Title: What Timber to use?
Post by: Charlie on June 27, 2018, 05:37:30 pm
What type of timber is most suitable for the planking on a double diagonal construction hull? Hull design is Round Bilge, so the timber has to be quite bendable.
Suggestions please.

Lime is often the wood of choice. Easy to work and flexible.

Hi Colin,

Do you know of a good supplier? I looked on the SLEC website, as they always get recommended on here, but they don't appear to sell Lime.

Hi Charlie,
SLEC market it as Basswood. In Europe it is Lime in the Americas Basswood but basically the same stuff. Can be confusing!

ikea market it as wooden venetian blinds, but boot fairs are also a good source, I can usually pick up 40 48" slats in a blind for a couple of quid, a fiver if they are really holding out, from each slat I cut a strip from each side avoiding the cutouts for the strings about 3/8" wide to 1/2" 80 planks for a few quid. if you get 3 blinds for a tenner that will keep you in planking for a good few models.

If you are cutting your own planks, I have seen cedar mentioned a lot. I have used cheap pine (battens) as a source, just look for straight grained pieces and work around the pieces with knots. If you go to 3mm thick, a bit of steam helps to bend them. Pine is not ideal, but it is cheap; even it a bit harder to work with.

You might also find it listed as Linden.  Some European countries call lime trees; Linden ( as in "Unter Den Linden")
