I deeply sympathize with your problems Rich.

The nuts to which you refer are called Nyloc nuts and require you cut a new thread into them as you tighten them down.  Some are tighter than others and can actually 'shear' the cross head screwdriver tips.  They hurt my fingers my fingers as well, so you are not alone.

They are very good at not coming apart, for this reason.  May I suggest you do not use them but instead go for ordinary 2mm nuts.  (cheap to buy).  I think you'll find this easier and they will do the job just as well if you apply a little  ' locktight'  to the thread.

It's funny that should mention the subject of these wishbone springs as I am fitting these myself at this very moment for the third time.  I am scratch building again and keep getting the measurements wrong.  %)   Mind  you, the threads on my Nyloc nuts are almost spinners by now.

All the best

Ken

I've just managed to assemble the diff unit and best part of the rear suspension, after much bad language when the diff refused to turn the axles.  I haven't a clue why, but after dismantling the whole lot twice, at the third attempt it worked, and that's the main thing.

Ken, it is those cursed nyloc nuts that gave me grief..I can tighten them so far, but not enough to be secured properly. And guess what...yep, I can't undo them now. I'm now stuck with the nuts on both sides that will neither tighten or loosen, and I don't want to destroy the screw heads completely. I'm hoping that Ian (as in IanPal) reads this, as he lives only five minutes drive from me, maybe I can bribe him to nip round and sort things out for me one way or the other. (Kettle's on, Ian...)

I have some 2mm ordinary nuts standing by, just in case Ian can get them off for me. (Kettle's boiling, Ian...)

{-) yep I have just read this.... and the pm you sent.

First thing you asked for some expert help in the pm, well let me assure you I'm no expert.

I'm a bit busy this evening but If you want I can  pop down tomorrow evening around 7ish and have a look/bash at it for you, I'm free all evening. If you have got the nyloc's started ad dot intend taking it apart again it might be worth just tightening them up, as once you use loc thread that can be just as awkward to undo again, trust me been there got the t shirt.  {:-{

Anyway   if tomorrow evening is good pm me your address and I'll see you around 7?

Ian, you're a star mate...bring a decent cross head screwdriver with you, as I think mine may be the cause of the problem.

7 tomorrow evening will be fine by me, look forward to meeting you. (address is via pm).

Cheers Ian,

Maby you no this so I apologise for butting in ref cross head driver might be at fault .If you use a Phillips driver on a Posidrive screwhead it will mule it up or the other way round .Phillipscross heads are just that cross heads but a Posidrive cross head has small marks between the cross and the driver has little bits in between the cross and the angle is different . Again I apologise if It's a case of sucking eggs and all that .

Just wanted to say a public 'Thank You' to Ian for tonight...we dismantled best part of the truck and rebuilt it exactly the same as it was!

You're a real star, Ian...thanks ever so much for your help tonight, much appreciated.

Picture as requested, Ken...just a bare chassis, but it's getting there, slowly but surely.

The dreaded gearbox is next on the agenda...

I'll bet your neighbours will hear some hitherto unheard of swear words when you start building that!

Half way through the gearbox...apart from one minor hiccup with a modified shaft that I couldn't find, all is going well so far. Couple of swear words over them perishing E clips, but apart that...all is good.

Rich, no problem, I enjoyed last night, had a good old natter and you make good coffee  {-)

Right I just had a look at mine and the rear spring set up is completely different to yours being a 6x4. (no wonder I couldn't get my head around it) But there is no side to side movement at the springs, well not as much as there is on yours. Perhaps ken knows if there should be so much play at the springs?
Did you get that diff tight spot sorted?
Good to hear you have nearly sorted the gearbox out, once you've done that the rest is easy, But do have a look at that steering set up, you can loose most of that play by ditching Tamiya's set up and moving the servo for a direct linkage.

It was good, wasn't it? Like a couple of old women nattering away!

I'll take a photo of those spring hangars and post it up here, see if Ken has any ideas on it. I'll have a look at shifting that steering servo too, that seems a good idea.

The tight spot in the diff is hardly noticeable now for some reason, I've been giving it several turns every now and again, and although it is still there, it's nowhere near as bad as it was. Most strange...

Cheers Ian,

Well done so far.  Glad you're enjoying the build.

With reference to your wishbone type springs, I have the same situation on my Volvo truck   It would appear to be the fault of the special screws that go through the bent spring ends.  The bush on them is too long and allows for a lot of sideways movement.

I filled the gap with extra washers with a larger hole to allow them to fit on the bush part of the screws.  This stops the side to side movement of the wishbone.  The rear doesn't really matter much as it allows a little turning action when cornering but,  it's vital there should be No side movement on the steering action of the front wheels.  You are going to have a lot slop in the steering mechanism anyway due to the linkage system employed by Tamiya.  This is why we modify the design  (maybe for you at a later stage !) to remove some of the linkages.

Chin up. Your nearly there once you've done the gearbox.. Don't forget the grease on all the gears.   ;)

Cheers

That would explain it Ken, I/we knew there shouldn't be that amount of sideways movement. we read and re-read the book, took it all apart and put it back together, then I came home and looked at my Scania and still couldn't get my head around it.

Thanks Ken, I'll fit some washers to take up that slackness in the rear spring hangers...we were right, Ian!

No, not tried the tyres on the wheels yet...I can hear Ian shaking with fear as I open the Vaseline pot..  ;)

Ian did explain about the modification to the steering, maybe something to think about later.

The gearbox is proving...interesting, to say the least. Those blasted little tiny E clips nearly drove me mad, you wouldn't think they could ping so far    >>:-(

Cheers guys,

when working with E clips its good practice to try working within a freezer bag (just the hands)

A quick update just in case the forum goes down again...

This morning I managed to sort out the play in the axle mounts, a couple of extra washers here and there made all the difference. Thanks for the tip, Ken.   :-))

I'm now attempting the dreaded assembly of the gearbox...I've lost one E clip (it went down the back of the bench straight into the jaws of the always hungry carpet monster), broken one (it just snapped in half) and I'm now trying to decipher what gear goes where in the g'box.   <:(

(Are you sure I can't go direct drive...)  >>:-(

Morning Ian...

Swearing? Swearing he asks? The air wasn't blue, it was jet black! And it was all my own doing, I'd got one bearing in the wrong position, I must have stripped that gearbox down a dozen times before I discovered the problem. I reckon I could assemble it blindfolded now...
