anyone bought one of these speed controllers?
« on: March 13, 2007, 05:15:44 pm »

i need your help again folks, i bought a speed controller and two motors for my destroyer from my local model shop, that specialises in boats. i wired it all up, the two motors in parallel and it seemed to work fine. then i was fitting all the electronic gear into the boat and gave it a final test and my speed controller started smoking (heavily). i could post all the details and specs later if u need them for a diagnosis!

anyway i need a new one so i came across this, any comments?????

There's a thread in the Electrics & Electronics section discussing these controllers.

Cables connected to the wrong poles, or a short between pos and neg!  Red should be red to the red on the speed controller and black should be black, this must always be connected to the same coloured terminals on the battery. If there is a short in the speed controller, fair enough, the maker should either repair or replace, but, if it is what I call a" NUMPTY" fault, it is the said "NUMTY'S" fault.

sounds to me you have reverse polaritied the battery to the esc by putting red wire to black tab and black wire to red tab.  (hence me crimping tamiya connectors to my lead acid batteries - even the charger has a tamiya plug on it), no fear of cross wiring :)

that comes to a silly simple operator mistake.

Hi,

got one of them off E-Bay and found it OK but make sure you get the connections right as they've used black and red for the motor side as well, get it wrong and its knackered. Mark those motor cables with some yellow electricians insulation tape and make sure you follow the directions on the label and double check everthing before applying power.

Glad I found this thread as I just bought one on ebay the other day.  Thought that I'd take a chance on it.  It's to power my Revell Flower Class Corvette.  As for the wiring of the thing, is it not as shown in the photo?  The inner pair the motor and the outer to the battery?

Mike

Added:  I just searched ebay and I see what can happen as the wires in some photos of this esc show red/black/blue/yellow and others show only pairs of red/black.  Very easy to make a simple yet expensive error.

I'm hoping that mine will arrive before the coming weekend so that I can test it.  If it works as claimed I may buy a few more.  I need a pair of nice esc's for a project thats been hanging from the rafters of my garage since around 1992.  It's a 9 1/2 foot long model of CV-6 USS Enterprise.  A friend built it while convalescing after being wounded in Vietman.  Needs a complete going over as he built it for static display.

Hi Mike K,

your dead right about the wiring but as I said be very carefull and check you've got it right this one's a bit strange for using black/red for the motor side wiring, there's many an experienced model boater knacked a perfectly good  electronic speed controller through not paying attention. I seen one recently at the water try and sail his tranny instead of his yacht. :o

Well, I wish that I could contribute something constructive here but as my esc has still not arrived I have nothing to offer.  I emailed the seller in China and he replied with some cock and bull story that my esc packaging was damaged in shipment and returned to them and that they are now out of stock.  Cynic that I am, I logged onto ebay and did a search and noticed that they had a number of onging auctions for the very same model of esc!!  I propmty emailed them back letting them know what I'd seen on ebay and they said that they were going to revise thier listings.  They also noted that they'd be back in stock in the next week or so.  Again, being the cynic that I am when it comes to dealing with vendors in China, I'll be expecting it around the month of June.

I use Eltronize in the boats and LRP in the cars never any probs. But if you have reversed the polarity it will be fried. I am really looking in to a ESC with reverse polarity protection and suggest thats the way to go.

can u ave a look  inside to see any faults ?

I have about eight of these ESC's and have not yet had a problem and they are also waterproof, I had a rollover and sinking all of a metre off the waters edge and retrieval was simple, drained the water out washed the recieiver in Metho, and back in the water in half an hour with no radio problems.............

I have one of these from ebay, haven't tested it yet though sorry! I have put a tamiya connector onto the battery wires so that is something you will have to buy if you plan to use battery packs. Should have everything wired up this week after painting. May buy another later on this year.

Mine finally arrived today.  I put it into a small boat that was ready to go and I was not impressed.  Speed modulation was inconsistent meaning that it seemed to hunt around for a speed setting event though I was not moving the throttle stick.  Low speed control seemed poor as well.  I found it hard to maintain low rpm's.  To get the lowest speed possible you have to move the stick through about 1/3 stick travel for the esc to come on and then back down until just before it shuts down.  Even then, mine went to neutral/off after a few seconds at low speed.  It seemed that reverse has much better slow speed control.  Five minutes into t he run I lost motor control and only had steering/BEC.

I wondered if the motor had anything to do with it so I soldered the motor leads to a larger 550 sized motor.  The motor in the test boat was a small 140 size motor in a Graupner gearbox.   Seemed to work much better on the bench with the larger motor in that it actually came on to command.  I'm going to try to have the hull of the Corvette in the water this weekend so I'll possibly have something to report on this esc.  I'm hoping that my results are positive as the price is right and I need a pair for the big CV-6 Enterprise on four 600 size motors.

I wonder if those of you who have found this esc satisfactory might elaborate on your motor and battery choices.

Regards,

Hi Mike_K
In my Revell Corvette I have the following:

Deans Marine Kyte motor.

Marine 5 speed controller from Deans

7.2v Nicad battery or 6v Nicad battery. 6v is fine in dead calm but really needs 7.2v in wind and waves.

Speed and rudder control is spot on.

I also have a 3 bladed Sitek prop same diameter as kit from Westbournes.

My Robbe Scheutze has twin motors and a Overlander 50amp esc Size 42 x 47 x 13mm
Unit Weight :82g
Use: Boats & Car upto 50Amp
Configuration: 5 - 10 cells
Charge: 6 - 12 v systems
Discharge: 50A forward/20A reverse

Very smooth control. Cant fault it.

Yeah I have one off those units. It's powering my 10ft containership using car batteries as power source.using the trim on my radio unit ,
I can get a slow tickover but do get the whine from the unit ( and me at times ) ! It is adequate for what I use it for and was cheap . Thats me !!

Hi all i have two, well one now, as I did the same thing, burnt it out, turned out that a strand of wire from the pos touched the neg & fizzzzzzzz anyway, that was that. But before hand it worked a treat & in my opinion damn good value for money, I've just ordered another from HK & inc postage still only £13.00, you cant go wrong for that can you.

The ebay link is no longer valid.

Are these the blue anodized ones? If so, another person on another forum spoke pretty highly of them. He said he had excellent luck with them.

I bought three off of ebay. One for the port motor, one for the starboard motor, and one more because they are from China. I haven't had the opportunity to try them out on the 700's yet.

If they are the ones I am thinking of they only deliver 50% power astern.

hi there
i have bought 4 of these esc's ,but i only have 3 left,i had the same prob with one of them,
i placed one in my springer tug,it was ok at first , then one day i plugged battery in
went forward about a foot and then smoke started to pour out.
The battery connectors i use make it impossible to reverse polarity (ec3 connectors),
so i put it down to a dodgy esc,
the other 3 are still working perfect.
