i always use direct drive shafts, for final drives..it takes ample of space..can i make a 90 degree shifter that found in out boards..?..is it feasible to use in heavy models..?

you can use a similar system to outboards .. might be worth while looking at flexi shafts if space is as a premium

Many tugs and large ships are now using Schottel and steering pods.
Perhaps building something like that is what you are thinking?
