Model Boat Weekend at Action Stations, Portsmouth.
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:54:40 AM »

The Portsmouth Model Boat Display Team are displaying at Action Stations this coming weekend, in the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth. On the water through the day with our main display at 1pm. Extensive static display inside Action Stations.
Viewing the static display will require a valid ticket for the Heritage area, so, not a cheap thing, but if you are planning a visit this coming weekend, look us up.
With apologies to the Navy Days 1962 poster design team....

I know you all want to know how it went over the weekend, dont you?
Good job we took photos!
Our static display upstairs was divided into themes, here we go..

We had an 'in build' section, showing the public what was involved with modelling, Tony Ansell had his Batch 3 Type 22 frigate on the stand, and was working on it throughout the weekend. Nice model. Rob was busy weathering tanks, including an all wood Panzer III build by Derek Matile. One of two built for our Overlord Display. i had a quick go at simulating a burnt out Panzer III just to show off a bit, forgot to photograph it though!

Dereks wonderful Wooden Models....

Every one of these models is hand carved from wood including, HMS Warspite, the Type 22 Frigate, whale and shark, as well as all the tanks, no-one believes the tanks are wooden, so we have promised to run one of Dereks tanks through a band saw before the next display, so they can see the skills involved!!

Harry Pounds Scrap Yard next....

Only kidding Ben :-) Junior Section at the start of the day, much improved as the weekend went on..

The Deep Dive VI is a runner and was displayed with the lid off to show off the WTC. The US Navies latest secret weapon on loan from yours truly.

And finally NOT Bens latest project, but what we can expect to see in the Mast Pond over the summer....

Red Dragon Towing next...

A big Mobile Marine FT-X conversion, a very tidy variation on the Robbe Jan, and a hat pushing a house...

How to approach your project was covered on the next two stands, first Dennis Horne and his models based on ships on which he, and his relatives had served on, along with scale drawings and memorabilia to support this...

A young Dennis in the photograph along with a nice selection of models.

Pat Adair does a nice line in vessels with a local interest, and two of his models on display were the Sealink ferry MV Southsea and the Monitor M33, the original of which is sitting in a drydock by HMS Victory. Displayed with plans, photos and book used as reference, this was a well laid out display.

Next door to this we had a selection of fishing boats, work boats etc, with a nice spread of promotional material care of Mr Ron Dean at Deans Marine, cheers mate!

We are just about at the half way point round our static display, seems like a good time to get my ego trip out of the way...
MOVIE MODELS

Not all my models I must say, however, here we have Silver Surfer ( Ex-Kyosho Surf bum with coat of chrome paint following an overdue hair cut!), Alien Queen, Thunderbird 1, Nautilus ( nice model ), Orca from Jaws, Red October and 633 Squadron Mosquito ( Flimsy connection, but I'm standing by it! ). The Sailing Ship? HMS Dolphin, the only true movie prop, "Run, Fat Boy, Run"?

Great Movie Mistake... Orca has a copy of the book Jaws on the table inside the cabin, its got the cover for Jaws 2 on it. Dont tell anyone, please?

Sailing Ships next, This was the first planned part of the display, involving a walk through with the British Ships on one side and the Franco Spanish ships on the other side. It was intended to draw the public into the display in a pre-determined direction and it seemed to work..

We actually ran out of room to put up all the sailing ships, resulting in the 9' Redoutable staying in the trailer for the weekend and HMS Dolphin being hijacked by the ego maniac on the movie models display.

.
The display narrowed down to our fund raising table, manned throughout the weekend, and raising almost pounds for the team..

The Merchantman/Pirate ship Jessica Marie.

The Phoenix, almost risen..

HMS Ajax, which, due to tax reasons, was the Royal George this weekend.

USS Chesapeake, which this weekend was being French...

And finally, HMS Victory, which was being too big to go up in the lift and proved stuffing heavy for four of us to carry up the stairs..

Lifeboats next, Colin ( HMS Victory builder extraordinaire, good line in rude insults! ) and Vic contributed a pair of 1/16 scale lifeboats as well as a Solent mid build. Plus the molds used to produce them.

Caught off guard, Colin gives some friendly words of advice regarding the use of a snake and where to take it....

Bless!

The most over populated display yet, Modular Construction, my CHANT tanker, loads of information about WWII methods of building in modules, and NO TID TUGS! The excuse for not bringing these little models," we forgot." Fine, more showing off for me!

And what did the TID Tug owners bring instead... a realy nice collection of vintage models, as well as old adverts for kits from the likes of Veron, Aerokits etc. You are forgiven..

The Enemy Below...

Corvettes on top of the table, U-Boat under the table/sea being depth charged with 'Batman' style "KERPOWS" hanging on bits of string, sounds manic, looked great..

We ran out of tables early on, then hijacked a semi circular seating area on which we placed a selection of our WWII vessels.

There may be a KD Perkasa hiding amongst the Vosper MTBs but its all part of the lineage..

HMS Howe, King George V class Battleship.

SMS Scharnhorst in East Asiatic Squadron colours.

Tony Ansells post-refit HMS Hood, as she was projected to have looked if fate had not intervened in her clash with Bismark.

HMS Attacker.

And HMS Howe again with a scattering of WWII memorabilia.

Convoys, Atlantic and Pedestal next. Although we had no room to display the part finished SS Ohio <:(

A selection of 1/48 Flower class Corvettes as well as some Armed Trawlers. Alongside their prey in the shape of a Robbe U47 U-Boat, recently rebuilt from a fairly scruffy state by one of our newest members, Derek Chapman. At least his sub got wet over the weekend!

Robbies light Fleet Carrier HMS Ocean, the polish destroyer  Blyskawica and a smattering of tankers and destroyers next. The Ocean is 1/72 scale and was the first one out of the mold all those years ago.

Operation Overlord next, this utilizes items from our 50th and 60th anniversary displays of the D-Day landings, some of the landing craft date back to 1994, while the ( functional ) Mullberry Harbour and village date back to 2004. many extras, including the tented fuel dump and many vehicles are more recent, built to a constant scale of 1/16, everything is BIG!

Only half of the outer Mullberry is on display, as it was going on a couple of tables, ran out of them!
The village is equipped with pyro effects, the Mulberry can handle different tidal heights, and the sheer value in 1/16 tanks would boggle the brain %%

Unfortunately, some things, unloved and unattended, have to go somewhere. Such was the fate of Adrians two swamp boats...

Nice view though...

Downstairs we had one of the Manned Battleships on display, HMS Canopus, guess who forgot to take a picture?

We tried something a little different with this display, theming tables and areas. This held the attention of the public as they walked through the site. The signs, nic nacs, memorabilia etc that we collected and produced for this display are now available for future events. So, it took a mountain of effort to produce, but full marks to all members involved in producing a top notch static show......

.......we also staged displays outside on the pond. that is for posting another day, cheers for looking.

maybe the organisers of this event would invite other clubs / traders for the next event ? the setting is good , with plenty of " local " water for displays / racing events
