Would the topmast being fabricated from wood [non conductive] have any thing to do with EMF [or some form of electromagnetism] from the vessel and hence the gun director mounted atop?..ie., being above potential of the ships earth signal?.......

Remember ships of these years had tons of large diameter copper core cable embedded just below the deck and circling the entire perimeter of the deck for de-gaussing the hull  .......

Perhaps, as I read that some warships had brass bridge structures to reduce the effect of the ships structure on its compasses.

back to the build.
A  different view of the Starfish platform, and the Mast pulleys for the Main derrick.
The pulleys were made from scraps of brass, and the pulley wheels were made by reversing dressmakers pop together joiners

That is a smart idea using the poppers. One for the hints and tips book.

Your work is great as usual. I look forward to your next installment.

These next few are of the Main Derrick assembly.Again using scraps of brass sheet, rods, even the brass pins from 3 pin sockets.A friend turned down the shape for me on his lathe. The main mast section is made from stained and varnished hardwood dowel. The pulley wheel, again is made as above.
The first photo is of the assembled gooseneck
The second photo is of the pulley housing
and the last is the whole thing assembled, before siting on the mast

If that Derrick is to go by, this is going to be a fabulous model! Part ship modelling part model engineering.

The Crane housing was badly fabricated from a few available parts in the workshop.Mainly plasticard, more poppers and plenty of glue.

The main jib was pre made and bought from a firm which sadly no longer exists J R Haynes, and didnt he produce some wonderful items.
The jib was soldered together, just preheating and running the solder into the joins.

I meant to post this much earlier in the build!
Here she is,1st time afloat. One full size 12v car battery, and approx 88 lbs of lead ballast.
I think she looks the part, and I cant wait to see the finished model in the water.

We just wait with baited breath for the next instalment with eagerness.

Very much enjoying your build, and I think you are yourself.

Sometimes we hang back a bit and comment on a finished subassembly or significant milestone. It is easy to comment on every shave of wood removed or swipe of the sandpaper. Don't worry, you have a group of Capital ship nerds hanging on your every photo upload!!!! I love that crane and agree that J.R.Haynes do/did some lovely fittings. Your work with the poppers and styrene will make the whole crane excellent.

My next attempt was the spotting top. This was made using Lithoplate,Milliput, and Plasticard.
It proved to be a big challenge!
The first photo is the plasticard basis

Ramilles was built by Harland and Wolf at their Govan yard formerly owned by Beardmore. It was extended and this may be what we see in the picture?

Lovely image showing how large the structures they fitted a'top a ship were.

Lovely crane Mick!

Never heard of Harland and Wolf being involved before! She was certainly built by Beardmore,on the Clyde. The Beardmore Hotel is very near to where the yard was,and Tom McKendricks Sculptureof Ramillies is as near as possible to what was the main entrance to the yard.
May I respectfully suggest you perhaps read the book "Beardmore Built" by my good friend and Author Ian Johnston.

Mick...this is still a fascinating image.....we see the stepped walls of the dock and the inland end wall...we also see the line of the hull stern in

What is not shown are any building ancillaries'......the image below is a 100 ton Taylor steam "Fixed Shear Leg" crane from the Alexandria Graving Belfast dockyard in 1889

These are the types machinery that would be needed to complete the construction build ....the image displayed just doesn't support this...

The WIKI story tells of a damaged rudder on her original launching & then being towed elsewhere for fitting out?
