Finally finished! RNLB Duke of York.
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:02:19 pm »

Only took 2 1/2 years, this one!

Bought off Ebay, back at the beginning of 2009, this is what it looked like then :

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16229.msg160280#msg160280

Basically, the hull mouldings and about half a dozen fittings.

It was completely stripped out and built back up - it still only has about 8 or 9 commercial bits on it, everything else is scratch built.

Many thanks to Neil (nhp651) for help and producing it in the first place.

Criticisms welcome!

Lance

don't worry about that Mick.......i converted my own boat 3 times before I sold the prototype......it was the most named lifeboat in christendome,  {-) {-) {-)

I think that model has been built as everyone in the class so far......great to see,  :-)) :-))

Ok then, I'l criticise  it,
IT'S TOO DAMN GOOD !
Seriously its a fine piece of work,
your patience has been rewarded.
Please take it to some shows so other builders can drool over it.

Excellent build! Same type as the old Fleetwood boat the letitia Russell, I think. Saw her launched a few times down the old slipway!

yes, you are right Justboatonic.....

the Anne Letitia Russell was the longest serving 41' Watson at any station in the British Isles.........she beat Whitby's Mary Anne Hepworth (same class of Lifeboat) by about 4 months service time according to official records.

Sadly Mary Ann Hepworth is just about the only vessel of her class that remains in almost original condition and has been seen on "Heartbeat" and "The Royal" TV progs numerous times because of her condition..........the ALR as she was unaffectionally known as is now a "cabin cruiser" with a hideous cabin based around Barry, south wales, and was last known  as "Angela"

Anne Letitia Russell as she is today.........yuck!!!!

I have to agree with Neil, they've totally ruined ALR. Why did they put that hideous cabin on her? Such a shame the classic lines have been destroyed, should have been preserved as she was. I wonder what the folk that served on her think of it, probably unrepeatable in public! Dave.  {:-{

how hideous. the only good thing is that she is still afloat, and being used, proving just how good a design she was.

If anyone wanted model as she is now they must be mentally unstable or unable build their own due to their straight jacket!  :o

The reason ex RNLI vessels are turned into ugly ducks when sold out of service
(I'm tallking about double enders at this time) is the fact that as a cruising boat
they very seaworthy (obviously) but to live on they have no headroom to make
any decent accommodation.
Therefore the only way is 'up'
The RNLI would have dfificulty in selling them off if no-one was willing to take on
the gigantic task of converting one to their own designs.
There are only so many harbours that can accommodate a 'Mary Anne Hepworth'
I was involved with rebuilding the Charles Dibden from the frames up (A 42ft Beach Launched Watson)
Walmer Station It doesn't look much like a lifeboat but is still afloat and not firewood.
