for tug Kenny!!!) the other is I would say over 5ft deep easy shore access all round both lagoons and access for the more adventurous of you who wan to sail in a PROPER !!! Lake.Hopefully Robert Davies will post some piccies as me forgot camera silly me.More details will be posted as soon as I know them.Car parking is no problem at all 20ft away from the lake,as for the wifes and girlfriends 100yds away there is craft shops and the slate museum which is free admission. At teh moment a £2 parking fee applies but if I can get this waived and still charge £2 £1 will go to the RNLI and the other to the museum that is what I am proposing.Hopefully htey will agree to this and we can then be seen to do somethign worthwhile.

Subject to permission the preferred option for the 'do' is pictured below:

It consists of three parts:

Lagoon 1 General sailing (5ish foot deep)

Part two lagoon 2 (2 - 3 feet deep suitable for steering courses etc)

Part three the lake proper (Quite deep...)

It's got to be done!!!!

Campsite would be usefull.

You could market this as "EXTREME MAYHEMING" or "HARDCORE"

I am sure it would not detract from the meeting in May.

Hi Stavros,

Great work, lake looks great.
Do you have any links to the park / lake?

What sort of dates are YOU thinking of Stav?
What clubs can we get to support it?

Thats an excellent aerial photo at the link provided by Martin.  Note - Lyn Padarn is the larger of the two lakes shown.  (The other, Lyn Peris can be seen to have VERY steep banks and is unuseable)
The Padarn Country Park complex is at the right hand upper part of the lake and the two "lagoons" can be clearly seen. ( We normally sail from the other side of the lake at the green area next to the place with a white footpath alongside the water. From there we can go all the way along to the right and up the stream clearly shown. That end of the lake is also accessible from the Country Park area.)

Its North Wales.  In the mountains.  By a reservoir.  Rain is what they fill the reservoirs up with.  Take a big sou'wester.  Enjoy.

Right an update havign spoken to the relevant authorities they have said no problem Whit the event being run at the country park, they are keen to have us there.local clubs have Been contacted and I am waiting for them to reply etc. Campsites and B+B will shortly be given Robert Davies is goign to sort that out for me so bear with us on this one as it is early days!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right there will be some simple rules to be observed but nothing heavy as it is a FUN FUN FUN AND EVEN MORE FUN WEEKEND,well it has got to be with me in charge yes I will be the one causing MAYHEM that weekend.

Rules
1 Ins MUST BE  shown to the organisers
2 No IC on the lake at all as it is  SSI
3 Frequency controll will be adhered to
4 If I say NO to anything well NO is NO(unless of course cash is involved then It might be yes ;))

And that is it on rules unless I think of anything else of course

The weekend as far as I acn see will be a FUN one with me PREFERABLY not having a nervous breakdown.
Steering course in the shallowest of the 2 lagoons and tug towing
Springer races and football
Free sailing in the furthest lagoon
Free sailing in the main lake

An evening sail organised by Ghost on the otherside of the lake in the lagoons(contact him not me,his idea,he volunteered)

There is plenty to do for the wife's,girlfriend etc within 10 miles of LLanberis either shopping in Caernarfon or Bangor and LLandudno is only 20 miles away. So come on lets have some fun in Norht Wales, alas the only thing I cant arrange is the weather but who can.

Quote
The member / family named overleaf is a fully paid up member/family of the PMBC and is covered by Third Party Liability Insurance and is permitted to operate radio-controlled model boats of a type allowed at approved waters to current rules in force.
.

as for covering all eventualities stavros, i think you may need to hire a submarine and deep sea diving unit to retrieve the red pelican! :P

Great job you are doing there Stavros. Just a pity I can't make it from France this time.

I used to live in Chester and know the lake well, so beautiful. One of my all time favoured walking places. I even used the mountain huts with 50 sweaty and well drunk climbers!

Have a great event.

Just to whet your appetite some more this is where the event will take place

http://www.star-attractions.co.uk/attractions/gwynedd/padarn/padarn.htm

There is plenty for the wives and girlfriends and kids to do,Llanberis is only litterally a five minute walk away with craft shops and loads of cafe's including the world famous Pete's eats. You can go up Snowdon by train, you can go underground to see Electric mountain. If The wives want to go shopping well Caernarfon is 5miles away,Bangor10,and LLandudno 20miles.There is plenty to do for the whole family at Padarn park and the best thing about it is it's FREE.Yes Free admission to the slate museum, free admission to the Old Hospital which has been done up exactly as it would have been in the 1900's.There is a Miniature railway that runs along the length of the lake and also a pleasure boat that takes you for a cruise along the lake ,need I say more, some piccies to wet your appetite.
Views looking back at LLanberis from the venue and the train that goes along the lake shore.

All agreed GOOD boy that lot seems like a good idea me thinks me is going to be busy!!!!!

Having spoken today to the lads at Padarn Park they are more than agreeable to have us there and have been so far very helpfull towards our needs so lets make it a good one.One thing I am afraid I have not been able to waiver is the car parkign charge which will be £3 sorry about that but hey what the heck we will have a good time.
A limited disabled parking will be available at the lake side but you will be able to drop off your boats off and I will also provide a trolley of some sort.
Ins will have to be checked prior to sailing sorry but it is a stipulation of the land owner
Ic Boats WILL BE ALLOWED on the main lake so MAKRA boys come on down

OK Stavros you seemed to have missed the straightrunning (forwards or backwards-----hummmm)
are you ready for the fast steam one ? (which runs forwards--please note Mark)
Tried my scale ship at the last straight running regatta, and for a laugh (well if Mark could do it at Wicksteed) ran it backwards-------b***er me if it didn't go and score----You might be onto something here Mark
Will we be B-B-Q tables Saturday night ?

This morning, in wet and windy Basingstoke, several yachts were blown over in the gusting conditions.  Of these one sank but was recovered because of the shallowness of our pond.

Banjo As another form of recovery i have a diver standing by just in case. The Lagoons you are sailing in are only around 5ft deep, the recovery boat is for this and if anyones model gets into trouble on the main lake which incidentally is 160ft deep 100yds down to the right of the lagoons. As some of the Makara club and hopefully the OMRA boys are coming down judging by piccies of their racing exploits I think it is only right I have a rescue boat don't you

Ah ha Stav ha sa Master plan me gone out and bought an electric Mota so no rowing for me I HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right then Stavros and Martin have come up with a Master plan for the LLanberis event we are going to have a sort of CLUB 500 Thingy Race.Reason for club 500 thingy is quite simple it is OPEN to ANY Electric model with a 500 spec motor so that includes springers, now me being me, of course will come up with a cunning plan and will think of some canaiving way to handicap the faster boats so to TRY TRY TRY and get a level playing field, lord only knows what that will be.The committe is out on that one allready.

OH AND BY THE WAY THE ORGANISER IS ALLOWED TO CHEAT   HE HE

Here
If you can't use "petrol power" My Makara runs on petrol????????
OK so if I am aloud to run has anyone settled down on what camp site is going to be used. It would be ideal if it was by a pub. Any clues would be welcome.
I am trying to bang the drum but so far it looks like me & maybe blagmister at this stage.
A rescue boat is a must for us chaps. Can you row a 30mph ??? No Oh well best make sure my boat stays on top of the water.

If I can be bold and jump in here.

It may be an idea to try and book accomodation/campsites soonest, if you have not already done so.

I read that many people will not holiday overseas this year, but stay at home. Coz of the economy. And this is a bank hol weekend.

So as the man from Pontin's used to say "Book early"

I have recieved a couple of PM's regarding camping over night at the venue, sorry this is a BIG NO NO

I am allowed 2 Caravans at the venue over night for one reason alone SECURITY and the 4 persons who are sleeping in them are taking it in turns to watch the Gazeebo's etc and before anyone bothers to Pm me to volounteer sorry the answer will be NO Jobs allready allocated.
It is strictly no sleeping in the cars overnight at the venue also There are plenty of campsites and B&B's locally, see seperate thread for tel no's etc

30 days to go and counting to my nervous breakdown,31 for the second and 32 to be committed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right seriously though for one minute is there anything that anyone can suggest in the way of on water activities that would go down well.EXCEPT THROWING ME IN OR ANY DAFT IDEAS LIKE THAT.I know what you lot are like!!!!!!!!!!

one suggestion so far is a night sail BUT this is not possible at the venue due to the gates being locked at 8pm,BUT Ghost has so kindly volunteered to do this on the opp side of the lake at the Lagoons.

So far what I have proposed timing to be confirmed are as follows

Springer RUGBY
Mayhem 500 racing including springers as a max motor size of 500 is used
Tug Towing Sd14 st George is coming down at 14feet should be good fun
Steering course
Club 500 races ????
Straight Running demo by Steam boat Phil and in No Mustang at the moment marks case battelship reversing manoeuvre's ;)
OMRA?MAKRA demo runs on the main Lake
Free sailing ONLY FOR THE BRAVE on the main lake
Same type vessel parades
Lets see how far we can throw Martin and if he Floats competition
Tow Stavros around the Main lake lest see Ghost if your Southampton can do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bet it can't

There will hopefully be some traders in ATTENDANCE DON'T EXACTLY KNOW WHO YET Wait and see
And yes they will be selling their wares

Free Tea and Coffee, and soft drinks courtesy of STEAM BOAT PHIL,don't forget to thank him.

Mark don't upset Phil with your backwards straight running he will only sulk and we need him again

Now what do you lot want I really suppose that I am asking for trouble asking this but suggestions please.
And yes i have ordered some fine weather

Do we have any banners signs that can be attached to lamp posts and the like in the village? A3 on hard board attached by wire.
Could do the car parks.

This may generate some interests from tourists and locals, and may boost membership of boat clubs locally.

hi there i do not mean to be a kill joy. BUT check with the local council + highways dept . My local model rail way club has a show once a year and we can but signs . The fine is up to £2000 per sign. The only signs you can get are AA or RAC and they ant cheep. I am say this as i don't want any one to get a fine. Personally i think there a great idea.

Fire pestilence and flood permitting we will be there though I have a slightly bigger hurdle that we may not be there and thats the imminent arrival of a new baby (I'd better be there for that) but if we can we will be in attendance though we maybe slightly smaller than usual (display that is) as I may need a fast getaway car not a mercedes sprinter

Right then as you will see from the piccies that wellies will be needed to launch your boats, this is not an excuse not to come as most of you wear them anyway.Obviously the preffered way is left on right and right on left this usually works for the localls!!!!!!!!! read into that which ever way you want ;)

One thing I would reccomend is that you bring a table with you for your model .

There will be FREE tea and COFFE provided, there is a cafe on site PLEASE support it if you can excellent food and drinks

I shall bring the Higgins Hellcat http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8783.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=8783.0), and the S.M.B.C. Club Perkasa http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12000.0 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12000.0), which I haven't got more pics of yet, was dark and miserable the other day and everyone else was busy, so I had to take them with one hand on tranny and other on camera (the outcome wasn't very good).  We also have a pasting table I could bring if needed. Would it be needed Bill? Have a couple of other useful bits that I could bring with me.

BTW if anybody is wondering about bringing wife and kids, but they are not that into boats.

There are other things to do on site. There is a big rope assualt course/adventure thing for the kids, the museum of slate mining is free, there are also a series of walks around the site that are all well way-marked (some with spectacular views. Not to mention the minature steam railway, and the Snowdon Star boat trips.

If you want to go a bit further, within a mile of the site there is Dolbadarn Castle, the Snowdon Mountain narrow guage train (yes two railways), Electric Mountain tours where you take a ride into the power station built into the mountain, free art exhibitions, Welsh mountain honey and icecream.

Hope you don't mind me butting in Dave.

Hi Stavros
This 8 min Omra boat race. 1 do you have a course set out.? 2 Do you have a lap counter system? If not I will bring one. Can you make it a 10 min race with a 1 min mill time start. The Max number of boats should be no more then 7/8 boats in a heat. Elf & safety ressons.
I take it all norm OMRA rules should be carried out at all times. Agian Elf & safety.
Cheers for now.

Long range forcast as follows from the 26th of August

Most parts will be cloudy on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain. The rain being heaviest and most persistent in the north and west where it is also expected to be windy. The rain should be lighter and more patchy in the south and east. The northwest is likely to remain unsettled on Wednesday, but most other parts should be dry with some sunshine. Similar weather is expected at the end of next week and over the weekend with the Northwest being unsettled but mainly fine weather in the south and east. Temperatures will be mainly near average, perhaps warm in the southeast. A good deal of fine and warm weather is likely for the following week, although more unsettled weather in the northwest may spread to some western parts later.

See how good I am to you lot even arranging fine weather I HOPE

I have taken the liberty of starting a new thread for the Chit Chat surrounding the Llanberis Mayhem event.

This is to prevent the main detail of the event, and the things people need to know, being lost in the noise.

So chatting about who is brining the sandwiches can be on this Chit Chat thread.

This thread will be deleted soon after the event.

It can be rather difficult to mapread and still concentrate on the road when you are by yourself and riding a m/bike. I don't have satnav fitted  (yet).

Drive south on the main road until you pass the lake on LHS ( you do not need to go into village). Just past the end of the lake you take the left turn for the National Slate Museum. At the end of this road turn left into the museum and park. Make for the lakeside, there should be some Mayhem signs.

Correct. I got my R and L mixed up, but I have now ammended my post above. Sorry for the confusion.

You will pass the laybye and the carpark for the lake, then take the first road on the left. It has bus shelters on the corner. Drive past the first carpark.

Then go all the way to the end of the road and turn left into the museum, and use the car park adjacent to the museum and lake.

Andy in the 1st place unless you have got a driving licence I will drive you there according to my sat nav is 254 miles to the camp site.
Which is a bit more then you said. 508 miles round trip.
I hope it is worth it for us OMRA/ Mad Makara Men.  There is a 1st & a last time for all things.

Oh its only 480 mile return for me, don't worry Bill D203 when not running you can have a poke around some of the other styles of boats that will be there--that should give you a good laugh {-)
And just in case my springer goes awol, I thought I had better bring my own rescue boat-----springer size of course {-)

Very nice.
How big is it?
I did get up to Wicksteed park in May. I liked what I saw there on the Saturday. Are those nice RNIL life boat chaps coming along? I nearly brought a hull At Wicksteed. Still got a fancy to have a go at building one.

Bill, the rescue boat is 8" long, and I'm with you I love those lifeboats, very nearly bought one at the Beale park weekend, but I have a feeling that money will change hands at the model boat show in Warwick (unless a nice trader turns up in llanberis with one)
Oh the little dingy does have the word "playmobil" on the bottom, but with a dremel and some paint :)

The Andyn Skunkworks 'Mystery Boat' is taking shape nicely.

Andyn Skunkworks are not revealing many details at this point in time, but large crates from 'Spare-Parts Industries' have been seen arriving at the top secret building facilities at Bedroom, Hertfordshire. Reporters claim that the boat is between 1 and 2 feet long, electrically powered, and grey.

A statement from Andrew, head of the company, details: The boat is taking shape nicely. We only have to make a rudder and put in the servo and water trials will be continued.

No other details are available at this present time, although the company assures Mayhem News that all will be revealed at Llanberis in a week.

If we can get batteries cooked quick enough you could enter it in the steering comp. The Perkasa should be in it, I hear component shop are going to be there? I want to get a 12v Ni-Cd or two for it.

Oh and by the way, how many people are going to be operating on 27mhz? I shall be on Brown and Red.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK6GXCN0EFc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK6GXCN0EFc)

Far away a voice is calling,
Bells from memory do chime
Come home again, come home again,
They call through the oceans of time.

We'll keep a welcome in the hillside.
We'll keep a welcome in the Vales
This land you knew will still be singing
When you come home again to Wales.

This land of song will keep a welcome
And with a love that never fails,
Well kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales.

whats the control like on that?
Hi Not sure what you mean about control?? It is ruining on a 40 MHz radio set . All the origanal drive motors and RC unit are in the bin. It now has a 540 type motor M tronic SC oh and a rudder which it didn't have when i first got the boat. It started out as one of them cheap Maplin/Argus/ Cheap boats and it's been converted into something that now works. All the lights are LED's of one short or another.
It has a fair turn of speed & the battery duration is OK. I could do with some better battery's, but as i did it only for the night sail i didn't want to speed to much. When this weekend is all over I will take it down our club so any young folk who want to try out RC boating can use it.

If you want/need these, go to Bangor, a 15 minute drive.

Right then it's getting closer by the day and me is pannicking etc

A couple of MAJOR rules by the Establishment

NO LITTER TAKE IT HOME PLEASE
NO GOING ON THE WASTE TIP
EVERYONE TO BE OUT OF THE VENUE BY 7PM PROMPT
NO ONE TO BE IN THE VENUE EXCEPT THE ORGANISERS AND SECURITY STAFF
IF ANYONE WHO IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE IS CAUGHT THERE AFTER 7PM EVENT CANCELLED IMMEDIATLY

Now these are what I have had to agree on the ball  is in your court lads and lasses, the last rule believe you me is the most serious one,if we want to have the event here next year we have got to abide by their rules.
BUT as the Parc warden said they are cool with everything so lets keep them this way

Right it is 1230 am and me has finally finished packing etc some piccies of the chaos caused in organising an event of this type, would I do it again YES.

I have ended up with a slight problem in the garden tonight as I have a new age traveller camping in it and some unsavory characters also came round !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.................SEE PICTURES

If anyone wants to put up their Gazebo I am at the venue all day,the gates do get shut at 7pm though. If you want to have a look around feel free to come and say hello etc etc maybee have a beer or three.

I am hoping that the Night sail CAN BE HELD at the venue contrary to what has been said in previous posts,I am working hard on this,if this happens there will b a BARBAQUE which I will supply the barbis, and no they will NOT BE BURNING MY NEW TABLES.
BRING YOUR OWN FOOD.What I am hoping is that I can get a key form the boss of the venue and get everyone off the site by 9pm which will give us plenty of time for both the night sail and Barbie, keep your fingers crossed on this one.I have been able to pull everything else off so here goes.Nothing ventured nothing gained so to speak.

Anyone needing to contact me then phone my mobile 07884074857.I will not be able to get on line tomorrow night so I will not be able to ans Pm's etc

ALL THE BETS LADS AND HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY IT AND LETS HAVE SOME FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN

Hello,

Spent all day at Llanberis, the weather was very kind, nice and warm, the sun even came out a few times too.
Stavros should be awarded a GOLD MEDAL for his efforts, it was terrific !!, loads of smiling faces. lots of boats of all
different sorts, from all out Racers, to "Fun Ships", ALL getting along just fine !!.
Very nice to see different sorts of boats at the same Event, they are usually at specialist ones, not often seen together.
The lake has beautiful clear, clean water, looks clean enough to drink, no "Tide mark" round the edges,- - - just clean.

I was sailing my One Metre boat, the only one which would fit into my "borrowed" car !, but the lake is just fine for
much bigger boats like my Schooner, just wait till next time!.
A VERY enjoyable day, all to soon it was time to come home.
Stavros, put me down for your next one.

A very Happy,
John. O0  O0  O0  O0  O0  O0

Llanberis , one of my favourite lakes which we visit once a year for a swimming event , this time it was to visit the Mayhem Llanberis weekend , and although not being able to stay the 2 days had a great time on the Saturday.
There were some clubs, traders a Bring and buy stall and most important a free tea & Coffee table I believe courtesy of Blackheath Model Boat Club, The Company was superb and met some fellow mayhemers I had not previously met , Tiger Tiger , barty230 and SteamboatPhil to name a few and the quys from Omera who put on regular displays on the Main lake (sharks around Stavros in the Rescue Boat).
All in all it Was a great day and one which I hope that will become part of the Season Calendar as for this as a venue I do not think can be beaten.  WELL DONE STAVROS and of course his helpers.

Thanks must go to Mark of A Model World and Ian of The Component Shop who attended. Thanks must also go to the traders who donated prizes O0 O0 O

Thanks must also go to the Colwyn Bay Club and Holyhead Club for attending nice one lads O0 O0 O0 O0

Thanks must go to teh OMRA lads who turned up,Bill 203,Gaz I will get that dammed boat running if it kills me,Andyn, another whos name I forget and Miss /sorry old age has taken over,Thanks a lot for putting on shuch a craking display.Bill won teh LLanberis speed demon award,Gaz won teh Welsh leek and some fresh one's for his perseverance and not forgetting Andyn for winnign the straight running comp Well done lads

Special thanks must go to the Warden of the Slate Museum without his overwhelming support this event would not have gone ahead.

Right then what happened well we all had FUN AND EVEN MORE FUN over the 2 days of the event we had over 400 people turn up whether they were Mayhemers, local club members of even Joe public. All I know is that over 50 Mayhemers attended this event.OK not  a lot BUT I bet it will treble next year,as yes the Authorities want us back.
Not only do they want us back BUT it has been agreed that free camping and caravaning will be allowed on this site, yes you did read correct FREE.
But wait for it not only does he want us back but he has invited the OMRA crowd to hold a round of the British Championship at Llanberis.

Yes I will be running another event at Llanberis come what may try, and stop me.

On a purely and this is a personal note to all of you out there who did not attend, sorry but you do not know what you missed believe you me.

Well. Made it home 4.75 hours.  What a road that A5 is.
What can I add??? Thanks for all your hard work. The Mayhem team.  If you run it again try stopping us next year from coming along. We have had a Brillo time playing on so much clean clear water. What a pleasure.
The Pics are very good of my boat. Well done to whoever took them as I know taking pic's of my boat doing 30mph + is not easy.
Any way best get back down to earth and get ready to go to work in the morn.
Cheers one and all and thank you all once again.

It all looks like it was a fantastic weekend, well done to Stavros, and to everyone that took the time to post photos!

Assuming the event will be repeated next year, can anyone tell me if there is any decent B&B accomodation nearby at a reasonable cost? I'd like to plan ahead for a trip down, and camping is definately not on my agenda! ;)

I also think that 50 Mayhemers there is quite an achievement so another big congratulations!

I can only hope that I will be at home for the next one but if not, once again my thoughts and best wishes will be with you.

Are there any pictures of the scale models? and did the large Waverley make an appearance please?

Hope to to be at the Warwick show later in the year. (gotta get my fix, as they say)

Glad to hear that people actually enjoyed the IC racing :)
Well here is my report on the Llanberis weekend its been sent to OMRA so fingers crossed guys!

Model Boat Mayhem Llanberis weekend

we were invited to an event held in the north of Wales in a place called Llanberis. The event was organised by a group called Model Boat Mayhem and the administrator was a man called Dave Jones (but as we knew him Stavros). Dave organised and controlled the whole day alongside him was his right hand man (steamboat) Phil.  All throughout the day different boats set sail on the three lagoons each one having a different purpose. There where competitions held and we flew the OMRA flag high and proud winning a few of them ourselves. We saw Tugs, Grey boats, Springer’s, steam boats and even submarines and each one was controlled differently to the other. Some of the club members allowed us to control their boats and have a go; in exchange we answered questions they wished to know about our club and boats. We also took part in a night sail with electric and pilot boats with torches and LED lights all over them trying to support them as much as they supported us during our demo of how fast our boats really can go.
The weekend was extremely well organised with a first aider on site all day to help if needed, lucky he wasn’t but he had a great time experiencing all the different types of boats with his son. There was a lady called Margret who handed out free tea and coffee making sure we were all well watered and she was even nice enough to fill our flasks before we headed home. The warden showered us with intriguing visits and he looks forward to next year seeing more of the OMRA crew and there speed demon boats. There were two trade stalls on site, Model Power and Component Shop, where people bought fittings and electronics for their boats.
The venue was very sheltered by the surrounding Snowdonia National Parks’ mountains so the little amount of wind gave us a flat calm lake. The lake was huge, roughly 1 mile wide with a length of around 2 – 2 ½ mile (Plenty of room for our boats, big and small). The car park was £3.00 for the day with toilets next to the slate museum and there were train rides up to mount Snowdon suitable for all the family. There was always something to do even if you weren’t very interested in the boats.
There weren’t as many OMRA members there as expected as many pulled out at the last minute but we did have our representatives. Doing such a marvellous job so far, we have been invited back to do our stuff again next year! Many members of the model boat mayhem and the public seemed very interested in what we do and how it’s organised, questions where thrown around and answered easily so that they could be understood. We helped out a new member of the OMRA club called Gary who has made his boat by scratch due to sheer interest in IC racing. Over the weekend he had various problems and after some help from Bill Warder and Robin Butler his boat was soon up and running! With thanks to Andy and his waders for constant launching and retrieving, things finally worked out for Gary. He was so determined to make his boat run well he won the Welsh leek award for perseverance. So by helping new members of OMRA while we were there everyone seemed happy and all the boats worked well in the end! It was a decent and enjoyable experience for all, exchanging knowledge on subjects and just being helpful all round.
Overall I would say it was a very successful and enjoyable experience to be able to share our knowledge and experiences with newbie racers and the members of the model boat mayhem who haven’t even saw an IC boat race before! We learnt a lot about the other boats and even about our own , we were well looked after and basically had a ecstatic time, it is recommended that next year you go even if you only turn up for the one day because it’s a lot of fun and new friends can be made.

After a marathon round trip, ( due to me trust the stupid Crap Nav, 5 1/2 hours to do a 4 hour journey  >:( )
I'm back in safe 'flat lands' of East Anglia ( these mountain things will never catch on! ), back home and back to work.......groan!

Just quickly while I'm on tea break:

Well done Stavros, worked like Trojan all weekend.
( Stavros' knee was playing up and had to go home at one stage in obvious agony but was back a little while later all Drugged up and dashing about keeping everyone happy.) 'Hats off' to you sir!   Stavros knows how to put on a show I can tell you. The 6 low level flypast's by the mountain rescue helicopter was most impressive!

Steamboat Phil supplied a loads of equipment, including Free tea, coffee and biscuits.... and good entertainment.

Well done to Margaret for making the tea.... what a fun lady!

Highlights of the weekend....
The venue - the most picturesque model boat venues I've even been to ... one of the most picturesque Anything I've been to!
The OMRA racing,
The "Owl & the Pussy cat" in the rescue boat.
Margaret in the tea marquee.
The Colwyn bay MBC display.
Fouling Hanna's Springer on a obstacle mooring line.....
Doing exactly the same thing to Big Don's Northsider five minutes later... subsequently being banned from the lake!
Phil loosing at Straight Running again!
Great to see some very old boats (mainly 2nd hand from flebay) restored and working again.
The Suzy Q speed ski boat........ with working driver and skier!
Unpressurised sales talk from Mark - A Model World - and parting with money.
Unpressurised sales talk from Ian - The Component Shop - and parting with money.
Jay's totally indestructible speed boat - hit every rock at least 10 times and flew up out of the water at least 6 times and was still the last boat running!
Meeting up with many Mayhemers.
Meeting TigerTiger.

Parking within 10 feet of the water.... for everybody!
Facilities and toilets with 2 minutes walk.
The Vivian Diving Centre lake.
All the free slate.
The Slate Museum ( a MUST see! )
'Pete's Eats' breakfast.

Great cooperation between all all parties attending, (apart from one stroppy canoeist who tried to make a point of setting of between all the model boats...)
Friendly atmosphere of all attending.
Long unhurried chats with fellow modellers.
.... The venue and scenery... truly spectacular scenery.

Photos to follow......

Rats!   I was absolutely determined to come in 2009, having not made it this year.   However there is just one thing that would take priority, the Fairport Convention Festival at Cropredy,  but it couldn't be the same weeekend could it?   Just checked and it is :-(   Best hope now is to come up for the day on the Sunday but it's a long haul from Oxfordshire after a concert finishing at midnight :-(

It all looks like it was a fantastic weekend, well done to Stavros, and to everyone that took the time to post photos!

Assuming the event will be repeated next year, can anyone tell me if there is any decent B&B accomodation nearby at a reasonable cost? I'd like to plan ahead for a trip down, and camping is definately not on my agenda! ;)

Regards
Eddy

Hi Eddy
There is loads of B&B in Llanberis and surrounding area. There was a list provided by Stavros for this event somewhere on here. I have no doubt there will be for next year as well.

Well having got back from llanberis, went straight (well as straight as I can go) to Prague, I have now returned. I would just like to say well done Stavros, I had a great time, and met a lot more Mayhemers (more names and faces to add to my full memory)
It really was a great weekend which went all to quick.Didn't take many pics as I seemed to be rushing around all the time (only had my boat on the water twice)
Highlights for me:
Meeting TigerTiger and the Longbuild
Seeing the OMRA boats running up close (and I do mean close)
Holding the cord while Marks tug pulled me, Stavros and the dingy  O0 O0
Watching Ghost walk around the lake, hire a rowing boat, row back across the lake to film the Omra boats just as they finished their runs, then having to row back across the lake  {-) {-) {-)
Not running a boat straight (again)
Being beaten at straight running by a radio chap (again) :( nice one Andy  O0
And of course having fun with fellow boaters :)

One of the highlights for me was seeing so many kids and families taking part.
I think one of the reasons for this is the venue. There is so much to do on and around the site, its more than just the boats.

Other highlights
Seeing Stavros in full swing, doing what he does best. Organising things and making them happen.
Meeting Steamboat Phil with his wicked laugh. Finding out about steam.
Margret was a real star, and was enjoying herself, and she worked very hard keeping us all full of tea and biscuits. I didn't even see her take a break.
A couple of risky jokes from the Welsh Druid.
Chatting with Martin Mayhem
Meeting No Mustang Mark and Hannah and Mum.
Meeting the Longbuild
Watching and chatting to the OMRA guys and gals. And seeing them enjoy being with us.
Meeting MarkH from Denbigh with his lad. How he puts up with his dad I will never know. ;)
Saturday's weather.

Low points
Seeing a Colin Archer for sale at the bring and buy for only £160. But not being able to buy it and take it home.
Going home.

Hard Work !!

Rowing 10 .5 miles on lake Windermere in a moderate wind is hard work , and I get to do it again this Saturday while 40 mad and or crazy swimmers swim the length of the lake in a normal costume.. {-) {-) O0

Next year will be much easier mate, honest!!!!!.....and I've ordered the sun for Sunday!!  This year was beset by not knowing some details literally until the last minute, but you coped. The hair you pulled out during the week .... kid the lassies it's a solar panel for a sex god!!!!....only joking.  It was worth it all.  And Phil we all know how much effort you put in..sincere thanks...next year we might insist you play a bit more on the lake......you might even win the straight running, dare I say third time lucky?!!!.....Be warned you might see me having a go next year...I've even sorted a boat out...but haven't tested..watch this space.

 >>:-(I allways build my boat's to sail on the surface of the water and thought everyone else did the same??? So  am I doing something wrong??? Because if not why is the depth of water an issue?? Lack of depth or an over abundance of weed I can understand but to much water.... nope can't see it. Surely common sense and good seamanship say that if the boat or the weather conditions are unsuitable you don't sail or have I been getting it wrong all these years????
