Machine Cut CAD Designed Styrene, Can It Be DOne
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:31:39 AM »

Hello All,

I am a CAD Technician and I have also built model ships using my work skills, mostly to add Photo Etch components. I have wondered about the ability to have the same thing done in Styrene Sheet, Is it possible to have it laser cut or drilled out in the pattern I design? I am not looking for 3D Milling but to have the formers, walls and portholes etc cut out.

Can it be done in the UK and who does it?

Thanks in advance

Hi John,
Thats a nice easy question for a Sunday morning.
Simple answer is ....YES
Now to avoid infringing this forums rules on advertising you could try a Google search using the following words

LASER CUT MODEL BOAT

Hope to chat soon.

Kim

Wow...you seem like a charmer Kim...

The idea of posting here is that I have done plenty of that particular search and many others its just that it all seems to pop up with kits that include laser cut components as opposed to the service or suggestions on how to provided the template to the company, I thought that by asking in such a group I might get the attention of someone who has had it done and might be able to offer suggestions, especially to a company who might know the little ins and outs of ship modelers (low production numbers as opposed to 100's of runs of the item, etc)

I did not think that asking for a suggestion to a service provider was against the rules, I would accept a PM of same to avoid any publication or advertising....

I do appreciate you posting as I have seen from your other "posts" a great topic that seems to be what I was looking for, from that post it seems you actually have/offer the service I was looking for. Do you ?

Regards

Hi John,
I have now reached my 25 posts on this forum and hope I'm right in thinking it means i can now advertise openly (My apologise if i have miss read the rule book :)  )

Ok yes i can offer the services that you require from one off's to batch runs.

Regarding the ins and outs -  the drawings you use for your Photo etching will probably be suitable for use in Laser cutting (.Dxf, .CDR, .PLt etc)
Our machines can run in Vector (for cutting) or Raster for engraving and you can stack your drawings in Layers should you want a 3d effect)

It is, as your probably aware, a big subject and the first step in answering your questions more accurately would be to send a drawing through then give me a call to discuss.
Hope that helps a bit more
Regards,
Kim

Hi Kim

You seem to be exactly as I suspected and I am very very disappointed as a consumer & fellow hobby enthusiast.

I have to say I feel your reply to my original query was childish and feel worse about the other thread where you unwarrantedly question the honesty of another trader. It is not the kind of thing I would have hoped to find anywhere a new member is asking about something that they genuinely need help with and have genuinely researched through Google etc.

As a business do you think you would have been better served by even Private Messaging me with details not yet welcome openly on the board. How do you think I would have felt as a customer to have a trader take the time to give me a personal message with the ability to offer the exact service I was looking for as opposed to the childish offering of the search terms I surely could not have figured out myself?

To find you are another trader is incredibly sad...I think the basics of trading is that a promoted hobby sells better. I also believe that a “reputation” of childish and unwarranted posts is really un attractive as a consumer.

Thanks for your help in pointing out other traders offering your service
Regards

Sorry Talisman but i think you brought that upon yourself.

As an obvious trader, from your past comments about water jet cutting on nother post, it is a simple message really.

to paraphrase some famous yank........

"It's not what this forum can do for you, but what you can do for this forum."

It would be simpler for you to register your interests on this forum as a TRADER and then there would be less unpleasantness all around, without the need for underhanded dealings that get every ones backs up.
neil.
