Model Boat from Paper Mache
« on: June 15, 2010, 10:09:02 am »

:-)I have made a balsa plug of a rowing boat and I now want to create the actual boat from paper Mache.
Having tried using torn newspaper and flower/water paste, when fully dried it does not come away from the plug without tearing.
Anyone got any suggestions or do you think a plug could be formed from Plasticine.
Many thanks,
Ceres.

Make sure your plug is highly polished on top of the 2 pack gloss paint you should be using, then give the plug a mist spraying of Trex or another sprayable cooking oil.  ok2
As you're making paper hulls and not fibreglass, the plug surface doesn't need to be like a mirror, but it helps.
Cheers

Another option: wrap the plug with clingfilm.

Any of the above should work, but remember that flour/water paste was what was used pre-polycell to fasten wallpaper to walls, so a layer of something is needed.

All the release ideas are excellent :} It is Mayhem after all!

Suggestion for glue:  use diluted emulsion paint - its an acrylic and when hard is waterproof thereafter

and with a gold-coloured* coat

*my style advisor buys matchpots - I get to use them up
Came out very well, but I confess that I used a layer of epoxy/finishing cloth for the final  (outside) layer

In fact you can use any glue, so long as you waterproof well enough
