Hi Russ,

more by accident I came past this thread in the forum section of Shipspotting.com.

It is about a grand (1/48th) free lance tanker model from scratch which started as a bulker.
But then the builder decided to convert her into a tanker because of all the challenging piping works on deck.

I thought this would interest you too.

Ok I couldnt get my head around how to assemble the large containers so for now I have taken a different route and using pipework only, Eventually i will make a seperate deck with the gas containers so they will be interchageable.  I sourced a toy helicopter out of my sons toy box, stripped it and resprayed in Coastguard colours.

Next step will be to make all the walkways...

During short sunny breaks in the weather I have built the walkway around the superstructure and sprayed it all with satin white, funnel exhausts are fitted and these have pipes running down into the hull ready for the smoke machine, Matt vinyl has been cut into squares/rectangles to simulate the window openings and I have made up a forward mast with working mast light, I have also fitted the anchor tubes and hopefully I will have working anchors, cracking on with detail work now..

Roy

The crew figure is just a 1/72 German navy figure that I am using to gauge  certain parts of the build, stanchions, railings etc..

Looks a fantastic build this, I'm considering one myself when my current builds are finished. I was looking at the models by design hull...but could anybody shed any light on this for me?

yes adam.....I made the plug originally a few years ago and Dave Metcalf had the plug moulded into a hull......it was to be used by a student at the London college of Science and technology for his 3rd year degree course for tank testing into why the actual ship the MV Prestige ( google it) split in two halves in the Bay of Biscay and dumped 80000 tons of oil into the north Atlantic before she sank.
the Hull was built from shipyard plans to 1:100 scale......don't know much more about her except that the plug was made in three weeks of a lot of sweat and grime .......luckily the summer was decent and sunny that year, lol

Hi Neil, Many thanks for that reply - much appreciated!

I'm glad you mentioned the scale, as I would be making it to 1/96th when I do get around to ordering it! (and hiding the bill from SWMBO!).
Thanks for the info. I had heard of the MV Prestige but never really looked it up before now.

Hi there folks, just an update. The big one is now back with it's creator. I'll have it up and running for this season, how I'm going to carry it is another matter, think I'll be making a big ply box soon...

Hi there guys, there's not been huge progress done on it since the last posts by 6705russell.

I'll be doing some more work to it over the weekend and figuring out just what's left to be done. Mainly it's small detail work and the internal wiring, both of which have been started.

The main point of note is that with work done it's now going to be 1/72 scale as it's nearly impossible to revert to 1/96 with work done but it looks great on 1/72 scale.

Of course my main plan was to have interchangeable tops for it, which will still be happening but priority is to get it finished as the supertanker, get it on the water and use it! Plans are already made for the container ship top for it, drew them up yesterday... O0

Yep Mick, cars are never quite big enough!

At 8' it's not practical to wedge it in the car, I managed to scrape the paintwork just picking it up yesterday. So I can see a day spent making a sturdy but not to heavy (queue laughter) box to go on the car roof. I'll be making it big enough so it will be able to carry 9'6"  Prinz Eugen too, not both at once though, lol.

I'll probably post some more pics later or tomorrow,

Dave.  :-)) :-))

Looking forward to an update Dave.

My next project is based on the hull from Models By Design - after i've atleast nearly completed my current builds!
I have the same problem transporting my 1/96th HMS Illustrious - she's a fairly big girl and "just" fits in the car - but it's tempting fate for sure! I'll scratch it or break something one day if i'm not careful!

Good afternoon all, some pictures of the current state of play as promised.

I've finished the railings on the stbd side today, they just need painting and fixing in place. I've taken off the L N G lettering on the sides as they won't be appropriate when it's in the container ship guise.

I'm going to do more of the smaller detail parts this afternoon. I also need to sort out the points for towing her, as I always said I'd be happy for tugs to have a play with her, so long as they're careful!

Thanks guys, quick question for the tug boys.

Is it best for it to have 2 towing bollards, port and starboard on the bow and stern for you to hook onto or a single central one on bow and stern? There's nothing fixed in place yet for towing so am just getting some ideas.

Dave.

Some more done today, built the bridge roof and made up some radars and aeriels, radars will rotate when I get a motor. I'll be getting some more 1/72 scale fittings at the next show I get to. Finished the drop lifeboat structure on the stbd side. I've cut out thin sheets of styrene for the walkways around the bridge, sprayed them and stuck them down. Much easier than masking it off and painting it!

I've ordered the 4 esc's today I'll need, 3 for the thrusters and 1 for main drive. Hopefully they'll arrive to be fitted next weekend.

I am so glad to see you have it back where it belongs, I know you went though lots of up' & down's. It must feel great to be getting near launch time. In the end I am sure it was all worth the effort, Mick B.
