that bow looks like it means business Mick....very powerfull and up to the job.
the planking looks superb.

Hi Mick,

Am quite intrigued by the diagonal hull covering, what type of wood and thickness/ width did you use for the job ?
Quite impressive end result I must say.

Thanks for your clarifications

looks a very beautiful model Rottweiler.

I look forward to seeing this finished. Is it going to be a sailing model. I hope so.

Not nearly enough of the older war ships sailing on lakes these days.

Remember as a lad going with my parents to somewhere on the east coast and watching some war ships battling it out on a lake in a sunny park one Sunday. It was great fun to watch.

Best wishes. Jim.

Blimey! Are they still going  and still doing it? It was more than 60 years ago that I saw that.

Are they still the same boats, surely not!

Anyway thanks for the information Ned as I couldn't remember where it was.

Crabbersnipe,
The planks were individually cut from a strip of 1/16 inch thick spruce, into 3/4 inch strips, which were steamed, glued and pinned into place.

I am glad this topic has been refreshed. Your hull looks splendid Mick  :-)) Really smooth. The superstructure bits are looking good as well, I can't wait to see your progress on this beauty.

Thank you for your comment Ballastanksian.
A few more photos of the start of the tripod mast.
This consisted of 3 pieces of ramin dowel rod,cut to size and two pieces chamfered at the top,to allow them to butt up
The next exercise was to drill 76 holes in each of the two mast legs,to take the rungs of the ladder. Its probably got another name but you will know what I am talking about!Next job was to rough cut 76 rungs out of brass rod,and file them and bend them into the shape of rungs, and then painting them, first an undercoat and then a topcoat. You will see how small they were by the comparative size of the 1p coin.Next stage was to paint  the legs of the mast in grey. Each of the 76 rungs, had then to be carefully glued, and pushed into the drilled holes at a slight angle.
May I say this was very difficult and time consuming, for me because at the time,I had started getting very shaky hands.Sorry about the blurred last photo in this batch

Hi ya Mick

Nice to see you back building :-)  it is looking just the ticket now :-) smart as a dart as they say.

How are you getting on working with Lithoplate?  me> I couldn't stick using the stuff - or should I say I couldn't get glue to stick it - the way I wanted it to.

Thanks John
I found lithoplate quite easy to cut and shape, but as you say glueing it was something else.I use one of the thicker superglues, with a zapper so that it goes off even quicker, and find it worked quite well.I must admit,I did discard most of it and used plasticard wherever I could.
Later on, a friend who did most of the actual superstructure for me used ordinary card.

I am following this article,I have seen this model that was partly built, I'm just think there is a man who is madly into his lifeboats and now your going to actually finish this model off I will look forward to the finished warship when it is done as it will be different for someone who's into his RNLI in a big way,so carry on the good work mick until it's done

a few photos of the construction of the mainmast spotting top.Again using the variety of materials mentioned before i.e. Plasticard, lithoplate, brass rod,and thinner brass wire.
ok I admit my accuracy is not as precise as it should be,and my cutting out leaves a lot to be desired, but this really is the best I can do,and if it looks ok,it will do Im afraid,is the opinion I have.

Nothing about a capital ship is easy so don't worry as the whole effect will be amazing. On the water where it will be in its element it will look blooming marvellous. I look forward to your posts seeing all the bits you're building as those towers and masts are super complex models in their own right.

As we say, it is your hobby enjoy it how you want to Mick.

Although looking rough,I can assure you that at a slightly later date, everything was straightened, filled and faired, and tidied up!

Looking good Mick
I know the effort you're putting in to the details as I've just done the same on my Dreadnought and it's surprising the amount of detail that you can keep seeing in the pictures!
Looking forward to seeing the next instalment  :-))

Excellent progress capturing the complexity of a large structure way up in the sky. I am amazed that the top mast is wood.
