Topic: Really big bait boat, what motor (Read 19361 times)

Hi,
I'm new here, and I'm Norwegian so I hope my English is not to bad
I am building a HUGE baitboat and is looking for tips on motors and controllers.
The boat will probably weigh at leas 20 pound when its all loaded. It will probably be running on a 12v 12ah battery and I was planning to use two propellers and two motors. I was thinking about using 1100gha bilge pumps but I was told I would get loads more power from propellers so I am looking for some cheap and really powerful motors to drag this big thing around. Weight and size is not important as there is plenty of room in the boat. All tips on motors, controllers and propellers is very welcome!

Hi Viking and welcome to the forum... My MMB 900 motors meet one of your criteria http://www.marksmodelbits.com/ they will provide plenty of power, although not the cheapest motors, they are exellent after all you get what you pay for. Prop size can be 50+ mm diameter and you would only need a controller rated to 15 amps...

Thanks, those motors looks fine, and they are within my budget

Do you have any idea of what kind of speed I will be looking at with two of these on a 20 pound katamaran (I know this is not easy to say, but a very rough estimate would be great)
I will start shopping for my bait boat in a couple of weeks and I might just send you a mail then.
Any more tips on my project will be appreciated

Yes it would, but if you go over 12 volts the number of speed controllers available to you drops and the prices get higher.

24 volts would most probably have it planing across the lake like a fast electric!!!

I guess I would have to fit water coolers too but it might just be worth the extra money and effort.

I would recommend water cooling on the higher voltages, it all depends on how long the motors will be running for each time out with the bait.

If I go for the fast option it would probably wack the bait out in five minutes, but I will probably cruise around the lakes to look for features with my echo sounder sometimes, so I guess watercooling is a must.

I've got one on the drawing board too and that isnt little either. 700x350 I'm looking at the 1000l bilge pumps as a propulsion, but a couple of high tork low rev el motors could be a possibility.

Baybe we should start a section for bait boats, seems there are more and more people on here looking for tips and suggestions on the subject. Me included.

I was thinking about the bilge pumps too, they got some at my local shop doing 1100 gallons per hour, but I've been told you'll get a lot more battery running time out of propellers. And since I'll be driving baits out from 300 to 500 meters sometimes I want a fast boat (and it looks cool too

)

Another good thing with bilgepumps are they are quiet too. Your fellow anglers might not share the pleasure of a powerboat blasting past there marks.

500metre thats a long bit of fishing line. Hope you got a big reel !

I rarely fish over 350 meters, but in this one lake I do. This is a big lake surrounded by steep, rocky hills so there is not many places one can set up for the night. And I got a fair bit of braid on my Shimano Big Baitrunner L/C reels
I completely understand what you mean about doing things quiet, I would not dream of using such a boat (if I go for the 24v option) in a lake where there was other people fishing. I've been fishing in Denmark and its a bit different where I live. I know if I was to set this boat out in a Danish carp lake I would probably be chased down by a lynch mob with pitchforks and torches

but here in Western Norway there is practically nobody fishing for carp so I won't bother anyone.
Have you seen the bilge pumps in use on a boat? If you got some pictures or video it would be really interesting to see it.

Though it looked good and upgradeable too if I decide to go for some real big motors

I will be running this on a 7 channel radio as thats what I got.

will u be able to see yr boat at 350m? I start to lose sight of mine around the 160-180 mark, my boat is only 650 x 320 though, i suppose if you have a big boat the further u can see it

When we used my mates boat at 350+ we used binoculars from about 250m. Good LED lights helps a lot too when you learn to steer by them.

Usually we have one man looking through the binos and yelling left and right and the other bloke steering and looking at the echo sounder unit (if you have a signal)

Very probably. We've had customers who've fitted a P94 to boats with two 24v motors before, and I know that at least two customers use a P94 with these particular motors on 12 volts. One of them is a guy called Brian Close whose 'Typhoon' tug featured in the Model Tug Forum. http://modeltugforum.com/index.php?topic=1321.105

You can see from Brian's beautiful model that 700 x 350 and 20kg is NOT very big in the scheme of model boats, and so I doubt if you'd need 24 volts and two of these power-houses to move it at a decent speed. NMM's own Canning tug is getting on for 1M long and has one 900 motor. He runs it on a P93 at 50% output as the full 12 volts grossly overpowers it.

Thanks for your replies! I want this to be the fastest baitboat around but I got very limited experience so all advice is apreciated! The beauty of the P94 is I can try both 12v and 24v and see what suits it best. Do you have any recommendations for the props?

My 289ci Mustang looked alot like a Shelby GT 500 but it wasn't!!!!!
I checked out one of these motors and it was fine on 12 volts but it burnt out on 24 volts in about 10 minutes. Not trying to put anyone off of these but ......... You get what you pay for!!!

I know and I hate that, hahaha. Thats why I ask so many questions on here, I live in Norway and usually has to wait two weeks for things to arrive in my mailbox. Then it's really annoying if I unwrap it, test it and burn it, all in ten minutes
