whats the burning smell? aaargghhh :(
« on: November 13, 2010, 02:41:51 pm »

Took the boat out the other day, tested it in my shed to make everything was working ok before driving off to the lake, got to the lake,  carried boat to lake side, switched Transmitter on, switched boat on, smoke then starts to come out of the esc. Not a Happy person :(
its running a Barracuda brushed motor, A Viper 20 amp esc with a 15 amp fuse fitted between the battery and the esc, the battery is a 12volt 7amp hour one, The fuse DID NOT BLOW. the only major change to last time I used the boat was I had charged the battery, (and yes I have checked to see if I connected the right way round)
I just hope it hasn't fried the receiver as well.

But has anyone got any ideas what happened? should I be using a higher amp rated esc?
help, its been quite nice today and I can't get out to play  {:-{

I always include a fuse between the motor and the ESC. That way the fuse will hopefully blow BEFORE the ESC :-))

Sounds like an internal failure of the  ESC, probably the BEC circuit which would not need to draw 15 amps to create smoke.

A fuse between the ESC and motor will not protect the circuit if an ESC internal fault occurs. with the possibility then of damaging the battery as well.

Do you know the in water running current of your set-up.

Contact Mtroniks, and see if they will inspect or replace the unit.

They replaced one of mine...  :-))

I should have made it clear that I fuse both sides of the ESC.

Barrie,
Is it a new ESC as these did have a problem with internal shorts a few years ago.
They were just changed 1 for 1.

I had used the prop before,  and the set up just a week or so ago, The only difference to the set up was I had charged the battery, and tidied up the layout using a extension to the rudder servo so that power wires and servo control wires ran on different sides of the hull, the smoke was the white type with a great smell of ozone. I may well invest in a amp display that I have seen a few here mention, but as its not a particuly fast boat I would have thought the ampage wouldn't be that high.

(replacement esc will have a fuse installed between esc and motor as well, thanks for the tip)
