First Build......Which Kit?
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:11:22 am »

I am just about ready to purchase my first kit to build, and I have decided I would like to build a Anti Submarine Boat or Motor Torpedo Boat.

I'm looking at the Dean's Marine range and they list three models I'm interested in :-

MGB - 77
MTB - 385
MTB 488

Which of these kits, if any would you recommend for a beginner, or what would be your alternative recommendation.

If anyone has built these kits, were they straightforward?...

Looking forward to your responses.

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan, having done several Deans kits I would not say these are suitable for the beginner as the instructions, which are rubbish.do not tie up with the drawing and the part numbers are normally different on the drawings and parts.

For a person with some experience and a lot of patience they make a nice model.

How about one of these ?

I have to agree the deans kits are not for beginners you really need some skill behind you to get them done, trust me i'm doing one now and even with my years this models a pain in my backside!

Before the teddies and dummies start flying Alan, How much beginner? Have a look on Dodgy's site :- http://modelboats.hobby-site.com/  and look at the "Fireboat" section. Full plans and instructions and someone in Canada making a double sized one in Balsa (Eat your heart out Mr Aerokit)

Enough detail not to get bored with as a first attempt and a model of a fast "Patrol" boat.

Hi ya AlanT

Do you have the June 2011 issue of Model Boats?    In there, there is a free plan for a Vosper MTB by Glynn Guest and it is a very pleasing model to build.  Its also quite an easy to build model.  Up to now, it has cost me in the region of about £55-£60 and that is including everything but the radio.  So, material for the build, paints, prop shaft, rudder, coupling, speed controller and battery.....well worth considering - comparing it to a kit to build.

If I might add to John's post - Glynn's designs are always practical and straightforward and every bit as easy (if not more!) than a kit. Also, if you can get hold of a copy, the recent Model Boats Construction Special (which I edited) has lots of advice for the newcomer to the hobby plus another free MTB plan!

PS - I should have remembered but Glynn's Higgins Hellcat MTB is now available as a wood pack from MyHobbyStore - have a look here: http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/search.asp?k=higgins+hellcat&=

This might be the best of all worlds for you!

Thank you Gents for you replies, very interesting and informative.

I will not persue the Deans Marine route, a great shame as their boats look so good.....Is nothing being done to correct problems with these kits?...

I have a copy of the Construction Special that Colin edited, and very useful it was....Although I am still a little confused by some of the terminology used......"Wood pack ?" Is this all the wood precut to the required shape or is it just sections of wood that you use to make your own parts?...
I would love to build the PT boat in the Construction Special, but I think I would struggle at the moment.....I really want a full kit, with some form of preformed hull with good instructions and details of what motor to fit and r/c fitting guidelines....I guess I keep looking.
Once again thank you for your input....
Regards
Alan

PS I will be picking up my first completed boat next week, so I can learn the basics....Really looking forward to it.

hi there Alan

Strongly advise you to read the articles in model boats about the Vosper build.  There is a lot of information in there about motors etc. and build materials.

As far as radio gear is concerned, you just have to read through some of the postings on this forum and they will give you a good idea of what radio gear to purchase

If you also have a look in the masterclass section on this forum, plan for beginners for the Fairey Swordsman, this will give you an idea of the type of builds Glynn does.

hi

Just come back from the lake after doing sea trials on the Vosper from Glynn Guest's plans and boy is it FAST - think I might have to chop the rudder down ...... model was very very responsive and tried to turn itself inside out ..... nearly had the model upside down once or twice ..... couple of pics cos I know Dicky likes to see the pics :-)

Hi Dicky my mate

Got a bit sick of trying to get this SKYPE to work - so with me spare time I thought I would build the MTB - in a couple of hours just to pass the time of day %% {-) {-) {-)
