Model Slipway Al Khubar Build
« on: September 14, 2009, 06:29:46 pm »

Started on my Al Khubar this week and so far I have fitted the two propshafts, Kort nozzles and the two torpedo 500 motors with the 1:2.5 gearboxes.

Had great fun trying to line everything up prior to fixing, 14 pieces had to be temporary fixed and checked for position before final fixing.

All the running gear came from Model Slipway who as usual have been super efficient and helpful.

Next job will be one of my favourites, the cutting of the freeing ports.

Take care with those freeing ports, Richard - they aren't half flimsy until you get the uprights fitted. I'd suggest clamping a length of PSE softwood along the top edge on the outside of the hull (maybe 22mm x 22mm) to keep them straight while you work on the uprights.

Cut out the freeing ports with the dremel, the dust didn't do me much good.

Waterproofed where parts come through the hull. This I did with Epoxy resin.

Fixed the deck supports around the hull.

So far so good.

Made up the I beams to support the deck.

Then I fixed the I beams.

Found a discrepancy in the dimensions so phoned MSW and spoke to Lawrie. As usual he was extremely helpful and the problem was sorted out.

I then fixed the decks which went in with very little trimming though I did have to take 5mm off the transom end of the rear deck which was where the discrepancy in the measurements occurred, which was a shame as the deck fitted perfectly, it was just to long.

I then finished off the white metal work to the Kort nozzles.

By this time the glue was getting to me so I called it a day.

It's looking lovely, Dicky. You really turn out nice models. Isn't it horrible that the dust and fumes get to you. I was looking at the cut outs on the hull and thinking 'that's a massive job' for home work. Even I would have to use my industrial face mask for that one.

As a 'by' to the above, I am holidaying in Poole next week and thought of Settley pond. Is there anything going on during the week that I might come along and see, and to meet you, perhaps.

All the best

I made up the rear hatch.

I have now fixed the bulwark braces and handrail.

I assembled the towing hook mount.

I fixed the anchors.

I fixed the surrounds for the front and rear fenders

I also sealed the joint between hull and deck with epoxy resin.

Have done a small amount of filling.

Gave the inside of the bulwarks and the outside of the hull its first coat of primer.

Showed up where I need a little more filling.

Started on the assembly of the superstructure and this is going well with very little trimming owing to the accuracy of the marking out.

Havent done to much since my last posting as the paint fumes limit me to the amount of time I can work.

Have painted the hull above the waterline.

Have been making the internals to the wheel house, pictures later.

No Mr Bluebird you are not throwing it into the lake.

Just lately I have been making the wheel house furniture, the mast, and sundry deck fittings.

Was rather spoilt when I did the Sentinel as there was lots of etched brass fittings, not on this one you have to make everything yourself using ABS and brass wire.

I have now fixed the handrails and most of the white metal fittings and have also made up the anchor winch, capstan, towing hook and all the bollards.

Hi Dicky.  Those handrails do look lovely.  Do you make the assembly on the bench first ? and then fit them to the boat, or do you locate the stanchions first and then thread the hand rails on ?

I do a bit of each Ken, which ever is easiest at the time.

The reason they caught my eye was that I've just completed mine. I used the moulded stanchions provided and decided to get the positions right, first.

Big mistake. They are quite weak and didn't like the rails being pulled through them, so consequently started snapping at the bases. (oh er!)  What a night mare. Got through it in the end, but next time I'm going your brass route. Also, I prefer them unpainted as I can never get a smooth finish with the white paint and brush.
