Has anybody any experience of r/c-ing the Revell 1:24 Neoplan coach?

I have been promised one by Santa and I would love to give it a go.  It is crying out for r/c.  I found one Youtube film, but I wasnt impressed by the turning circle (non existent!!!).

If anyone can point me in the direction of some info on this I would be most grateful  :-))

Cheers
Carl

Hiya Carl.

I bought the Revell double decker bus to enable me to scale up to 1:14.

Please see the result on this reference.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,38582.msg487438.html#msg487438

The Revell was partially built and I agree with you about the turning circle.  This is due to the wheels fitting inside the base chassis not having enough room.  You may be able to tinker with it, if you want to go the R/C route.  You've chosen a nice looking coach.  Whetted my apatite again.  As if I'm not busy enough.    :}

Cheers

That Revell double decker also looks very inviting!!! There are precious few coaches and buses as kits - especially in a large scale.

How would I go about r/c-ing this Neaoplan? I am sure a suitable motor can be fitted in the rear engine bay in place of the plastic model version, with a shaft taken to a diff on the rear axle.......but where would I find a suitable diff? Or motor?

Without the kit to hand I cannot be sure, but the front steering should be realtively simple to convert with a servo mounted beneath the passenger space floor.  Perhaps I can make one of the side luggage lockers openable for access to mount a battery....

Ken - any advice on converting to r/c by someone like yourself who is knowledgable in these matters (I have never converted a wheeled vehicle to r/c) would be most welcome!!!!

Looking forward to getting this kit.........imagine what it could look like with all the lights working!!! (LED's)

Take a look at the diffs etc from the smaller hobby grade RC cars.
I think I have something that might work..... you would probably want to down gear it a bit tho.

I'll take a look at the weekend for you :)
in the meantime could you post a few measurements of the wheelbase, width etc

Personally I would not R/C this size of vehicle.  The list  'stuff'  you would need is quite considerable and if the front axles are the same as my plastic version then there is no way you can link the front steering, let alone running a rear drive shaft without major replacing of all the running gear.

The wheel joints are very flimsy and movement is plastic on plastic bearings. The model provided would only be suitable for display.  I used mine to scale up to 1:14 and then had to buy a Tamiya truck for the relevant parts. I estimate the total build costs at around 500 big ones.    %)

Here's the build blog on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzXaKEr4Xn0&list=UUG5Luksc1sDz6ZJ_mnhMcyw&index=2

It's only a 10 minute film taken during the 200 hour build time but it might give you an idea of the challenge.  As I mentioned before, i do like the one you've shown and may have a go at doing the same thing with another Tamiya chassis, myself.

You will catch a glimpse now and again of the Revell product during construction.  I assembled it a bit at a time and measured things for enlarging purposes.

Hope I haven't put a downer on your project so, would hope you get this one and build it up with some pictures for us all to see.

Cheers

Cheers Ken - appreciate your honesty  :-))

I have taken the liberty of joining your forum (just now  ok2 ) so will introduce myself there in a minute.

I might yet have a go at, at least, motorising it - lets face it, if I can r/c the Revell Meteor plastic ship kit I should be able to do something with this.......even if it is only to potter around the kitchen with!!!!!

Would be a "xxxxx" to enlarge and build from scratch  :o  - think of all those compound curves!!!!!

Maybe this would be one to experiment with bunging in a 3D computer program and printing it out???

Now THERE'S a thought..................

Hi Carl,  seen you on the truckers site and welcome.

You really have got my interest in this bus now  %%    I have found a build blog on YouTube and it looks like a 6 months job just to do the kit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srXKHStIkb0

Well manufactured kit and they are around £63 at the moment.

cheers

i think the double decker coach would look much better modelled a set of tamiya 1/14th scale wheels and axles , plus of course you can also have the 3 speed gearbox and propshaft and even use a truck chassis to mount everything on . also much more space to make everything work properly

I have been beavering away and here's the latest picture of my Fire Engine build.  As mentioned earlier, it is based on the Tamiya Scania chassis and the top section is scratch built.

It has a lighting system and 3 speed gearbox and is totally remote controlled. The cabin is actually two cabins cut and joined together. The ladders are made from Aluminium and the stripes are printed on plastic transfers.

My Fire Engine is almost complete now so I have been looking the Revell  "Cityliner" to use as a blueprint for the next build in 1:14 scale for Tamiya frames.

Unfortunately they have been discontinued so I am in desperate need of one.  There are a few being offered on  'sites'  but the prices have gone through the roof.  Does anyone have a kit  (in any state of repair or build)  that I can salvage please.  Condition is immaterial as long as all the parts are there.

Now working on the  'flashing lights'.

This is proving a nightmare so I've side tracked to a scale 1:14 range rover.  (Bosses car).  This is a commercial model at the correct scale.  It comes with a remote control which is suitable for the bin.  You wouldn't believe the system.  It's on 27 megs and consists of one button to go forward and one button to go in reverse.  Another set to turn left and right, instantaneously, i might add.  Total costs, on sale at 15  pounds.

The plan is to fit a proper control system and some flashing blue lights.

Component Shop do blue leds with flasher
built in to the capsule.
Only needs a switcher to control them
on/off and they sell them also.

You can get some really good flashing lights for models now, I have a set I bought for a Police boat that plug into a spare channel on the receiver and they work a treat, no need for a switch. Loads on ebay if you search for "police lights" in the radio control section. What issue do you have with your flashing lights?

Thank you Ned & rsm,

I do have the leds and flasher units and sequencer units.  They look fantastic laid out on the bench and  'bleeping' away.  The problem I have is that I should have designed for them when i was building the rear frame.  The  Fire Engine has  'up and over'  doors which encroach on the sides and tops of the rear section.  As this section is now all sealed up  (with no thought to this future problem) I may have to remove one end to be able 'poke' the wires through.

As it's all painted up, I am a little concerned that damage may ensue.  Who was it that said  " I think I'll have to think it out again".   Fagin ?

We'll get there in the end, I suppose.    %)

Cheers

Thanks for pointing that out, young Derek.  It makes me feel even more pleased.

I forgot to mention that the interior is completely furbished, just like the real car.  Unfortunately this restricts the addition of proper servos and speed controller so we are searching the market to see what's out there.

cheers

It's not quite ready but further work has been done on the engine.

I have rebuilt the control system inside and wired up the bank of rear lights.  I have a sound recording of engine noises, all built into a miniature amp and speaker which sits in the cab. The rear lights involved tearing the back off and starting again as there was no other way of running the wires through the up and over doors.  (no plans to work from).   %)

The rear panel is now fitted but no pictures at the moment.  I  'sort of'   switched off and changed models.   :}
