Schaarhorn
..part of some dreamers collection of odd ball ships and tugs that he moored in [I think] either Whitehaven or Workington harbour...
.he bought the ships and sailed them through the Caledonian Canal down to Cumbria in the early 1980's with the vision and dream of a floating museum.
a mate and I went up one Saturday to look at them and walked all around Schaarhorn, inside and out...
...the boat reeked of splendour and opulence although in a bad state of repair.
his dreams came to nowt, and the ships eventually disappeared....but long before Caldercraft brought out the kit, I always thought she would make a lovely model......I think the real ship went back to Germany.
he called his collection something like McHAYLES NAVY...
.one tv channel even did a documentary of his fleet sailing the canal.

The late aerosole* Keith Schellenberg, Olympic bob sledder, vintage car racing driver/collector , pillock, hooray Henry etc etc. He who ran the Isle of Eigg like his personal fiefdom much to the distress of the islanders, owned the Schaarnhorn yacht for a while. I saw it docked in a north-east Scottish port, maybe Buckie. He also owned the Brooklands circuit lap record holder car, the Barnato-Hassan Bentley , an 8 litre supercharged monster. He took it to the Rest and be thankful hill-climb, a sledgehammer to crack a peanut. Failed. BTW the islanders on muck still %) don't know who torched his vintage 1927 Rolls-Royce fire engine hack/shooting brake /runabout. Pron. "aerosol" is spoken with a Swedish accent. *The above descriptions are recorded in a court case he was involved in so non libelous... it was the judge that said some of them.

She did indeed return to Germany, from Birkenhead, and was fully restored to working condition, including her original engines and coal fired boiler. She is used almost daily during the summer months, cruising the Elbe and Hamburg areas.

She was laid up in Buckie for a few years ( that's where they towed her back to Germany from ) , she had some work done by the local shipyard and then was just left to rot.
-
Was it Buckie, Birkenhead, Bremerhaven?
Or
Birkenhead, Buckie, Bremerhaven?
A long way round either way.
Was she still mobile or needing a tow?

It was Buckie, Maryport, Birkenhead (quite how I don't know towed I think), Hamburg on board a heavy lift vessel called Candock 111? I think. I was there the day they did the loading and have quite few pictures.

A nasty Mr Toad - https://www.theguardian.com/uk/1999/may/20/jamiewilson1
I came across him once at Fintry Hill Climb in the 80's. He had entered a magnificent '30's Bentley; all leather bonnet straps and BRG. The car was useless at the hill climb but sounded wonderful - the owner less so.

Back on topic, I see the Schaarhorn yacht (full size) is back in action this weekend during the Elbe Fest in Hamburg harbour and vicinity taking members of the public for cruises. Wish I was there :(( :(( :(( <:( ,. . . . or Spa F1 ;)

She even spent some months in one of the Canada Docks (South)Liverpool I think. She was in quite a state when I saw her. <:(
