Anyone know of a really matt varnish? I've tried some test pieces, and Humbrol's matt coat is still a bit too glossy for me.
Not aerosol- I want to add a wee bit of colour to weather things down a bit.

Humbrol No 49 tinlet Matt Varnish seems to give a very good matt finish although perhaps a little soft.

Thanks, Colin.
Will try- I'm over to Englandshire in the 2CV next week, and will pick up a tin.

I use Humbrol 49 from tinlets and have done for a good twelve years but you have to give it a really really god stir followed by another good stir to get all the contents mixed well. I had one tin that came out like butterscotch in colour and like caramel in consistency but this is one in twenty odd tins bought.

A lot depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Humbrol matt 49 is good for fittings and wood trim etc. but I wouldn't want to use it on a hull for example where something like Ronseal polyurethane mattcote gives just a slight sheen and resists marks much better.

Hi years ago you could buy a tube of matting agent but not sure if you can still get it you put a bit in a little at time till you get to the finish you want low sheen to very matt good luck if you can find some.

Just Googled 'matting agent' and there were quite a few options there

If you just want to take the shine off, a light rub with some metal polish such as solvol autosol but watch out for edges and corners . Too energetic and you will take it them back to wood. Automotive rubbing compound will achieve the same.
-
Metal polish will "Shine" the paint not dull it. That's my experience.

It will smooth the paint surface but will not produce a glass like shine of a gloss lacquer, at least with the products I have used.

Hannants Xtracolour Matt Varnish is a lot better than humbrol and easier to clean out an airbrush. Thins well and produces a very matt finish
-
Testors Dullcote - nothing better.

It's worth bearing in mind the the more matt the finish, the more prone it tends to be to pick up marks or staining.

not exactly a problem with working boats :} I like Revell #2 tinlets for really matt but agree the slight sheen of the matt-polyurethene is better to look like painted metal at our viewing distances & in photographs. While buying paint here are a couple of pics of a working boat`s deck, might be handy.

I do think there is a difference between expertly applied weathering and just letting your boat get dirty!
