Dazz, I guess you were on tenterhooks waiting for a follow-up reply, eh?
When someone enquires what the size of the model is, or what voltage/props you have, I guess it's a human instinct to assume that more info. will be forthcoming.
I was in a similar situation as you at one time. You don't wanna hear the grizzly details, but in short, the questions I asked were never answered.
So rather than pester my peers with questions that had "newbie" written all over them, I took the bull by the horns and went about some experiments of my own. I dabbled with anything I could get my paws on. Auto windscreen wiper motors... auto heater motors... cordless drill motors... Speed 400... 600... etc, etc.
Same with the props. I simply dabbled with various sizes and pitch, swapping the motors, swapping the props, etc. until good results were found. Lots of disappointment along the way, but the fun and knowledge gained from experimenting is part and parcel of the hobbby.
It helps if you can experiment alone. That way you have no fear of the experts having a good chuckle at the expense of your failures.
From the knowledge that I gained, I've not used a store-bought motor since. They're waaaaay overpriced anyhow.

Stay with it.
And good luck.

Nice one PMK,
Unfortunately some of us do have to earn a crust and have been at sea till now.
I would power her with 2 x 550's on a 2.3:1 g/box from Model Slipwey on 12 volts.

Hi Dazz,
I used to run a Solent Lifeboat many years ago when the kit first came out. At that time I ran it on a pair of decaperms , too expensive now , about £50 each I think. If I were refurbishing my Solent then I would use 2 x Protech mega X 720 turbo motors. There is a shop on ebay doing them for £16 , have a look at Phills Model Shop , also available at 308hobbies.com. I am sure someone else will come up with other recommendations.

Dazz,
Deccaperms with the gearbox run at about 2750 rpm, a standard 550 on 3:1 gearbox will run at about 3000, with as much torque, but at 1/3 the price.
