USS Blueback Sea Trials at Last!!!
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:41:39 pm »

I finally got my battery delivered and wired up to run the BB.
If I push her under initially, she gets all the air out and will then trim quite level. If I just put her in and dump the air, she sinks stern down and the tip of the bow stays dry. The air vents in the bow aren't big enough. This is why we do trial runs aye? If everything was perfect first up, we'd get bored.
The micro servos that I used, were ones that came with a radio from Hitec and aren't gutsy enough to drive the planes and rudder. It will move them slowly on the bench, but not at all under any load. I'll have to lash out for some high torque ones. I've got the linkages working as freely as I can and I think they're OK. I set the rudder at half starboard for the test and vid so she'd go around in a big ark. It worked OK. The people watching didn't notice that I wasn't steering it! I tried hard to find a spot with no hecklers, but they showed up. Always the way with subs aye?

Here’s a 5 minute video clip and slide show on the testing.

HI! Who is the kit made by? And is the wtc you used the one BD designed for the seawolf? Also what batteries did you use and what sort of run time do you get?

Kit is by Steve Neill, and is a vacformed hull with resin sail and appendages.

You can easily contact Steve over on the Subpirates board.

I don't know if the WTC is a standard Seawolf variant, or a modification. Blueback is a bit bigger I thin, so there may be a slight difference.

Thanks guys.
The WTC is a Big Dave one alright. It's much the same as the Seawolf one. The longer tube is meant to go up front to give more air space for the RCABS as the aft section is sealed off to stop air pressure breaching the subtech seals. I put the long one aft as I used a subtech belt drive unit whivh is longer than the reccommended GWS unit. It works alright. Could use a bit more air space, but I'm happy with it trimming for diving at tower top level. The battery I use is a 7.4v 1800mah LI-POLY. I don't know what range I'll get as I haven't tried it for longer than a few circles with the rudder fixed. I'm waiting for new servos. The Hitec micro H55 s are too weak. I'm using H81s instead. I'll load another video when I get it sorted out properly.

Jason,

What are you holding the WTC in the hull with, I used several large plastic ties the kind you can undo, works easy and simple to fit...

Hi Roy

I put a brass bracket accross the aft tube that screws to the frames and the front is held by the front tube going in through the hole in the frame and it has a wet suit rubber pad glued on top to make it a snug fit. To get it out, I undo the 2 screws and pull the middle tube up which breaks the seal of the orings on the back join and allows the dog bone coupling to come away and the front to pull out etc. The control rods must first be un snapped. I since fitted ball joints to them.

Just a question Jason, it seemed to perform great mate but from here it did look a bit nose heavy, which could explain the porpoise effect, other than that really well done mate good one......Just out curiosity where were you sailing her, it looked like a sewage plant water, bit brownish mate........

Hi Roy
Sorry I'm slow to reply. Not at all upset by the Qs.
I had the apc set at the wrong angle when I closed up the back caps. It's mounted on velcro and this made her run bow down. I was duck diving her to keep track as the water (as you noticed) is very muddy due to it being a storm water run-off area at "Cherry Lake" in Altona-Melbourne. She was also a tad out of trim and bow down. It's a slow proccess as you know, to get the trim just right. I find the water in our town supply (bathtub) has a quite different gravity to that in the muddy lake and adjusting trim at home is a bit of a waste as my boats are always different at the lake. I use lead and foam so the proportions are slightly different at different water as a result.
Feel free to ask more if you want!

             Grant
Just noticed I hadn't answered the question about run time. I get about 50 minutes of average running and she's back to about 7.4v. I have a voltage cutout on the ESC at 6v incase I get carried away and run her right out. The Lipos get hot if you run them too low so I'm told. She'd go well over an hour if I didn't care about the low voltage etc.

Just another video I took today of the BB. She lost a rudder a week ago as I didn't have much of a notch in the shaft and not I think the locktight dried before I finished doing up the screw. It's a bit tight back there!!!
The new one can't fall off so easy and I made it the scale shape but bigger. The last one I did was more like a yacht rudder. It really does steer well now.

Hi could you tell me what servos you used and what the torque rating is, as you said originally that the first servos you tried werent torquey enough, and if these ones work i would like to use the same ones in my type 7

Thanks

Grant :)

The copy paste below has the details. Don't even think about using the standard plastic geared version. I stripped a cog on the first use. The MG is a good little servo. I changed the layout in the Blueback and fitted a Hitec standard servo for the steering and used the micro on the dive planes. It's good.

Hitec HS-81MG Servo
$21.99

The Hitec HS-81 and HS-81MG are among Hitec’s most popular servos. Available in both resin and metal gear versions. With a fine balance between speed and torque, the HS-81’s were designed to be both economical and reliable.

Motor Type 3 Pole Ferrite
Bearing Type Top Ball Bearing
Torque 4.8/6.0v 36 / 42 oz. 2.6 / 3.0 kg.
Speed 4.8/6.0v 0.11 / 0.09 second
Size 1.2 x 0.5 x 1.2" 30 x 12 x 30 mm
Weight Metal 0.67 oz. 19 g.
