Mast and boom material?
« on: February 28, 2010, 12:00:24 pm »

My ancient 575 yacht which I'm rebuilding had a wood dowel mast and plastic booms for the main and jib sails, I'd like to replace these with something stronger and a bit more up to date.

Any ideas as to what material I could use and where to obtain them?

Cheers,

I replaced the mast and boom on my 575 years ago. I used aluminium tubing from B & Q,worked fine for me and as cheap as chips  :-))

Yeh, I replaced the gooseneck with a homemade one and it worked fine :-))
I Kinda regret giving it away in the end as they are great little boats.

I had one many years ago when they first came out Bri, sailed straight from the box...I sold it later, don't know why.  <:(

Bought this one from a Mayhem member and it's looking much better now, and I've also got another brand new original Duplex kit to build as well.

I don't suppose you can recall how you made your gooseneck, can you? Any info, pics, etc would be welcome...

I`m sorry mate but I can`t remember {:-{ (it was years ago)
I do remember I did a few mods on her  though, put in new lead ballast instead of the concrete stuff and changed all the rigging as well as the mast and boom.

No worries mate, guess I can figure something out. The concrete ballast was a novel idea...different, you have to give them 10/10 for that! I used lead fishing weights in my original one, the rebuild one hasn't got that far yet, but I did notice a roll of lead sheet laying in one of the company vans this morning....  ;)
