Hi all,
Im tring to find a diagram for a LED chaser that has a trail. Like the one on KITT the Knight Rider car.

Does anyone know where i could find one?

try Maplins, they do kits and wiring project drwaings for just about anything, probably listed under Disco gear or similar.

Hey, I built a Knightrider the other day. Eight super-bright LEDs.
If you can't find a ready-made job, I could post you the circuit. Uses a common PIC.

Hmm... not a bad price.
Looks like it employs a dual 4-bit shift register though. That could be a possible clue that the output effect would not have that 'trail' that F-Fingers mentioned in his original post. The PIC version does.
Four effects are pre-programmed so far, but it's a simple matter to burn more sequences as and when you dream 'em up.
I ommited a speed potentiometer in favour of software-controlled speeds (just a matter of preference really). The pushbutton switch is the mode switch -- each press to select a different sequence.
The PIC?...
The PIC cost about £6.20. Yeah, I know... stinking dear. But most of that is gobbled-up on VAT and postage fees. The programming cost nowt'.

If you have more front than M&S just take advantage of Microchips policy of sending free samples.  The 16LF84A should work fine with PMKs code (right PMK?).

You can get the 16F84 chips off ePay (I had quite a few chips from there with no problems so far), but if you need a chip that is less common I just get Microchip to send samples, it's cheeky but some chips seem to be too difficult to buy if you aren't in the business.

I built the circuit offered by CB900 a couple years back. Works good, but again, it doesn't have that 'trail' effect.

To anyone interested in a cheap source of Super-Bright LEDs, Wilco's are selling their Christmas stuff already. A set of white or blue tree lights (100 LEDs) for just seven quid. Easy to remove and use for more important stuff. e.g: Knightrider displays?

Is my memory bad or for the real effect don't you need the 'trailing' effect in front of as well as behind the bright LED?  (maybe I'm getting confused with Cylon raiders).  Have to turn over to Bravo or whatever and watch Knightrider later, not sure I can stand the derision from my teenage kids - 'you didn't really used to watch this did you dad?!'...

Yes definately the old style Cylons!  I enjoyed the remake though.   

A quick look on YouTube and I reckon that K.I.T.T. had 4 lights that went side to side with the two center ones being bright and the two outers being at half brightness.  The old Cylons are more difficult to find video on - from the video I found I think they just had a trail like I imagine PMKs device displays.


PMK: no player sofware on my machine - the midi plays, I looked at the processes running and no clue as to which process to kill - no big deal tho'.



Getting back to the topic ::)...  I think you'd need some kind of a diffuser to make the effect look good using those counting chip based circuits - I don't think one LED going back and forth is as convincing as a proper trailing light - just my opinion :)

Does your browser not show the standard MS Windoze player at the top of the page? The code is bog-standard HTML, so you should be seeing three buttons: Stop, Pause and Play.

Regarding the KITT chaser, and before we bore everyone witless, just one last point of interest....
I used super-bright LEDs. Each one is separated by 0.6" spacing, which seems to illiminate the need of the diffuser.  It gives a pretty good effect - even from a distance - without any of the so-called 'bleed-over'.

I made a small AVI movie of the chaser in action - about 1Mb.
Best not clog-up the new server, though.

Would like to see the unit in action PMK.

How about creating a Mayhem group on YouTube and posting the video there and giving us a link?  perhaps create a separate thread to announce the YouTube group (maybe informing Mayhem admin Martin before hand would be polite too...!).  There's actually a way to embed YouTube videos in forums like these but I believe the bb code extension has to be installed into the forum software?  My understanding is that the advantage of hosting on YouTube and embedding is theres no bandwidth overhead to Mayhem and, for the time being, no adverts!

Nope no controls (Firefox 2) - I guess it's an add in I need to install.  I get a control in IE7 beta but the website is unusable in that (Thanks Microsoft) - we can take this to PMs if you need any more info from me.

I'm way off topic, apologies to all :-\
