I have noticed that Model Boat Magazine is now available as a digital issue and that they have a specimen copy free on their web site. You click the link "Sample Model Boats Magazine (Digital)" to get it:

http://www.modelboats.co.uk/extra/

The problem is that it doesn't work for me. At the size it comes onto my screen I can't read it & if I left click on a page to magnify it then it becomes awkward. I haven't read the issue that they are using as the sample but I got through it in 5 minutes whereas I would have sat with a coffee for a couple of hours with a printed edition. I just clicked past pages that I would have looked at in print.

Does it work for you?

Is this the digital archive section you are on about ? If so, it has been on their web site for quite a while and I have used it several times and have found it really useful.

I just wish they would go back further. :-))

Although we're used to looking at stuff on line I do enjoy buying, owning and being able to read it anywhere then pick up and flick through in an instant.
The digital has some advantages, it was quite nice to enlarge some of the illustrations and see a bit more detail but on the other hand when the text refers to an illustration it's a pain to have to pull out again to look at it then pick up the reading place again which isn't where you left it!! It will also be great for those who benefit from larger print.

I personally would prefer to be able to read and view the whole page at the same time which isn't really possible as it is now.

Eventually this is how it will be I guess, hopefully the ipad or equivalent will be cheaper and larger, I don't want to sit at a computer for ALL my life, it's bad enough as it is (except Mayhem of course  :-)) )

The archive is part of it. They will sell you a digital subscription where you only ever get a digital copy of the magazine.

I was disappointed when I tried the sample issue. A subscription at half the price plus all the back issues sounds like a real bargain but, as I said above, it doesn't yet quite work for me.

Works for me, living in Austria, but it isn't the same as settling down with a paper copy. As previously said with a magazine in the hand you tend to read every page. On a screen you scan it. But for a tenner, and with all the back issues, its well worth it. My only criticism, (you can't have everything), is that you don't get the free plans.

How far back do the back issues go?

I don't like much, I still want my copy in my hand. Also the print is very small(it is in the mag too) We are getting older & it is harder to read, I can't figure out why they print so small knowing that lots of us can't read it. Mick B.

Yes, the print in the magazine is on the small side but this enables a lot more content to be included compared with the competition so you get more for your money, especially as there are more pages too!  The high contrast does help legibility. Everyone's eyes are different but this can usually be corrected by an appropriate prescription for spectacles or reading glasses.

Computer screens can usually be easily adjusted to increase the text size if necessary.

Back issues go back to January 2007. You can zoom in to the pages to make them readable.

Are you able to download and print, from the digital version. {:-{ {:-{

For example with the hard copy you can print out copies of articles/photos without having to destroy the magazine.

You can print off any page from the digital issue. Regarding the price, in December last year I paid £9.99 for a years subscription, nothing to do with being abroad, and having checked I see it is now £19.99. How can they justify that sort of increase!!

They don't have to justify it.

My guess is that they are trying the pricing to see what they can get.

Are you able to print of a photo or must it be the full page.

I think you can only print the whole page.

I don't know but you might be able to print to a file & then crop the image.

In the sample edition I cannot download it at all but only view it online. If the picture blows up over the screen size I cannot even view the whole picture at once. I hope that this changes if you pay.

That was just a short term promotion. MMI are quoting £27.99 for their digital issue sub which has a lot less content than MB so be thankful!
