Salvage in Trincomalee:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-43607838

I once visited Trinco - but only once.

not being cynical.............but can't see the point really.............many ships were lost during the conflict and to history, she wasn't any more special than other similar merchant vessels so why this one. {:-{

Probably more to get rid of the obstruction now that it has rusted so much.
"Prior to the ship's refloat, the damaged sunken vessel was used as a pier for other naval ships in the harbour"  (BBC)
Might have been an exercise for the removal team.
Cannot see it being restored or put on display.

From our ABC
"In September 2017 Sri Lanka's navy was tasked with refloating the wreck — which was submerged more than 10 metres underwater — to make room for expanding berthing facilities in the harbour.

The Eastern Naval Command unit carried out the task by strengthening the ship's internal framework and building an artificial side to "dewater" the ship and recover lost buoyancy."

That's a huge chunk of pre-nuclear steel - worth a fortune in scrap.

My information is that it is the pre nuclear steel i.e. sunken WW2 ships that is valued.  When calibrating modern medical equipment like MRI scanners then this kind of un radiated metal is needed to set up the equipment.

ahh, I had read about that some years ago regarding the salvaging of the scuttled ships of Scapa Flow, and being of pre nuclear era, but didn't put 2 and 2 together and even think about that explanation.

Can understand now the reasons for her salvage.

Top marks to the Scottish Government
Ministers who gave the go-ahead.
It will at least give the families closure
on the tragedy.
Can't imagine the English lot paying for
similar incidents.

Hi all, apparently this menu was the first meal ever served on the Titanic, if you note the date she was on one day of sea trials before taking on passengers.  The meal must have been served to the crew, or at least the officers.
One of the items on the menu, Bovin potatoes  has made a few people wonder what it was.
Feel sorry for the golden plover though, currently under threat from changes of land use and now has Titanic partly tp blame for its' demise!

Hi, done a bit more research and Bovin (as in  bovine, beef etc.) may well have been poatoes boiled in water with bovril in it. I don't think I shall bother with that one!

Sorry Paul I think boiled, otherwise they are called roast potatoes!
I agree with your obvious pleasure though, I find a light boiling ot of the spuds and then a shake to get them fluffy and then roast, my family love them.  I recently did this in Oz so the secret is out.

Sorry Dave but I think you are way off beam there see: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,60803.msg641125.html#new
The likelihood is that the UK taxpayer will end up with a substantial profit from the event overall. You need to look at the bigger picture.
