Best adhesive for deck planking
« on: May 27, 2011, 12:48:47 am »

Good evening gentlemen, I have started to plank the deck of my Victoria steam launch. What glue is best, cyano or aliphatic? I have tried cyano, but have abandoned it on the grounds that I have stuck myself to the job, stuck the job to myself, got planks stuck to the bench, the dog, the parrot me (again) I just don't get on with the stuff. I have got some Superphatic, a bottle of aliphatic and some 5 min epoxy. I humbly appeal to the great and the wise for guidance, before I go and buy a sheet of Fablon ( only joking) which one will have the best waterproofing qualities?
Many thanks
Nick >>:-(

Nick - a few questions..... {:-{

1. are you using wooden planks onto a full wooden deck?...
2. will you varnish/polyurethane/wax the final planked surface?....

If the answer is YES to both.......plain white PVA glue is fine....you van also use a few drops of superglue to act as instant tacks whilst the PVA dries  :-)) ....Derek

I use waterproof PVA. If you leave it for a minute or two before actually sticking the planking down, it gets quite tacky and dries faster.

i tend to use an Alyphatic quick grab resin.it's waterproof and very strong.
i also colour it with matt black enamel paint in small quantities and when set, it simulates the caulking between the planks

Planking is usually applied to a sheet sub deck. Otherwise there is  a much greater likelihood of leaks. Sub decks can be of very thin ply so should not pose a problem. No point in doing things the hard way!

Evening Gents, well, the planking exercise is all but over, a few tatty bits around the edges, but I think I will get away with it, and I am reasonably satisfied with my efforts. I certainly don't want to strip it all off and start again! I used aliphatic pva from Deluxe Materials in the end, good stuff, dries nice and quickly, but still gives time for adjustment and cleans off with a damp cloth (before it sets). in an attempt to be 'arty' I put 2 runs of 1/2 mm maple I had left over from a Nelsons Navy kit between the planks, doesn't show up to well in the photos, but it is there, about 3/4 inches either side of the centre line. Heres a few phots of my efforts for your comments. Thanks for all the advice,
Nick. :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi ya there Matt.H

If you are planking a hull then standard PVA glue will do the job - such as EVOSTIK weatherproof job - or and aliphatic glue would do even better.

Have a look at Masterclass build either the Cervia tug or the Spashett - majority of the hulls in the masterclass were planked using standard PVA.

Only use the Ausies West System if you have a canny deep pocket as in MikeK's :-) cos he must be loaded :-)

Hi,
The WEST SYSTEM was developed and marketed in the USA, long before it was available in Australia and NZ
