Dive-in to Summer 2010
« on: December 06, 2009, 03:59:36 pm »

Submerge at St Albans. Date for the event is Sunday June 13th 2010 10am-4pm. Cheap bar, a nice sunny aspect with a 100ftx60ft pool of crystal clear water, and free on-site parking.

The pool will be filled earlier this year, so we should have it full to the brim this time round.

£5 per person in advance £1 spectators. £10 per person on the day, £2 spectators.

Any profits made will be refunded to those on the day, however those who pay and don't turn up will have to forfeit. This is only fair to those who make the effort to come along.

Hi,

My buddy Clive and I would love to come along to Dive-In to summer.

We have three submarines between us; a pre WWI French sub, a WWII British T class, and HMS Vanguard (currently in service).

What is the best way to pre book.

Cheers.

The easiest way is to pay via Paypal to my email address. Failing that, I will accept a cheque made payable to me. PM me your email address, and I will get in contact with you to discuss further.

Sounds like some interesting models....!

Hi,

My e-mail address is cnetherway@btinternet.com, and PayPal works for me.

I'm getting all excited about the event already - just time to sort out my depth keeping mechanism before the show.

Regards

You will be pleased to hear upon visiting St Albans Sub Aqua Club tonight, I found the pool filled to the brim and gin clear- perfect.

Taken tonight.

Another shot, note the 1:1 human subs- wonder if they're fitted with levellers?

You can see all the way to the bottom! (9 feet)

The bar is well stocked, with real ale and lagers on draft, soft drinks and spirits for those who prefer to preserve their waistline! Bar snacks are also available, although I suggest you bring a packed lunch.

This will be my last posting before the event, so to those that have already signed up, see you there. To those who have been wavering, you have four more days to get your money to me to benefit from the reduced rate.

The weather forecast is showing high pressure, so fingers crossed the sun will be shining on the day. I will be there from 9:00am, anyone turning up early may be drafted into lending a hand putting out the tables! ;)

There will be some small topical road signs close to the venue, so keep your eyes peeled for the little black submarines which point the way.

Thanks Andy, myself and Michael had a great time at our first dive-in. We were made very welcome and Michael was thrilled to drive so many different subs, thanks folks  :-))

The esc in Michaels Unseen fried on her first dive this morning but not before he had 10 minutes of fun! The esc is packed up ready to go for repair.

I will post some photos and video later.

Cheers

Okay, this turned out to be a fantastic day with seventeen people turning up to sail, and quite a few spectators from our hosting scuba diving club. My thanks to everyone that turned up and supported the event- it doesn't happen without you.

I counted 24 boats on display, with a wide variety of subjects. The weather was bright, sunny and pleasantly warm.

Here are some pictures, I'm sure others will add to them.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for a great day, me and Clive really enjoyed it. Sorry I took so long to sort out this posting, life's been full.

I took some under water footage, but it appears to be out of focus. Did anyone else have this problem? The camera seemed to be working fine, but the result was blurred under water  <:(.

Does anyone else have underwater footage? What has happened to the 'Professional' underwater video footage?

You tube is taking its time processing my video, so I'll add a link to it with my next posting.

Meanwhile here's some of the stills I took.

Finally got my video through YouTube.

The link is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4vYLGk5s8I

If anyone has an idea about the focus problem, can they let me know.
I've had problems in the past with condensation on the lense, but I don't think that that was the problem this time, as the final shot as it comes out of the water is sharp.

I found some other underwater fotage of the day on YouTube, and its a lot clearer than mine.

Perhaps I need some sort of optical filter over the lens. Any ideas?

Chris.

I think the problem could be the domed housing you have acting as a second lens.

Try taking some footage in the back garden and see if that is out of focus. You may need to make up a cylinder with a flat piece of glass or acrylic at the front, and just round off the edges to provide a bit of streamlining.

I Think that your right!

The image is perfectly clear when out of the water, but I think there is a lensing effect under the water.

Previous footage I took with the dome in the local lake was clear, but I moved the position of the camera inside the dome to make room for a magnetic on/off switch.

I'll try a quick rebuild (always the fun bit for me).

Cheers

Have a look at this for a bit of inspiration-

http://rc-sub.com/underwatercamera.html

If you take a close peek at the pictures, you'll see the front is a piece of flat acrylic sheet, with a machined edge, solvent welded to some acrylic tubing.

You'll have to make your housing a bit bigger to accommodate the flycam footprint.

Its OK, I work at a company that makes drain inspection cameras.

There was much shaking of heads and tutting when I showed the mechanical engineers my camera housing.

I've now been given a nice bit of flat acrylic for the window, and I'm going to machine a housing to take it.

I was very impressed with the speed and agility of some of the smaller boats the other week, and I've been musing with motorising the pod to make a complete dynamic diving sub.

I'll get the towed pod working first, but I think a nippy self propelled camrera pod may appear in the future.
