Hemmens twin twin whats it worth?
« on: January 24, 2010, 05:28:05 pm »

All

i have been passed this stunning Maxwell Hemmens "twin twin" set up to clean, check over and make some minor repairs (replace gauge glass etc)

this was custom built by Hemmens to fit a caldercraft Imara twin screw tug, so the engines are spaced for same. it is gas fired and comes with its original gas container..  and heres the crux, it has only used 3/4 of that container when it was first bought 20 years ago, so genuinely no more than an hours run time

fortunately it was stored in a well oiled condition, the engines turn freely though a little bit "old oil" if you know what i mean

the owner has had a bad do and 2 years off work due to ill health and has asked me to find out what its worth on the open market he is going to sell the engine and the kit which is painted and ready to put together

i am honestly just helping out a good friends Dad here, there isn't a penny in it for me!  would appreciate some honest advice

hope this is ok to post

thanks

I was recently in discussion with someone in a similar situation, in that they had a beautifully built Imara with a twin engine Cheddar set up. Unfortunately, the market for such a model is tiny and this chap was struggling to find a buyer.

With regard to that set up, I think the owner would be much better selling the model and the steam plant separately. Recently a complete Hemmens V4 plant sold on ebay for over a grand, the same owner sold a three cylinder MH&B plant for a similar amount. Sadly I doubt either plant will get installed in models, although I could be well wide of the mark.

I think I would separate that, the engines are worth having on there own, or sell one engine and boiler and the other separately. lovely set up though, but may not appeal to all as it is.

It would be so sad to see this plant split up as it is a superb installation.  The caton engines are twin piston valve engines so should be pretty good on steam consumption as well as being powerfull and manoevreable.  This is such a beautiful piece but unfortunately it probably will never meet it's real value.

I would put the engines in the range of 350 to 400 each, possibly the top end as they are in such good condition, and the Caton boiler has to be worth 450-500.  You could also argue that as a one off plant specifically tailored for a model it has more value but then there would also be those who would argue that it is too specific and a buyer may well end up having to adjust the layout to suit a different hull.

As always it's what you can get for it and in the current financial climate perhaps the money isn't out there for things such as this but it would have to be worth in the region of 13 to 1400 pounds.  I would certainly never consider anything less than a thousand but it is really worth more than that.

This is the type of thing that shoule be sold through a specialist auction outlet with a realistic reserve on it.

It may be interesting to compare the fact that I spent 750.00 pounds on my Caton 'V' four a few years ago and I thought that was a very good price.

What is interesting though with this layout is that both engine speeds are controlled by a single steam regulating valve but they are independant as far as direction.  It would be ideal to have both independently controlled for speed but you would then have four servos to control the engines, two proportional and two switched.

Fabulous plant though, I can just enjoy looking at it.

Can I purchase this boiler and engines?
How would I open negotiations to be able to do so?
Regards.

Steam Head..........I don't think you would have a problem opening negotations with  dbninja ...provided you understand the potential value/cost per component as suggested by member 'bunkerbarge'

Naturally the seller will view this as a 'market rate' by a respected & experienced member & moderator of this WEB site

two engines @ 400 Pounds [each]
one boiler @ 500 Pounds
one dissasembly charge @ 20 Pounds [est]
one packing charge @ 20 Pounds [est]
one consolidated parcel postage to OZ including insurances ........150 Pounds [est]

So ....[400+400+500+20+20+150] = 1490 UK Pounds

With the UK Pound hovering @ $1.74 AUD...........would cost say $2592.60 AUD......... O0......good luck........Derek

Steam Head I would suggest that you send either a PM or an e-mail to dbninja and ask him what his intentions are.

As Peter says simply click on thier name and it takes you to thier profile.  Once there you will see a label for sending a PM, click that and the box opens up allowing you to send the message.
