I have a scott dome that has been super glued onto a deck and I want to remove it (the dome). It has been fixed to the deck with super glue as can be seen in this pic.



It looks to be sat on tiny legs or spigots and is surrounded by railings. I cant take the whole 'wing' on which it sits off the model, neither do I want to cut the deck it sits on as there is some detailing underneath.

Anyone any ideas how I can remove this (and the one of the other side) reasonably cleanly? A new platform support with wedges at the base will sit where the Scott Dome is now and I can tidy up where it was (hopefully) after it has been removed. The deck it sits on is plasticard and brute force cant be used to take it off.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Can you get that from DIY shops, Ken? Do you know if it is plasticard safe?

Try using plasweld styrene glue, brush it around the join, and try and pull the dome off. The solvent softens the plastic to allow it to weld together and then evaporates allowing the plastic to harden.

Its worked for me a number of times.

I had some with a batch of superglue once, but have never used it.  Obviously if get any, you would try it first on a piece of scrap plastic.

I'll see if I've still got it and report back after tests.

superglue debonder is available from  good diy places- screwfix also sell it,

i have used it on abs before and its not caused a problem

Any update Ken? Do you know does it dessolve plasticard?

Sorry but can't help you there.  Mine has evaporated, so I'm unable to test for you.

It came with a small superglue from the pound shop, so it might be worth trying one to see

Acetone will remove superglue, but it may also attack the plasticard, so extreme care would be needed. Try it on some scrap first.

Superglue does not fare well against shearing force.  Try putting it in the freezer to 'brittle it up' and then gently twist the assembly until it comes loose.

Putting any kind of chemical near the platform on a finished model might present all kind of problems.  If it were my job to do I'd consider using a fret saw with the finest blade I could find and very gently cut the supports. Another option might be a blade from a razor saw.

I Know this might sound brutal but when I had to remove all the fittings from the deck of my P15 for refurb.
I used a small Aluminum craft knife with the chisel blade held exactly parallel to the joint and a gentle tap
from a pin hammer and they all came off a treat.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll have to get some super glue remover and see if it attacks a piece of spare plasticard. I dont think SWMBO would be impressed if I put a 70" model in the freezer (if it would fit) to try and take the scott domes off but good suggestion if it was a small item.

I think the best suggestion could be the fret saw and gentle fettling.

The tiny legs look easy enough to cut through gently.  When the top part is removed, they can be dealt with gently.
