Hi Dicky, following your build with great interest, it's looking very nice. I've pretty much decided this is going to be my next build, hoping to pick up a kit at the weekend.
A quick question, my previous build was a plastic hull, whereas this is a glassfibre hull, the epoxy you use is it just normal stuff, what I've seen before has always been clear, not the reddy colour like yours.

Thanks,

Rowdy

Hi Rowdy, I use Z-Poxy Epoxy Resin. I think the red comes from the P40 filler under the Epoxy.

The reason they caught my eye was that I've just completed mine. I used the moulded stanchions provided and decided to get the positions right, first.
Big mistake. They are quite weak and didn't like the rails being pulled through them, so consequently started snapping at the bases. (oh er!)  What a night mare. Got through it in the end, but next time I'm going your brass route. Also, I prefer them unpainted as I can never get a smooth finish with the white paint and brush.

Ken
The castings in Mountfleet kits are pretty much 100% lead, while Model Slipway use an alloy which has a tin content and makes it much stronger. That said, as far as I can remember from making the prototype and drawing the plans Al Khubar doesn't have any cast or etched stanchions; the rails and stanchions are all made from wire.
For what it's worth, I always make up the rails and stanchion assemblies on a ply template and only transfer them to the model once the whole lot has been painted.
I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

Yes, they are still flimsy, even when all glued into place. One touch on the rails tends to pull the others over as well. It's also annoying that the broken stubs are in the exact location required for the replacement. Difficult to remove without enlarging the hole.  >:-o

I shall follow your advice in future. Cheers.

Sorry I cheated on the railings and used stanchions where I could to make it easier.

I have been fitting a few more fittings and the deck house furniture.

I have also been detailing the fittings.

I also fixed the white vinyl boot topping.

Rubber fenders are fixed and waiting for chains.

Lookin' good, dude. Are you going to fit the deckhand, sitting on the hatch with a can of beer in his hand?

Hi Richard,
you doing a super job as always. She looks great and I am looking forward seeing her in the water (at least the pix). Right now I am working on the caldercraft Clyde Puffer "Northstar" and consider model slipway's updated "Yorkshireman."Anyway, I hope you are feeling alright and keep on building such beautiful boats.

Wonderful job, Richard- as usual. I love the detail, very realistic.  :-)) However, it tends to make me feel rather inadequate  <:(  :-)

Hi Dicky,

Well I've ordered my Khubar today, so should get it early next week, not decided what motors to go with yet, just been trying to read anything I could find about 6v vs 12v, from what I can gather there shouldn't me much in it performance wise as the higher voltage has more gearing, the only real benefit I can see is less power used, would I be right in that assumption. Also I noticed in your first picture the props, are these the ones supplied or have these been bought separately?

Thanks,

Rowdy

Hi Rowdy the props are not standard but if you get in touch with Model Slipway, Laurie or Jackie can advise you. If you look in your list of parts it will tell you if you have an M4 or M5 prop shaft as not all of the kits have the same size.

You get a bit more oomph from the 12V which is ok if you want to do towing, I dont so I have the 6V.

When you come to fit the rear deck check your dimensions. Although my deck was a perfect fit to the transom it was however about 10mm to long which put the hatch opening 10mm to far forward, so I had to take 10mm off the transom end of the deck and reshape it.

Thanks Dicky, I'll find out about the props as you suggest. For the motors I was looking at the MFA 919D series which are 2.5:1, but I was wondering if this didn't give enough oomph could I just swap the gearing to convert it to the 6:1 and then change the battery or are they not designed to be changed in that way?

I'll keep an eye open for the rear deck fitting, thanks.

I used the MFA Torpedo 500 supplied by MSW and recommended for the kit.

An alternative to the MFA geared motors is the new MMB755, on direct drive @ 12v. This is one smoooooooooooooth  motor - like a 720BB Torque but less than half the price. Further details on Mark's website (and ours).

I wasn't sure whether these were the same as the 919D's, I was thinking of ordering from Model Slipway but was trying to work out some options.

What are the benefits of direct drive over the gearbox version?

Thanks,

Direct drive is much quieter. The MFA/Como 919D is the same motor as the geared Torpedo 500 - it's just a name thing.

Well all finished apart from the naming ceremony and the electrics.

Took all day to fix the tyres and a lot of swearing to fix the chains around the fenders.

The crew all arrived safely and are now on board. The figures are excellent, thanks George. I will point out at this stage that George's website is out of date and the figures now come painted and in sets of four and not the fours on the site.

No Mr Bluebird you are not throwing it into the lake.

Just lately I have been making the wheel house furniture, the mast, and sundry deck fittings.

Was rather spoilt when I did the Sentinel as there was lots of etched brass fittings, not on this one you have to make everything yourself using ABS and brass wire.

Dicky, re pic 2, just where does the washing machine fit? Bryan.
