Football Free Zone
« on: June 11, 2012, 05:46:50 PM »

I have heard of old sailors walking inland with an anchor
and settling in the first place that someone asks
Whats that?
Is there anywhere I can do that carrying a football?

"When two tribes go to war, a point is all that you can score" (certainly in England's case {-)).
Football doesn't look much like a game any more. It seems just to be an excuse to get blind drunk and then shout insults at a group of foreigners in the middle of a grass field on the basis that they're not your foreigners while some overpaid moron shouts himself hoarse over the TV during the proceedings and a bunch of decrepits then try to turn what they've just watched into a science.
I'd sooner thumb through a book of carpet samples.

I have played both football and rugby and while enjoying rugby (if you can at full back!!) I always found football the more skillful sport.
Yes the players are overpaid, but for me the modern rules for rugby took a lot away from it.
I just don't get the either rugby or football, I can appreciate both (and cricket) and for me football will always be the far more exciting skillful game.

In saying that I will always support England even in tiddlywinks.

What spoils football for me are all the idiots that dive on the floor rolling around as though they have
just been shot,( at the slightest physical contact).
Then after wasting everyone's time jump to their feet and and continue in the game.
How some of them act they should be awarded a li-low for the time they spend lying down.
They really,really, really aggravate me.

Wonder if it's true that when the England team got off the plane and began to enter the airport, that the pilot offered to wait outside for them ? %%

I'm not into football but I do like watching it with friends that get so emotionally involved with a team. It's like having a roller-coaster in the living room!

Actually I did see a bit of the first match Greece v Poland. I think it was the Polish goalkeeper was sent of for foul or handball or something. A player had to go off and substitute goalie came on and he saved a penally with his first touch of the ball! What a Hero!

I assume most in this thread didn't watch the Poland/Russia game then.
You missed a sporting spectacle.
On paper Russia should have just brushed Poland aside and won easily.
As you might realise there are a lot of political tensions past and present between these countries.
The Polish determination was evident during the singing of the National Anthem.
Poland played with passion and determination, not the most attractive game of football but certainly passionate.
Poland went one goal down just before half time.
They came out in the second half with even more determination.
Then the Poles equalised, the stadium erupted, chants of POLSKI, POLSKI reverberated around the stadium.
They played well and deserved to win, but the final result was 1-1.
That to me is what football is about, passion and pride.
I was just so glad I watched the game.

I watched Australia play Japan in a World Cup qualifying match last night and it was an enthralling match - apart from the referee who seemed to have no idea what he was supposed to be doing :o At least he was not biased, he was equally hopeless towards both teams {-). However, his dismal performance didn't detract from what was a great game of football which finished 1-1, after Australia was awarded an extremely dubious penalty late in the game. Maybe the ref was trying to make up for a glaringly obvious penalty shout by the Aussies earlier on, which he bewilderingly turned down. He also sent off a player from each team, in separate incidents, and all the experts are still trying to work out what they did to deserve their red cards. Even the ref's awful showing did not detract from a wonderful game, played in great spirit by two closely matched teams.

The Aussies have had a hard week, having to play in 42 degree heat in Oman, then 4 days later and after a long flight home, facing up to Asian Champions, Japan.

I love football O0
